Welcome to the 29th Annual Kitchen Kapers Home Tour, the philanthropic endeavor of 53 dedicated volunteers and their partner, the OhioHealth Foundation. Since our inception in 1987, Kitchen Kapers has been committed to raising funds to support cancer care at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital. To date, we have raised nearly $800,000 including our 2015 proceeds at just over $81,000. With continued success, Kitchen Kapers proceeds will reach even further to support more OhioHealth programs that are important to our community.

We are currently privileged to support the Artist in Residence program at the OhioHealth Arthur G. H. Bing, MD, Cancer Center. Recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts, this holistic program brings music, poetry and art to the bedside of cancer patients to enhance healing and improve quality of life. Creative outlets—including music and art—help patients and their families cope with the emotional and physical burdens of cancer. Please enjoy the soothing music of guitarist John Morgan and the colorful art pieces by art therapist Jen McHale as you’re walking through the homes today. Their holistic approach to cancer treatment exemplifies the “Believe in We” mentality of OhioHealth.

We are thankful for the individuals and businesses with whom we have partnered this year to make this tour possible. We wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to our homeowners who have generously and graciously opened their homes to us today. We express sincere gratitude to our Tour Sponsor, Riverside Radiology and Interventional Associates, Inc., and each of our Home Sponsors. Thank you to our media sponsor, NBC4, and our honorary spokesperson, Ellie Merritt, for continuing to support our cause. We extend thanks to all of our wonderful restaurant and floral partners, our advertising sponsors and our generous individual donors.

I am amazed and forever grateful for the hardworking efforts of our membership who have given endless hours and talents to ensure our success. Thank you for being so kind and for making our community such a wonderful place to live.

Finally, if today is your 29th time attending or your very first Kitchen Kapers Tour, we thank you for your support. We hope you enjoy the Tour! Please leave knowing that YOU have made a difference in the lives of those living with cancer.

Warm Regards,

Ashley Dudley2016 Kitchen Kapers President

P.S. We look forward to seeing you next year for our celebratory 30th annual Kitchen Kapers Tour!

Celebrating 29 Years!

OHIOHEALTH RIVERSIDE METHODIST HOSPITAL Cancer Care: Arts in Medicine Program Brings Comfort to Patients and Families

Where do the arts fit into healthcare? Right at the bedside! Living with cancer can create unbearable stress and anxiety. It can come from constant worry about the condition of cancer or fearful waiting before a procedure or surgery.

The Arts in Medicine program at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist is designed to help patients and their families cope during these times by providing cancer resources and a means to help them relax through creative activities, as well as express and explore their emotions and concerns.

Research studies on arts in medicine programs have proven artistic activities can lower stress levels, decrease anxiety and improve a sense of well-being. Riverside Methodist’s Arts in Medicine program includes, but is not limited to, visual, literary and musical arts that can help the patient shift focus into a more peaceful and hopeful mental space.

Solely funded by philanthropic support and the only program in central Ohio recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts as a “Best Practice,” the Arts in Medicine program is founded on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people in many significant ways.

About the OhioHealth FoundationThe OhioHealth Foundation helps our central Ohio family of faith-based, not-for-profit, volunteer-governed hospitals and healthcare services fulfill their commitment to extraordinary care.

Gifts made to the OhioHealth Foundation benefit Riverside Methodist Hospital, Grant Medical Center, Doctors Hospital, Dublin Methodist Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital, Hospice, Mansfield Hospital, Shelby Hospital and O’Bleness Hospital.

For more information, visit the Foundation at OhioHealth.com/Foundation or (614) 544-GIVE (4483).

Dear Volunteers and Touring Friends,For 29 years, the members of Kitchen Kapers have raised almost $800,000 to support cancer care at the OhioHealth Arthur G. H. Bing, MD, Cancer Center at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital. The group continues its mission “to improve the lives of those living with cancer” with today’s tour of renovated and remodeled kitchens in Upper Arlington.

