My name is Eastman Johnson and I am a Master of Community Planning and Master’s International

student at the University of Cincinnati specializing in International Sustainable Development. The School

of Planning’s Master’s International Program is a joint degree with the Peace Corps; where I complete

one year of studies, go abroad for two years and then return for my second year of classes. This unique opportunity has allowed me to explore how rural communities operate not only from a planning or

design perspective, but also from an administrative standpoint. This exposure to different processes has helped me continue to grow as an individual and as a

professional.

In my sophomore year, my partner isabel zeigler and i created a redevelopment plan for Laurel Park in the West End neighborhood of Cincinnati. The project was part of an independent studio.

In our senior studio my teammate Merridith Murphy and I created a plan for the Bavarian Brewery in Covington, KY. The plan coincided with present and future plans anticipated for the I-75 expansion and Light Rail System. It also connected the new site to Goebels Park.

Madison Avenue Designs has been my father’s Commerical Design company for 27 years. I have contributed through my quick rendering skills along with his sketches to create products for multiple institutions in Kentucky. His business is ran out of our home in Georgetown, KY. Recently we have helped change the face of Georgetown College with several projects.

For two years I was the Recycling Manager for

Cincinnati’s Flying Pig Marathon. I helped design banners, signage,

and monitored volunteers by separating compost, waste, and

recyclables. We acheived a certified ‘Green Event’

certificate from ReSport for the first time in the marathon’s

history.

(below) A park plan I created for the community of Rockford Woods. I responded to an advertisement at school. I met with the Homesowner’s Association for design review and feedback. I phased the project out for budgeting purposes.

While in Peace Corps Morocco I was part of several environmental

projects. My counterpart, Abderrahmane and I worked on the

designs for a ‘Environmental Education Park’ in his

neighborhood. We interviewed the neighbors for suggestions and made changes where needed. I was given a grant for $5,000. Although red-tape

has slowed the implementation process, we are continuing with

design specs and a detailed action plan for the remaining volunteer to

implement easily.

Through my interdisciplinary Sustainable Development class, I participated in a design workshop in Bordeaux, France with the University of Bordeaux’s College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. My temmates Hugo, Mikhalis and I created a new economic model in regards to Energy and Mobility in the year

2043. Our film is called ‘Motilitis’.

Your Peace Corps service will be considered a part of your MCP program, as a replacement for the summer internship requirement.

Eastman served as a student intern for the Seattle Department of Planning and Development (DPD) in early 2011. He worked with our staff on several projects, including an area planning project, the West Seattle Triangle Planning Study, which I managed. During his time on this project, Eastman served as an integral member of the project team, serving in a professional staff member capacity. In addition to serving as an effective team member, Eastman also took responsibility for independent tasks related to the project. One of Eastman’s most valuable contributions was his creation of display boards for the West Seattle Triangle Planning Study open house event. The event was the largest meeting of the project, where staff communicated large amounts of information and solicited community opinions. Eastman designed and produced over 20 display boards on a very tight time frame, taking direction from me and other staff members. In many cases, Eastman was called-upon to use his independent judgment about the design and content of the boards. The boards were extremely well-received. It has been a pleasure to have Eastman on staff during these past few months. He shows excellent initiative and follow-through, attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to take direction and get-along with everyone.
