ABOUT THE BUILDING DESIGNERS’ ASSOCIATION OF QUEENSLAND
BDAQ was formed in 1990 to give recognition to a profession of critical importance to the building
industry. BDAQ represents, promotes, and advances the interests of all practicing building designers
in Queensland. We aim to promote and maintain professional business standards amongst building
designers as well as to provide opportunities to network within this building industry.

STEVE CLARIDGE BDAQ PRESIDENT As president of the Building Designers Association Queensland (BDAQ), it is my pleasure to invite you to the inaugural
National Building Design Conference held at the Gold Coast’s Sea World Resort. Beginning on Friday, 30 September and concluding on Monday, 3 October, this weekend long event will highlight excellence within the industry and offer you the opportunity to improve your skills and knowledge, network and socialise with industry experts.
The BDAQ 2016 National Building Design Conference will also be held in conjunction with the National Building Design Awards. The National Association of Building Designers (NABD) have established this event to give recognition to a profession of critical importance to the building industry.
The theme of this year’s conference “Design in the 21st Century” embodies the true essence of the weekend, spring boarding Australian building design into the present and future. This will be led by a team of international speakers who are travelling to the conference to share their experience and knowledge.
This conference will embody both continuity and innovation, and by attending you will become inspired to better the built environment & helping to create a vision for the culture of building design in Australia.

The 2016 National Building Design Conference will bring together professionals
from across the industries involved in the design of the built environment in
Australia and overseas.
An international line-up of speakers will discuss the changing role of building design
as a result of the way people live, work and play in and around the built
environment. They will discuss the way people interact with the built environment
will change with changing generations and the impact of changing technology on
the way we design and construct buildings.
The conference will attract building designers, builders, architects, building
certifiers and many more from across Australia and overseas. We will meet on
Queensland’s beautiful Gold Coast from 30th of September to the 3rd of October for
an inspiring and exciting mix of work and play.
Two days of serious conferencing will be accompanied by Theme Park access,
amazing breakfast experiences, a study tour and more. A conference for all the
family to enjoy. It may be the only chance for a holiday you will get in 2016!
Registration packages are available that include all the big events or allow you to
choose as little as attending the plenary sessions. It’s your choice how little or how

Gill was the last living victim from the 2005 London bombings and her story which began as she was identified as ‘One Unknown’ to international speaker and founder of M.A.D. for Peace will inspire you.

CONFERENCE SPEAKERS
The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) represents professionals
practising and studying Architectural Technology. It has 16 Regions within the UK and 7
Centres worldwide. Francesca has been Chief Executive at CIAT since 1995 and has worked
in the Architectural Technology and the built environment for over 20 years. Of her
achievements, Francesca led the Institute in gaining its Royal Charter in 2005; and also
recognition as a Competent Authority within the European Union. In addition to this Francesca is: a
Trustee of the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and current Chair of its Publication Committee; a
Council member of both (and former Vice Chairman of both) the Society for the Environment (SocEnv) and
the Construction Industry Council all based within the UK. In 2015 Francesca became a judge for the
Women in Construction and Engineering Awards. Francesca was made an MBE in Her Majesty the Queen
Elizabeth II’s 2012 Birthday Honours for services to the Architectural Technology profession; and in 2014
she received an Honorary Doctorate of Technology from Southampton Solent University.
Kylie Legge is a leading voice in the evolving profession of place making. She is an
architecture graduate, planner, author, facilitator, curator, entrepreneur, and a founding
Director of Place Partners, a multidisciplinary place making consultancy based in Sydney
Australia. Her interests lie in the relationship between people and their urban environments
and how we can work better collaboratively to create the kinds of places people want to
spend time in. Her commitment to understanding the trends and external factors influencing decision
making ensures that projects she works on are fit for the future. Kylie is the author of the Urban Trends
book series, and has published ‘Doing it Differently’ and ‘Future City Solutions’. She is an internationally
regarded speaker having presented at the World Green Building Congress, Venice Architecture Biennale,
UN Habitat’s ‘Future of Places’, Green Cities and for Monocle Magazine to name but a few.
Al Baxter is a Wallaby with a unique blend of integrity, strength and intelligence. His career
has included two Rugby World Cups, scoring his first try in senior representative Rugby in
the match against Canada at the 2007 tournament. He is also a practicing registered
architect, company director and TV sports commentator. After graduating from the
University of Sydney in 2001 with both the Sir John Sulman and Sunlord Perpetual awards
for design, and the completion of his rugby career in 2011, Al became a registered architect where he
currently specialises in sports, convention + exhibition and master planning projects both in Australia and
South East Asia. Some projects of note that Al has been involved include the SCG Northern Stand and the
Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney, Khalifar Stadium in Qatar and the Indonesian International Exhibition and
Convention Centre, Jakarta.

DR. DARRYL O’BRIEN
Darryl O'Brien, is a lecturer and the Head Of Program for the Building Surveying and Built
Environment courses at the Central Queensland University (CQU). Darryl has a Masters of
Environmental planning from the University of Tasmania and recently obtained his Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) in Architectural and Building Sciences/Technology at CQU. Darryl will be
sharing results from recent research in human interaction with the built environment.
DR. GILL HICKS MBE
Gill Hicks MBE is well known for surviving the London bombings against all odds. A highly
regarded and internationally sought after speaker, she has been recognised with two
Honorary PhD’s from both the London Metropolitan and Kingston Universities for her
contribution to architecture and design, her work promoting the importance of establishing
sustainable peace and her dedication to rehabilitative healthcare. Before the fateful day in
July 2005, Gill had been publishing director of UK architecture, design and contemporary culture magazine
Blue Print, Founding Director of Dangerous Minds design consultancy and Head Curator at the Design
Council. Since Returning to Australia in 2012, Gill has continued to dedicate her life’s work to countering the
destructive messaging of Violent Extremism and to encourage sustainable peace through stronger, cohesive
communities. She became a Mother in January 2013 and was named as the South Australian, Australian of
the Year nominee for the 2015 Australian of the Year Awards.
JOHN EYNON
John Eynon is an enabler, writer and speaker, having qualified as an Architect in 1981, and has
worked in the public and private sectors in architectural practice, main contracting and
consulting. For the last 18 years John has been involved in design management and pre–
construction process for major contractors, with responsibility for design management teams
and also providing functional support and design leadership at all stages of the design and
construction process. He now provides work winning, strategy and process, BIM, design management and
training services through his company Open Water Consulting Ltd. John’s work includes working with: the
CIOB on BIM strategy and regional presentations; a leading consultancy on work winning and bid support; a
BIM implementation business, a leading Major Contractor on knowledge management and several Major
Contractors on Design Management. He is also a STEMNET Ambassador and works with Surrey SATRO, a
leading charity for developing skills in young people in the South East, and Class of Your Own, developing
collaborative working and construction careers education in schools. He lectures and presents at
universities, conferences and workshops. He is author of The Design Manager’s Handbook, published by
Wiley Blackwell, 2013, and the soon to be published #UKBIM2 Guide. He is now researching a PhD on the
impact of BIM and collaboration, at Leeds Beckett University.