Kitchen Kapers is a group of dedicated and hardworking volunteers who affect great change in the lives of patients through fundraising efforts. Proceeds from the annual tour provide philanthropic support to the Artist in Residence Program, a holistic program aimed at bringing art to cancer patients. For many patients, the creative outlets provided by this program provide a welcome break from the day-to-day challenges of life with cancer. Specially trained professional artists work with patients at their bedside and in group settings to involve them in the arts, including music, poetry, writing, painting and more.

Last year, Kitchen Kapers welcomed more than 850 tour guests and raised over $80,000 to benefit cancer care. Your participation and support today will continue to sustain these important endeavors which promise a welcoming, uplifting and comforting environment for patients, caregivers and their families.

We are so happy that you have come out today to join us on our tour. We hope you enjoy Jen McHale’s artistry and John Morgan’s soothing music as you make your way through the beautiful homes, knowing that your presence today is helping cancer patients for years to come.

With appreciation and thanks,

Dr. Andrew Grainger Medical Director of Cancer Services OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital

Huddleston Home 1753 BEDFORD ROAD

Welcome to 1753 Bedford Road, the home of James and Melissa Huddleston and their three children. This home was built in 1928 and is unique because it was fitted with gas and electrical lines by the original owners, the Kerr Family. The gorgeous plaster ceilings are also original to the home and have been beautifully brought back to life by the general contractor of this project, The Bellepoint Company. The now urban-industrial design of the space is enhanced by many of the unique features of the original home that have been kept intact. It was important to the homeowners to restore as much as possible while incorporating design influences of the 1920s in their new spaces.

Entering through the elegantly designed foyer, you will see the family room, with its original fireplace, to the left of the foyer, along with the office and dining room. To the right, you will see the inviting lounge, which takes you back to the kitchen. Once inside the kitchen, you will enjoy the open eat-in table set aside a wall of windows that allows natural light to brighten the space. The kitchen was an addition

by a previous homeowner. However, the Huddleston’s vision for the space necessitated a complete renovation upon their purchase of the home in the summer of 2015.

The Bellepoint Company is responsible for the design, carpentry and sub-contracting for this space. The perimeter cabinets are painted Benjamin Moore American White while the island cabinets

17

Page 10: 2016 HOME TOUR - Kitchen Kapers Kapers 2016 Home Tour.pdf · Tzagournis Family & Cosmetic Dentistry Upper Arlington, LLC Vernacular Wade Orthodontics TICKET PARTNERS Chocolate Café

are painted Lampblack. The counter surface is quartzite in White Macaubus. Ceramic subway tile lines the posterior portion of the kitchen wall. The floors, by Schlabach Wood Design, are oak and were designed to look industrial and complement some of the original hardwoods lining other areas of the first floor. The walls are painted in Sherwin Williams Repose Grey. The appliances are Thermador.

The Huddlestons enjoy hosting happy hour for their friends and welcoming

other children into the home, which makes the adjoining bar space in the family room a perfect spot for their daily living. In all, the family is settling in nicely to their newly renovated home that so perfectly fits their lifestyle.

We would like to thank The Bellepoint Company and Columbus Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery, Inc. for sponsoring this tour home and for all of their support in our efforts to enhance the fight against cancer.

Heublein Home 2553 CHARTWELL ROAD

Welcome to 2553 Chartwell Road, home of Patrick and Katie Heublein and their three boys. The home was originally built in 1968 and purchased by the Heubleins in 2014. Katie, who grew up in Upper Arlington just a few blocks away, wanted to return to the area with Patrick to raise their family. Katie is a commercial interior architect, and she saw the potential in this home, which sits on three-quarter acres. The Heubleins began a complete renovation and extensive addition right away. All that remains of the original house are the brick exterior walls and one interior structural wall. The old house was a 2,500-square-foot, two-story red brick home with a two-story pillared front porch. The renovation took one year to complete and resulted in a beautiful white brick house with more than 4,000 square feet of space. The black windows and country-style porches help subtly incorporate the addition and the three-car garage to the rear. The homeowners describe the overall look of the house as “industrial farmhouse” with natural materials and accessories to balance the industrial elements.

