2016 TARAWERA ULTRAMARATHON MEDIA AND CONTRACTOR BRIEF This is a media supplement to the official Tarawera Ultra 2016 race programme which is available at www.taraweraultra.co.nz The website has complete information about race week, athletes, runners to watch, maps and schedules. OFFICIAL RACE PROGRAMME http://bit.ly/1Wd3hYE The media page on the website contains a media advisory, story angles, images, social media channels, contacts and media accreditation. TARAWERA ULTRA MEDIA PAGE WWW.TARAWERAULTRA.CO.NZ/MEDIA/ The event is one of the world’s premier ultra distance runs, attracting the top athletes with more than 400 international competitors from 39 countries. The world-wide audiences are in the millions with broadcasts to 40 TV channels world-wide in 70 countries. Thousands tune on race day to follow the event online via social media and livestreaming. The vent occurs in an incredible natural landscape and is supported by a Rotorua and Kawerau community who pour their heart and soul into this event. It is a great source of pride to welcome so many runners from all nations to test themselves over our lands on Waitangi Day. Admittedly, this event is challenging to cover – the distances are vast, the terrain is tough, the cell coverage is almost non-existent and only a handful of locals know every inch of the course and all the shortcuts. This guide will help you navigate the 2016 event. The event features both the elite athletes (the race) as well as the ‘everyday athletes’ from the start to the finish late at night (the journey). Because of the terrain and distance it is a challenge to cover both the race and journey aspects. TARAWERA FOREST PERMITS A forest permit is needed if you take a car into the Tarawera Forest (this includes any Aid Station between The Outlet and River Road). Runners do not need permits, only cars. Each car will need to get a forest permit from the Kawerau Information Centre before entering the Tarawera Forest. There are three ways to do this: 1. ONLINE APPLICATION WWW.KAWERAUONLINE.CO.NZ/PERMITS/REQUEST 2. AT REGISTRATION Fill in the form in your race registration pack. There will be spare copies at race registration. You can get your permit issued at race registration. 3. AT KAWERAUGet and complete the form at the Kawerau Information Centre on race day. You will still get a permit but it will likely take a lot longer.

NO PERMIT - NO FOREST ENTRY - NO EXCEPTIONSPlease be courteous to Forest Security on race day. They have an important job to do and it is a privilege for all of us to be able to access this land which is both commercially and culturally important.

2016 VIP PROGRAMME Please register. All media are invited to be part of the 2016 VIP Tour. This includes the welcome barbecue, Lake Tarawera boat cruise and a hangi dinner. Key people involved with the 2016 event (elite runners, organisers, tourism authorities, sponsors and organisers from other Ultra Trail World Tour events) will be at the VIP Tour events, which are excellent interview opportunities. KEY SHOT LIST FOR MEDIA CONTRACTORS cont...* MEDIA ACCESS ONLY. NO PUBLIC ALLOWED + NEW FOR 2016

BOAT VS. ROTOITI ROAD SPLIT FROM OKATAINA

Media teams have two options: 1. LAKE ROUTE

Take the boat to the far end of Lake Okataina, walk over the isthmus to Humphries Bay and continue by boat to The Outlet. Shots of runners from the water on Lake Okataina, single track near the lake, traversing the isthmus between Okataina and Lake Tarawera and shots of the Humphries Bay aid station, plus shots of runners in the bush near Humphries Bay and runners alongside the lake near The Outlet. You will need someone from the media team to pick you up.

2. LAND ROUTE Take the Rotoiti shortcut road to Tarawera Falls. This saves you 40 minutes. It allows direct access to the Tarawera Falls area (60km finish line and waterfall track).

The Rotoiti Road entrance is opposite 1303 State Highway 30 (this is after the Okataina turnoff). It is directly opposite the Rotoiti rugby field where public cars and buses will be parked. It is a winding dirt forestry road – a 4WD is not necessary – but the road can be rough in places. It saves 40 minutes getting to Tarawera Falls. Near the end of this road (after coming down the long hill) you should see cars and signs going to the Tarawera Falls road on your right. Follow all signs to the Tarawera Falls.

TARAWERA WATERFALL TRACK.

There are four options: 1. Film from the Outlet downstream – turn around and exit via the Outlet.

You will get the river, rocks Outlet aid station and single track. 2. Film from the Tarawera Falls – go above the Falls and turn around

and exit via Tarawera falls Track. You will get the best river shots, the waterfalls, cascades and bridges.

3. Travel from The Outlet to the Falls (5km). You will get everything. You will be moving in the same direction as the runners.

4. Travel from The Falls to the Outlet (5km). You will get everything. You will be moving in the opposite direction as the runners (preferred). OUTLET http://bit.ly/1KrJwpe TARAWERA FALLS http://bit.ly/1nnJn1F
