LOMAKATSI—2016 Policies and Procedures-For Employee: _____________
About This Handbook
The following pages contain information regarding the workforce policies and procedures of Lomakatsi Restoration Project and Lomakatsi Ecological Services (hereby referred to as "LOMAKATSI”). The policies and procedures outlined in this handbook will be applied at the discretion of LOMAKATSI. LOMAKATSI reserves the right to deviate from the policies and procedures of this handbook, or to withdraw or change them, at any time. We will notify you when an official change in policy or procedure has been made. Otherwise, these guidelines are to be followed as closely as possible.
Policies and Procedures
1. Attendance & Punctuality
Punctuality, regular attendance and adherence to a set schedule are important to the smooth operation of LOMAKATSI. If you are excessively absent, LOMAKATSI’s ability to perform work is affected and an unfair burden is placed on your co-workers. Therefore, unless your absence is permitted or excused by LOMAKATSI’s supervisory staff with the approval of your supervisor, you are responsible for being at work and arriving on time. If you are going to be absent or late, it is your responsibility to call your crew boss and supervisor as soon as possible, preferably in advance of lateness and no later than one hour after the start of the workday. If you are absent for several days, you must notify your crew boss and supervisor each day. An employee who is absent for reasons other than those permitted or excused by LOMAKATSI management, or who repeatedly fails to provide notice as required, will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including discharge.
o Example of permitted reasons: Contagious sickness, injury, family emergencies, health appointments, and other serious health concerns. Lomakatsi will consider any reasonable request by employee for a permitted absence.
o Excessive absenteeism, even if for potentially “validated” reasons, can also lead to warning and termination.
2. Job Abandonment
Employee’s that are absent for more than two consecutive days without notifying a direct supervisor are considered to have voluntarily abandoned their employment with the company. The effective date of termination will be the 2nd day you do not report for work.
3. Disciplinary Policies and Problem Resolution
LOMAKATSI seeks to deal openly and directly with its employees and believes that communication between employees and management is critical to solving problems. Co-workers that may have a problem with one another should attempt to resolve the problem themselves outside of work. If a resolution cannot be agreed upon, both employees should approach their supervisor(s), who will work with the employees to determine a resolution. In these instances, the decision of the supervisor is final.
Employees that have a problem with crew management should first go to them and calmly communicate their grievances. If a resolution cannot be agreed upon, the employee should
P a g e | 3
LOMAKATSI—2016 Policies and Procedures-For Employee: _____________
present the problem in writing or e-mail to the workforce supervisor. Or in the case with a workforce supervisor the employee should present the problem in writing or e-mail to the executive management.
LOMAKATSI will not tolerate the use or possession of alcohol or illegal drugs on the job or on company property. Employees using or possessing alcohol or illegal drugs on company property or while at work or who report to work under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including discharge. (see LOMAKATSI Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy).
LOMAKATSI takes threats of violence extremely seriously. Any act or threat of violence by or against any employee, customer, supplier, partner or visitor is strictly prohibited. This policy applies to all company employees, whether on or off company property.
4. Termination
LOMAKATSI does not have tenure or guaranteed employment. LOMAKATSI may terminate your employment at any time for any reason. Termination may result from any of the following: (i) Corrective action measures, which include infractions for violation of company policies, (ii) involuntary dismissal, which may include poor performance reviews or failure to demonstrate an acceptable attitude in the workplace.
Corrective Action is taken against an employee in response to a rule infraction or a violation of policies and will continue until the violation or infraction is corrected. Corrective Action usually begins with one or two verbal warnings, potentially followed by a written warning, depending on the reason for corrective action. If more serious corrective action is required, the employee may be put on probation, or have their employment terminated with a minimum warning.
LOMAKATSI has a policy that attempts to deal constructively with employee performance problems and errors. The disciplinary process will be determined by LOMAKATSI in light of the facts and circumstances of each case. The discipline applied may include, among other things, oral or written warnings, probation, suspension without pay, or immediate discharge. Each situation will be considered in a variety of factors such as; the seriousness of the situation, the employee's past conduct and length of service, and the nature of the employee's previous performance or incidents involving the employee.
LOMAKATSI considers some violations as grounds for immediate dismissal, including, but not limited to: insubordinate behavior, theft, destruction of company property, drug or alcohol abuse, or threats of violence. Any use or possession of weapons, whether illegal or not, is prohibited on company property, or while on company business. This includes knives, guns, martial arts weapons, or any other object that is used as a weapon. Any employee caught possessing a weapon will be disciplined, up to and including termination.