Katie and Patrick collaborated with their architect to bring their vision of a functional, stylish and open floor plan to this family-friendly home. Because of her architectural experience, Katie was able to speak the design language and provide input for most aspects of the home. As you walk into the foyer, you will notice the newly installed reclaimed wood floors, including an inlaid herringbone design. The white oak is covered with a new product, a Rubio Monocoat 5% White with Smoke finish, to give it a matte look. To the right is the hearth room and pub where Patrick and Katie spend much of their leisure time and where they entertain guests. The pub has a chair-height bar and back wall made of reclaimed Chicago street-paving bricks from the 1800s. For Patrick, a Chicago native, this touch makes him feel more

connected to his hometown. A metal and glass wall with full-height doors separate the pub room from the hearth room.

The addition of the kitchen allowed the Heubleins to incorporate a vaulted ceiling made with painted white shiplap and a reclaimed wood beam. It was also important to them that they maintain an open flow between the kitchen, patio and pub, which they achieved with French doors. Because the Heubleins’ preferred cooking method is grilling, they made sure that there was easy access to the spacious backyard where the grill and fireplace are located.

The stunning kitchen features two islands, one an oversized five-by-twelve-foot island with a farmhouse sink for cooking, and a second, chair-height

island for eating, homework and art projects. With their three young boys, Patrick and Katie felt that a separate island for casual eating, crafts and homework was a necessity. Both islands are painted black and topped with Carrera marble while the surrounding counters are topped with honed Absolute Black granite. The surrounding cabinets are painted white to go with the black-white-and-neutral color scheme of the house. The backsplash is composed of honed Bianco Venetino subway tile with a beautiful Walker Zangler 6th Avenue Accent French clay mosaic above the range from The Hamilton Parker Company. Two glass-front cabinets with a window in the back flank the range and allow for even more natural light to filter through from the backyard. They also provide a nice space to display colorful accent pieces. Two oversized black pendant chandeliers accent the main kitchen island along with one over the

“kids’” island. All appliances are Jenn-Air stainless steel.

The rebuild also includes a mudroom with lockers made from barn siding. On the front of each locker, there is a chalkboard that the children can personalize daily. The mudroom is attached to the kitchen by a spacious walk-in pantry with sliding barn door. The back stairs lead to the second floor laundry and playroom. Down a 30-foot hallway is the master suite, which features a vaulted ceiling. The master bath is equipped with a large steam shower and a standalone tub with a vanity counter on either side. The excavated basement includes a theater room with recliner seating, a half bath and a game room.

Thank you for taking the time to visit this thoroughly modern rebuild. Please take time to thank Tailored Management for sponsoring this gorgeous family-friendly, contemporary home.

Trotter Home 1585 DOONE ROAD

Welcome to 1585 Doone Road, the home of Shannon and Benjamin Trotter. Originally built in 1949, the home was in nearly original condition when the Trotters, only the third owners, purchased it in 2012. The Trotters hired a team of professionals and embarked on a fourteen-month extensive addition/renovation that included reconfiguring and opening up the first floor space, turning an existing screen porch into a home office, adding a new first floor master suite, expanding and renovating the kitchen and adding a new mudroom and powder room.

The kitchen was designed with the original Cape Cod style of the home in mind. Simple Shaker cabinets, paneled appliances, white subway tile, honed Calcutta gold marble countertops, a white farmhouse sink and shiplap on the walls create a timeless look and reference the homeowners’ small-town roots. The bright white of the cabinets, neutral walls and large windows create an airy and fluid feel and allow interplay between inside and outside.

The back porch and breakfast nook were two important features that originally drew the Trotters to purchase the home. Retaining them was a must even though it made space planning a challenge. To maximize space, a Thermador column refrigerator was installed in the main kitchen and a separate column freezer was moved to the mudroom. A Wolf steam oven was installed in the island and the GE

Space Saver microwave was moved to the mudroom. The homeowners are self-professed coffee snobs, and the mudroom is therefore home to a coffee station with Instahot dispenser. The owners regularly entertain groups of 10-40 guests, and the mudroom serves as a bridge to the outside, keeping muddy shoes and paws off the wood floors while providing additional kitchen service space and a bar sink that doubles as a cooler during parties.

