TALK TO CPO program In order to understand the key challenges of the Procurement

Leaders in Hong Kong, especially in people development, our Professional Development

Committee members visited many procurement heads in different organizations. Below are some

highlights for 2016.

Esther shared with us that the key challenges in people development were staff retention and dynamic operational environment, such as multi-cultural, multi-time zone, multi-language, multi-legal requirement and multi-generations etc. Thus, on the people side, HSBC has invested in talent management and set high aspirations for individuals, attracting well-educated management talent from various industries such as IT, finance, quality surveying, legal profession etc. HSBC will also reward outstanding performance by advancing talent into higher positions outside of procurement in parallel with training people on the right skills through job rotation and formal training to build the global talent pool.

Professional Development Committee Members with Ms. Esther Siu (2nd from left)

As head of supply chain of Maxim’s Group, one of the Food & Beverage market leaders, Norbert mentioned that talent with rich F&B experience is limited in Hong Kong. Nonetheless, Maxim’s Group has put a lot of resources in its training programs. Mentoring program with experienced staff together with on-the-job learning opportunities is one of the effective ways to nurture more talents. It is the common goal of the team to become a World-Class Supply Chain Organization. He viewed that a good procurement professional has the characteristics of business acumen, agility to learn new technology, understanding the business and engaging with the interest group for sustainability requirement etc. CIPS could be a platform for practitioners networking for translating academic excellence to best practice and experience sharing.
