KMCC 2019 NCCC Events Sanctions

Very early this year I was contacted by NCCC Midwest Region club friends whom Gail and I

have come to know through our years of competing and participation in NCCC events asking if

KMCC intended to use our 10 NCCC event sanctions for 2019.

The general history of KMCC sanction use is: We shared some sanctions in the past with WCC

for low speed events but not in the last 2 years. Not finding a suitable site that would work with

available dates WCC has not planned any low speed autocross events needing shared sanc-

tions. KMCC has not used any sanctions in well over a decade for our own events and there was

no indication that would change this year.

Mindful of KMCC sanctions history I was more than happy to offer our unused 2019 NCCC sanc-

tions mostly as our contribution to the Midwest Regional Fundraisers.

The first 4 are part of our Midwest Region fundraiser Memorial Day weekend May 25-27. This will

consist of 21 low speed events over 3 days held at the Rantoul Aviation Center in Rantoul, IL.

We are one of 7 clubs contributing sanctions that will raise funds for regional operations.

The next 4 sanctions are for a 14 event weekend June 15 and 16. This is the one being held at

the Madison College Public Safety Training Facility (Formally 151 Speedway) in Columbus, WI.

Mad City Vettes, Little Egypt CC and Northern Rays, Ltd. CC have worked to put together and

operate this weekend of events along with four of our sanctions to fill the weekend.

The final 2 sanctions were again donated to the Midwest Region for our final low speed events

weekend October 5th and 6th. Suburban Corvette Club of Minnesota is putting together and oper-

ating this 12 event weekend. At this time I have no information on where these events will be

held but according to our sanctioning rules fliers must be out by September 19th. Fliers with com-

plete event information are available on the NCCC Midwest Region competition events site for

the first two listed above.

I hope this answers any questions about KMCC involvement in the 2019 sanctions program and

if not just let me know and I’ll answer the best I can. We as KMCC members are encouraged to

enter and compete or participate as workers at these or any NCCC events.

CHEVROLET DELIVERS 2019 CORVETTE PACE CARS IN

ELKHART LAKE BLUE TO ROAD AMERICA

Chevrolet Pays Tribute to One of America's Greatest Road Courses

According to Chevrolet's designers and engineers, Elkhart Lake Blue is brighter than the outgoing

Admiral Blue. Chevrolet took the suggestions to heart and came up with a brighter blue to pay

homage to the brilliant waters found in nearby Elkhart Lake, the home of the brands most admired

road course, Road America.

According to Chevrolet executives and Corvette aficionados there are not very many brands in

North America that have as strong a tie as Chevrolet's Corvette and Road America.

"If we look at all the racetracks on which we compete and the history that Corvette Racing has

enjoyed at each of them, you could make the claim that none are more important that Road

America," said Doug Fehan, Chevrolet's Program Manager for the Corvette Racing effort. "Elkhart

Lake was the site of the very first Corvette Corral. You have the iconic Corvette Bridge, the Kettle

Moraine, the food the people... all those things and more."

Page 9: KETTLE KAPERS

9

For the better part of 63 years Chevrolet has used the classic 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit in the Kettle

Moraine valley to showcase the Corvette as both a production showcase vehicle and top-line

racecar. That dates back to the 1960s when Chevrolet leadership would traditionally test at and use

Road America to unveil high-performance production models including the original Stingray racer as

well as the 1961 Mako Shark concept. A tradition that dates nearly as far back as the Corvette itself,

as many may not know there was an Elkhart Blue Stingray Corvette in 1967.

The Corvette Grand Sport - a legendary name within the Corvette community - found numerous

successes at Road America with driving stars such as Roger Penske, Jim Hall and Hap Sharp.

The Corvette brand also has been well represented at Road America with the famed Corvette

Bridge, which first appeared in 1963 and then returned in 2011. It served to reaffirm the relationship

between Road America and the Cross Flags.

The Corvette Racing program made its first racing appearance in 2002 as the American Le Mans

Series made its Road America debut. Not surprisingly, a Corvette visited Victory Lane...and has

many times since!

Look for the new Elkhart Lake Blue Chevrolet Corvette Road America pace cars this season and

who knows, you may even get the chance to ride in one.

About Road America: Established in 1955, Road America is located midway between Milwaukee

and Green Bay in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The world's best racers have competed at this legendary

four-mile, 14-turn road circuit for over 60 years. The 640-acre, park-like grounds offer amazing

viewing opportunities, fantastic concessions and high-speed excitement to hundreds of thousands of

spectators each year. In addition to public race weekends, Road America offers a variety of group

event programs, the CTECH Manufacturing Motorplex for karting and super moto, and the Road

America Motorcycle and Advanced Driving Schools. For more information,

FROM THE EDITOR:

By David Modra

Now comes word of another proposed nationwide class-action suit over claims about

defective wheels on 2015-19 Z06s and 2017-19 Grand Sports.

In 2017, Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter said on Corvette Forum that “a

frequent sequence of events is that a wheel gets bent by a road hazard but the damage

is initially almost undetectable to the driver. Maybe the driver notices a little more

vibration, but many times not if the wheel is only slightly out-of-round (just a millimeter or

two). A wheel that is not perfectly round puts stress in the rim that varies with each wheel

rotation. Over time fatigue cracks can form after thousands or even millions of cycles.

The wheel doesn’t look any different but begins to leak air at the rim. Since it is hundreds

or thousands of miles after the damaging event, the driver often can’t remember hitting

anything that would justify a crack in the wheel. I have actually experienced this myself.”

Juechter’s comments in 2017 would seem to

support that argument, though Tadge did end

his response on Corvette Forum by noting: “Our

field data does not suggest a recent significant

increase in the wheel damage rate on our cars.

There may be more reports of damage than

historically reported, but, between the Z06 and

Grand Sport, we are selling lots more wide-

wheel cars than we ever have before. More cars

on the road means more chance of hitting

something in the road.”

Check your wheels and Stay tuned!