To carry the Cape Cod cottage feel throughout the rest of the home, shiplap, beams, and a floor-to-ceiling bookcase was added in the living room. A closet was removed from the foyer to create a more open entryway, and the walls that originally enclosed the stairs to the second floor were removed to create a connection between the front and rear spaces of the home. The unique newell posts were copied from

the originals still present on the second floor. The buffet and corner cabinet in the dining area were designed as built-ins to honor the home’s past, maximize space for a dining table and provide display space for Shannon’s collection of antique cake stands.

The newly designed and installed landscaping adds the finishing touches to a very special property.

Thank you for visiting this casually elegant home that gives the term “cottage” a different meaning with its surprisingly bright, airy and open spaces. While touring the home, please thank the home sponsor K.A Menendian Rug Gallery for its generous support.

Prasad/Nawrocki Home 2612 DORSET ROAD

Welcome to 2612 Dorset Road, home of Mona Prasad and Matt Nawrocki. This 1951 home was purchased in 2008 and renovated in 2015. The homeowners wanted to bring more light into the home, which had been remodeled just prior to their purchase. Using the Michigan coastline as their inspiration, they brought light and comfort into an area that had been previously decorated in earth tones and dark wood.

John Edmonds of Windsor Construction brought their vision to life without making structural changes to the footprint of the home. The previously narrow galley kitchen was opened up and anchored by the impressive kitchen island topped in leathered Uba Tuba granite. In contrast, the cabinetry has a matte white finish with glass inlay from the Windsor Cabinet Company. The cabinets are finished with custom black walnut drawers and brushed brass hardware. The backsplash tile, Ying Yang, by The Hamilton Parker Company, also provides a soft reflection of light along with the commercial-grade stainless steel KitchenAid appliances. The kitchen connects to the formal dining room through a butler’s pantry and wet bar. This area is a convenient location to store small appliances within reach without cluttering the countertops.

Above the kitchen and living room is an impressive hand-crafted, wood-beam ceiling. The hand-hewn beams are finished in white to achieve the brightness the homeowners requested. Across from the island is a beautiful hand-crafted wood fireplace mantle. The detail in the woodwork creates a visually stunning centerpiece to the living area.

A designer worked with the homeowners to create a soft neutral palette that brings casual elegance to the breakfast nook and living room. The muted gray, white and blue color scheme blends the coastal feeling throughout the space. The furniture is both functional and comfortable. The copper coffee table was previously the dining table in the breakfast area. This busy family of four added both

functionality and whimsy with a large calendar by Sticks from a local gallery that anchors the far wall of the kitchen.

The kitchen and living area open up to a large patio and beautiful outdoor space. Matt and Mona enjoy casual entertaining in their lovely new space that has truly become the heart of their home.

Please join us in thanking CoverMyMeds and Windsor Cabinet Company for their sponsorship of this home and for their overall support to our worthwhile cause.

Lilly Home 2030 TREMONT ROAD

Welcome to 2030 Tremont Road, home of Joel and Stacy Lilly and their two girls. Their home is one of the original twenty-five homes in Upper Arlington. Joel and Stacy purchased the home in 2012. After living in it for two-and-a-half years, they decided to begin a home renovation. The inspiration for the project is very personal and comes from memories of a family trip they took to Italy after losing a dear friend there a few years earlier. With the help of a designer, architect and the general contractor Derrick Layer Custom Homes & Remodeling LLC, their vision came to life.

Stacy has long been a fan of MacKenzie-Childs, which makes ceramics and home furnishings notable for their checkerboard designs. It was even the inspiration for her bedroom when she was a teenager. So when she first entered the house and saw the black and white flooring, she knew this was the home for her.

The Lillys love to entertain, frequently having friends over for patio nights, holiday parties or just to gather with friends. The bar area is an integral part of their home entertaining, immediately welcoming guests to the home as they enter from the front door and drawing guests into the stunning kitchen just beyond.

