2016 MRP Education Opportunities Survey Results General Summary: We had 144 responses from both online and hard copies with participation from a diverse array of sites. Within Winnipeg, response rates relatively reflected WRHA staff engagement scores. We had great Local Centres participation as well, making up 17% of respondents. Mostly nurses responded. A concern from the data is that there definitely seems to be a lack of flow of information. It seems a lot of staff who participated don’t receive notices of events or the staff e-news. This could mean that they are not being sent the information or that they are not seeing it even if it is posted in their staff areas or sent. There is a strong interest in education events for both one to two day conferences and shorter sessions. Please note that when you separate local centre inputs from the rest, there is less preferences for half-day or shorter educations sessions which is likely based on travel considerations. It could be interpreted that a one or two day session is preferred if attending in person to make it worthwhile if travelling from a local centre. Preference is for Monday to Friday events and also under $100 for a day’s worth of education. Many staff indicated they would rather not have to pay at all. There was strong preference to register and pay online for events. Also staff indicated they wanted emails directly to their personal email accounts as best means for communications. The second preferred option was info posted in staff areas. Less than 13% indicated they frequently use our website. The top five preferred education topics were diabetes, non-compliance (how to improve), vascular access, cardiovascular and labs. eKHR There were concerns about eKHR though most indicated training was meeting their needs. Many staff indicated they don’t receive the eKHR bulletins but we know not all staff are meant to receive it but also know that staff seem to generally not be receiving the emails.

Nurses Nurses are largely not aware of the Nephrology Nursing Toolkit available online through U of M and also not aware of their ability to gain U of M library cards. There was no strong preference either way for where Journal Club takes place (hospital location versus restaurant) though 66% indicated they preferred in-person. When separating local centre inputs, preference is more equal between the two options. The majority overall indicated 1 – 2 times a year was sufficient.

“Other” reasons: scheduling conflicts, couldn’t get time off, short staff, vacation, etc

“Other” reasons: denied education leave, other committment, scheduling conflicts, couldn’t get time off, short staff, vacation, etc.

“Other” reasons: denied education leave, other committment, working, had attended similar session previously, etc

If you answered no to the previous question please explain why.

• currently not using eKHR in our unit • Did not know it was available • eKHR - need email communication of fixes and when they are scheduled to occur • There is too much variation in eKHR standard work. There is a gap in what is taught and

how it is being applied • Never received any initial training • Need more educator assistance in our area. Home Hemo • I have received training but it has not "gone live" in our area yet. • I am new interim manager in the dialysis dept. I would like to encourage my staff here to

attend meetings and belong to a hemodialysis profession organization. I would support education for management and front line dialysis and kidney health staff.

• Computers are old and take forever to get signed in, too many passwords lasting too short a time span, not enough computers to access

• I do not do scheduling • The EKHR is not user friendly and goes down a lot The pharmacy part is too complex

leading to errors Lots of duplicate work No one seems to be in charge of the overall project it IS A DUPLCATE SYSTEM TO THE EPR AND E health It has not proven to be helpful in scheduling pt or knowing if there are avail spots in the system anywhere. A position had to be created to manage this (transition coordinator). Further proof that the scheduling system does not work!

• eKHR is not currently available to Local Renal Health Centre dialysis patients. • The system is not user friendly at all. There is not enough room for the depth of this

topic here. • Still not comfortable with it

NURSES

Any other comments or feedback:

• Is there a possibility of having the Journal club meetings via telehealth for the rural areas? Would definitely make the effort to attend as many as possible via telehealth, long drive home after a 1800 meeting and supper. Also any education sessions that may be offered to HSC/St, Boniface/ Seven oaks via telehealth for the rural centres?

• My first choice would be to attend in-services away from the campus or it would be nice to have education sessions provided via teleconference and/or recorded and archived.

• Please encourage management to allow nurses time off to attend courses or conferences. It seems like they have a few selected people who get to attend.

• Love the Journal club presentations and the team building that goes along with dinner a restaurant together with staff from other centers

• I’m not interested in participating in any journal club, here, work or otherwise. • I do attend many workshops and seminars throughout the year for dialysis related and

my other employment primary care and teen clinic. I am very busy and it is difficult to attend everything that interests me due to having limited time off. If I want to attend a workshop and I am working, I have to find someone to swap shifts with me and this is not really possible since I work at 2 separate facilities.

• Get the managers to let us take time off for conferences and stop allotting time off for their family, friends and favorites

• I rarely open my work email mostly busy at work. I don't access it outside due to security concerns but maybe will start doing so. The emails also seem to have lots of alert mails re staff out of site etc sometimes general notices which I understand is mandatory to be disseminate to general staff nut sometimes it is just too much to filter through. Maybe do an alert notice (as you do for urgent meetings) for educational events relevant to us. So it would pop up the same way. Thanks!