5. Termination Process and Final Paycheck Distribution.
P a g e | 4
LOMAKATSI—2016 Policies and Procedures-For Employee: _____________
LOMAKATSI requires that employees return all company owned property on or before the last day of work. When all company owned property has been collected, the employee will receive their final paycheck. If you quit, a final check will be sent at end of pay period.
6. Availability for Work
Employees must be available for work during defined work hours, normally consisting of Monday through Friday, or a normal 40-hour work week. If, for any reason, there is a change in your work availability status, you must notify your supervisor at least one week prior to the change. Each employee is required to request, at least 2 weeks in advance, of the dates of all requested vacation or leave time desired to be taken. There is no guarantee we can meet the requests. We will let you know after staff discusses it.
7. Evaluations
Random evaluations will occur by LOMAKATSI management to evaluate your overall job performance and compatibility with LOMAKATSI. Should your performance not meet the standards set forth by LOMAKATSI or your supervisor, we will attempt to meet with you to resolve the issue. We reserve the right to terminate employment if necessary changes are not made upon 2 verbal warnings and 1 written warning.
8. Breaks
LOMAKATSI will at a minimum meet all federal and state labor regulations pertaining to daily work hours and breaks. LOMAKATSI crew bosses determine appropriate lunch and breaks for daily needs. Typically, employees working an 8-hour day are provided with two 10 minute paid rest breaks for every four hour segment of work: one scheduled earlier in the day and the other in the afternoon. Additionally, a 30-minute unpaid lunch break will be scheduled within the daily routine. We will do our best to standardize breaks as much as possible to alleviate hunger and thirst, but LOMAKATSI reserves the right to alter the timing based on daily circumstances. We recommend employees always carry a water bottle and even a small snack.
9. Hourly Wage Increases
Wage increases are based on performance, promotion and amount of responsibility and are at the discretion of an employee supervisor’s recommendations to executive staff.
10. Personal Safety
The safety of each employee's health and security is very important to LOMAKATSI. LOMAKATSI is willing to make reasonable efforts to address an employee's safety concerns. Employees should use caution and good judgment in all activities and should notify their supervisor if they believe there is a safety issue that should be addressed. The crew boss at a minimum will conduct a “tailgate” safety meeting every morning and keep logs of safety concerns.

11. Worker’s Compensation
LOMAKATSI requires employees report job-related accidents or injuries to management immediately. Failure to report an injury, regardless of how minor, could result in difficulty with the employee’s claim.
All workers’ compensation claims will be paid directly to employees and employees are expected to return to work immediately upon release by their doctor.
Time loss and light duty policy: LOMAKATSI reserves the right upon “modified release” to provide suitable light duty work for employees. This will be based on the type and severity of the injury and needs of the company.
12. Unlawful Harassment
LOMAKATSI will attempt to maintain a work environment that nourishes respect for each individual. It is against the policies of LOMAKATSI for an employee to harass another person because of the person's sex, race, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, or other characteristic protected by law. Actions, words, jokes, or comments based on such characteristics will not be tolerated and subject to disciplinary action.

Program Preparation Before the Program Starts:
Stay in shape! Get outside and stay active. Make sure you are acclimated to the summer heat.
In the Morning:
Please eat a healthy, complete breakfast ahead of time to insure you have enough energy to carry you
through until lunch. You will exert a lot of energy and will need to make sure you have enough calories
to last you throughout the day. Also, make sure you drink plenty of liquids in the morning and
throughout the day. Dehydration can affect your ability to work and is a serious health risk. Potassium
also helps combat dehydration. We recommend to that you consume foods high in potassium such as
bananas.
Lomakatsi Will Provide:
Work Gloves
Helmets
Water refill jugs
Eye protection
Additional safety gear
A notebook and pen/pencil to take notes during guest specialist presentations
Participant Field Clothing Requirements:
We recommend you purchase polyester blended clothes that breathe. Cotton-based clothing tends to
hold a lot of water weight from sweating. We also recommend you shop at a Goodwill or used clothing
store to purchase affordable clothing as work clothes tend to get torn in the field. Required clothing
include:
Ankle supportive hiking boots
Sturdy work pants (jeans, Carharts, Dickies, or something similar)
Light colored long sleeve shirt for protection from vegetation, insects (bees), and sun exposure.
T-shirt or tank top
Rain gear (if there’s rain)
Cloth handkerchief
What to Bring:
Large lunch
Morning and afternoon snacks (try to pack healthy food that is not full of sugar)
At least two quart sized water bottles (in the morning, put ice in the water bottles)