The kitchen is home to many unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that are custom designed by Stacy. When you first enter

the kitchen, you can’t help but notice the large custom pantry painted in Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black. Stacy found the two antique doors at a local store, and her cabinet makers at Schlabach Wood Design were able to incorporate them into a pantry that now houses cookbooks, cereal and spices, among other items. Schlabach Wood Design provided all of the cabinets, which are finished in a custom white. The ceiling (Sherwin Williams Alabaster) and walls (Sherwin Williams Mega Greige) tie the whole room together.

The long kitchen island is Arctic White marble while the perimeter countertops are an oiled black soapstone, all provided by Modlich Stoneworks. Your eye will be drawn to the soapstone overlay on the apron front sink with the word “Abbracci,” meaning “hugs” in Italian, etched into it. The lights hanging above

the island perfectly complement the wrought-iron skeleton keys featured throughout the kitchen. The Hamilton Parker Company supplied the gorgeous floor tile manufactured by Anatolia (color series “Castello”) and backsplash for the Lilly kitchen.

The Wolf side-by-side refrigerator with bottom freezer is provided by Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. The refrigerator doors showcase custom skeleton key pulls designed by Stacy. She also designed the skeleton key pulls

featured on the pantry doors. The Wolf six-burner range, also provided by Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, is set off by a stunning custom oven hood, which Stacy also helped to design.

Thank you for visiting this stunning home. As you walk through and explore all of its many treasures, please take time to thank OhioHealth Breast and Cancer Surgeons, Dr. Larry J.Lilly and Dr. Natalie B. Jones and Modlich Stoneworks for their generous support as home sponsors.

Burden/Nelson Home 2095 TREMONT ROAD

Welcome to 2095 Tremont Road, home of Jim and Amy Burden and their family. The home was built in 1918 on a historic lot in Upper Arlington and is one of the oldest homes in the area. Jim and Amy purchased the home in June 2013 but did not move in until 2014 after completing a yearlong renovation under the architectural design of Thomas Beery Architect, Inc. In addition to renovating most of the existing house, the Burdens added a new kitchen, a second floor bedroom and a finished basement, altogether adding 1200 square feet to the home.

Jim and Amy do a fair amount of entertaining, including family gatherings, holiday parties and team dinners for their three children. With this in mind, they wanted to create an open floor design that would accommodate their friends and family and provide a functional space for everyday living.

As you enter the home, you pass through the formal dining room into the open kitchen and family room. There is a sizeable pantry as you enter the kitchen, concealed by a sliding barn door. The spacious kitchen includes Whip-Cream colored Haas cabinets finished with a smoke highlight, honed brown leather granite countertops and a sleek white granite island.

The Burdens wanted to maintain a modern style and also incorporate certain French influences, which they

accomplished by painting the window grids. The many windows provide natural light in both spaces. Additional lighting for the room includes Arteriors pendants that hang over the bar and the Golden fixture above the kitchen table in the color Gun Metal Bronze.

Other features of the kitchen include the KitchenAid oven and range that have a custom hood. The Kohler sink and Mirabelle faucet are both from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery. And the Boyce & Bean twilight colored subway tile that enhances the background of the kitchen was purchased locally at The Hamilton Parker Company and perfectly pulls together the kitchen motif.

The focal point of both rooms is the massive brick fireplace that was part of the original home. Amy and Jim decided

47

Page 25: 2016 HOME TOUR - Kitchen Kapers Kapers 2016 Home Tour.pdf · Tzagournis Family & Cosmetic Dentistry Upper Arlington, LLC Vernacular Wade Orthodontics TICKET PARTNERS Chocolate Café

to not only extend the brick from the fireplace into the new addition but to also incorporate it in the kitchen with an exposed-brick wall. A collection of art passed down through the family adds character to the rooms and provides the perfect finishing touches to complete the overall space.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to Thomas Beery Architect, Inc. and Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery for sponsoring this beautiful, unique home at the heart of Old Arlington.

Morris/Smith Home 2041 WESTOVER ROAD

Welcome to 2041 Westover Road, home of Ed Morris and Mary Beth Smith and their two teenagers. The home was originally built in 1940 and was purchased by the Morris/Smith family in 2012. In 2013, Ed and Mary Beth decided to hire Dave Fox Design Build Remodelers for a master bath and closet renovation. They had such a great experience that they enlisted this same firm to help with their kitchen remodel.

The homeowners really wanted an open-concept kitchen, so they enlisted the help of their architect and designer. The final design took out dining room and family room walls to create an open and welcoming atmosphere. Ed and Mary Beth wanted to maintain the original style of the house while at the same time updating the look. Dave Fox was able to match features of the original house to the new space, including the archway that you pass through as you enter the kitchen from the living room and front hallway.

Immediately past the dining room is a beautiful island topped with Cambria Quartz in Berwyn from Konkus Marble and Granite. With help from the designer, the homeowners decided they wanted to create a contrasting look by using Chestnut stain on the Dynasty kitchen cabinets. The island features a raised bar

with dark leather bar stools and an arch at the ceiling to help tie in the vintage look of the homes in south Arlington. A notable feature of this kitchen is the owners’ use of Rev-A-Shelf organizers. One unit features two universal knife inserts, stainless steel utensil bins and an adjustable shelf for lower storage while their other unit features easy storage for all of their spices.

Dynasty kitchen cabinets in Pearl run along the perimeter of the kitchen. Two of the cabinets are in seeded glass to showcase their glassware. The homeowners also picked out Absolute Black leathered granite for the countertops along the perimeter from Konkus Marble and Granite. Grey Smoke grout complements the Bright Ice White glossy subway tiles and make the backsplash pop. The cabinet hardware is a polished chrome.

53

Page 28: 2016 HOME TOUR - Kitchen Kapers Kapers 2016 Home Tour.pdf · Tzagournis Family & Cosmetic Dentistry Upper Arlington, LLC Vernacular Wade Orthodontics TICKET PARTNERS Chocolate Café

Off the back of the kitchen is a family room that was added in the 1960s. Ed and Mary Beth wanted it to blend in with the kitchen, so they painted the red brick fireplace in the same white as the kitchen cabinets and trim. Dave Fox Remodeling built the mantle above the fireplace, and The Hamilton Parker Company updated the fire screen. They were able to find and stain new hardwood floors to match the original varied-width hardwood.

The Morris/Smiths set out to create a space where they could entertain friends and family and share their love of cooking.

They used Revere Pewter from Benjamin Moore for the main walls and Sparrow for the arch over the bar and in the powder room. The words above the arch at the raised bar say it best about this family and their beautiful home: “Because Nice Matters” and “Good Friends, Good Food, Good Wine.”

We know you will love touring this warm, inviting open-concept kitchen. Please join us in thanking the home sponsors Columbus Oncology and Hematology Associates, Inc. and Konkus Marble and Granite for their gracious support and contribution.

For the Lilly family, a passion for OhioHealth’s mission — particularly as it applies to the treatment of those with breast cancer — is a family affair.

The family’s patriarch, Larry Lilly, MD, FACS, runs a dedicated breast care and breast surgery practice that he founded in 2005 following a decades-long career in general surgery with OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital. His family, especially wife of 50 years Patty, was instrumental in Dr. Lilly’ s transition to a breast cancer-centered practice. Recalls Dr. Lilly, “When I started the breast practice we were on a shoestring budget, and most of the family had a hand in things, including working behind the scenes in the office.

It was an experience, says Patty, that increased her empathy for those experiencing cancer. Working in the office allowed me to see the overall impact of cancer — not just on the patient, but on family members and children as well.

Support for Dr. Lilly’s practice and breast cancer treatment at OhioHealth is part of the glue that keeps this close-knit family together, including daughters Tanya, Tara and Angela, son Joel, their spouses and grandchildren — so it makes sense that they also join together to raise funds to improve the lives of those living with cancer through the annual Kitchen Kapers event.

Now in its 29th year, Kitchen Kapers is a tour of fine kitchens in Upper Arlington homes. Patty has been involved since the

event’s inception, when she and other members of the Riverside Methodist Service Board were inspired to create a fundraiser that could be both fun and meaningful. The event has raised more than $800,000 for cancer services.

Dr. Lilly and Patty continue their long-time involvement with Kitchen Kapers, and this year’s September 11 tour will feature son Joel’s home. Tanya’s home was on the tour in 2006, and Angela supports the event as well, serving as co-chair of the sustainer relations committee. The family’s dedication to OhioHealth has been passed along to the next generation, as the eldest Lilly grandchild now volunteers at Riverside Methodist.

The family’s charitable commitment is deeply rooted in the love and respect they share for Dr. Lilly’s work. “As I grew up and still today people tell me the impact my father had on them and their families. Hearing these words and watching him through my own eyes definitely made me appreciate having him as a father and mentor,” says Joel.

Angela recalls the pride she felt while working in her father’s office and having patients compliment his work. “I cannot tell you how many times a patient would tell me how wonderful Dr. Lilly is, and I could proudly say, ‘I think so too — he’s my dad!’”

Fundraisers like Kitchen Kapers are critical for providing patients with cancer the services they need to live longer, healthier lives. As more people survive cancer, says

Open letter to “Cancer”: As a breast cancer surgeon, “you” have caused me much sadness and feelings of inadequacy. I remember the lovely young mother who was attacked by “you.” She had the best treatment possible and fought valiantly. She had a great attitude and even ran half marathons through her chemotherapy. We thought she had escaped your clutches, but “you” reared your ugly head again and ravaged her body. While she could not overcome “you” physically, “you” were not able to destroy her will or spirit. There are others like her that made me question our knowledge and abilities to deal with your deceiving nature.

Over time, I have seen many others who have had a similar battle where “you” have been defeated. One example is the young woman in her 20’s that I was called in to see during her surgery. We found “you” had affected multiple organs. As we were operating, I thought to myself that our efforts were likely futile. She went on to have multiple treatments, and I remained anxious. She required an additional surgery to repair the damage “you” had caused, and I was surprised to see that all evidence of your presence in her body was gone. That was many years ago, and now she is the mother of a teenager. She is strong and remains free of your presence. It is miracles like her that give me strength and hope for others.

I am uplifted to know that I am part of a large army of researchers, doctors, nurses and other professionals working tirelessly to eradicate your existence. There is a time when “you” will only be around in history books.

Larry Lilly, MD, FACSBreast Surgeon, OhioHealth Breast and Cancer Surgeons

The Lilly Family’s Multigenerational Passion in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Dr. Lilly, “they still have to deal with the after affects of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and the emotional stress of going through a life threatening experience. Some of the other therapies funded by Kitchen Kapers — such as integrative therapies, massage, exercise and emotional counseling — address what we are not always successful in addressing in the office or operating room. Philanthropic dollars allow more people to afford those services.”

If it’s up to the Lilly family, support for cancer care will continue to grow along

with their family’s care for one another. “The fact that we have all united to support the fight against breast cancer in our own ways has made it a passionate cause for the entire family,” says Tanya. “Not only are we proud of our dad and his passion to help people fighting this disease, but we have pride in each other as well.”

We hope you have enjoyed the 2016 Kitchen Kapers Tour and our featured Artists in Residence! Our hope is you took a moment to enjoy the soothing music of the guitar and interact with the art therapist. Imagine these same artists impacting the lives of patients battling cancer.

Kitchen Kapers’ journey doesn't end today when the tour concludes. The proceeds from the Kitchen Kapers Tour support these artists and enable the Artist in Residence program to operate throughout the upcoming year.

Whether you have been directly impacted by cancer or know someone who has, you can see how the need is great for treating the overall patient along with the disease.

Please consider donating today at www.KitchenKapers.org. It is the greatest compliment we at Kitchen Kapers can receive! Thank you for your support!
