HeritageCollective
2016 was an exciting year for Heritage Collective UK Limited. Growth and
diversification were key drivers resulting in the creation of the newest
company in the collective brand, Landscape Collective. Our expansion,
both within the heritage sector and into the contemporary landscape
sector, has forged new relationships and consolidated existing ties. We are
pleased to see so many new faces, brought on in all three disciplines and
with a varied range of skills and experience, becoming part of our future.
Delivering enhanced services to our growing client base will be a key
objective over the coming months, and we look forward to a busy year of
confident and steady growth in 2017.

A mixed use redevelopment in and around Glaxo House, a grade II listed building developed in the mid 1930s as the headquarters of the Glaxo Smith Kline Group by Wallis Gilbert and Partners. Planning permission and listed building consent were granted for the outline scheme, following an EIA, in 2014. Landscape Collective produced the LVIA for this new American-style mixed use development of leasehold apartments, shops, gym and school, and commissioned verified views and computer generated images. Heritage Collective recorded the listed structure, assessed the effects of the development on the nearby Regents Canal Conservation Area and continue to advise and assess the most recent proposals for development. Archaeology Collective produced a desk-based assessment and liaised with the Historic England regional science advisor via the Greater London Archaeology Advisory Service (GLAAS). Several stages of information exchange ensued, resulting in a second stage of geoarchaeological reporting. The development team has been able to continue moving forward with no additional fieldwork on site required.

NHS BUILDINGS Eight hospital sites in London and the south-east including modest cottage style buildings, large-scale Victorian developments and early-mid 20th century examples ranging from buildings of merit right through to grade I listed.
SE VER ALL S HOSPITALColchester a large, echelon-style psychiatric hospital, laid out from 1910 with a grade II listed administration building and the grade II Severalls Hospital Registered Historic Park and Garden;
R ADLE Y COLLEGE CHAPELA grade II* building where Heritage Collective were brought in to advise on entrants to a design competition for extension; and
ST MARY’S CHURCHStoke Newington, a grade II* listed George Gilbert Scott church that has real need for change to reflect the evolving community.
The consolidation of Archaeology Collective in 2016 saw Joe Abrams joining as Associate Director, supported by John Lord as Senior Archaeologist. Joe is a commercial archaeologist with 18 years’ experience, most recently at Headland Archaeology. He has extensive experience of managing archaeological projects, project bidding and the discharge of planning conditions. His expertise includes the identification and reduction of risk for clients. Benefit is gained from his extensive experience tendering for, and managing budgets on, large-scale commercial projects (rail schemes, housing developments, highways schemes and utilities). Joe has experience operating under NEC contracts, using CEMAR and similar packages to issue, agree and challenge early warnings and compensation events. John Lord joins the team from EDP Ltd, and our latest recruit Adrian Parry joins from Mouchel .
In December 2016 Archaeology Collective became a registered organisation with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists. Recent projects include:
• Candlet Lane, Suffolk – a field evaluation over 30 hectares;
• Chislet Colliery, Canterbury, coal extraction;
• 161-165 Borough High Street, Southwark commercial property development; and
• Dagenham retail park, commercial property development.

In the spotlight
The launch of Landscape Collective in January 2016 brought three new core disciplines - Landscape Strategy, Landscape Design and Arboriculture. Landscape Collective has a bespoke advanced plugin for Vectorworks, which enables the cost-effective creation of tree survey plans. We have invested in laser measurement technology and ipad tablets to improve the efficiency and accuracy of data capture for tree survey plans. The team is led by Stephen Wadsworth, assisted by Dave Paginton who was promoted to Associate in August 2016. Stuart Hocking joined the Landscape Collective team in September 2016 as Senior Landscape Architect. Landscape Collective is featured in ‘Build’ Magazine, December 2016.

In 2015 Heritage Collective collaborated with Knox Bavan Architects and Robinson Escott Planning on a new detached dwelling within the curtilage of a grade II listed building in College Road, Dulwich dating from 1721, located within Dulwich Village Conservation Area. Planning permission was granted by Southwark Council in October 2016. During the 18th and 19th centuries the grounds of the listed building were landscaped with a sinuous canal with an ornamental bridge that linked paths on either side. The proposed dwelling spans the restored canal so that the ornamental bridge becomes part of an outstanding design by an award-winning firm of architects.
Heritage Collective advised on the effect on the character and appearance of the conservation area, and the setting of the listed building, and Archaeology Collective prepared the mitigation for the piled foundations.

Historic Research is a core discipline which spans all three Collectives, but which primarily resides with Dr Hannah Chavasse in Heritage Collective. Liz Scott joined the team in 2016, adding to our capability which typically involves the scrutiny of historic plans and maps, title deeds and other legal documents deposited in record offices throughout the U.K.

Building recording is undertaken by Jody O’Reilly, assisted by Adam Dyson who joined Heritage Collective in September 2016. Projects often run in parallel with an archaeological watching brief in association with Archaeology Collective. Three recent projects resulted from planning conditions to record before the commencement of works – (1) The Judge’s Lodgings at Maynetrees in Chelmsford, Essex (BFDesign Solutions Ltd); (2) 18 Thames Street, Windsor (Byron Hamburgers Ltd); and (3) The former police station and superintendent’s house and former Corn Exchange in Aylesbury (Buckinghamshire County Council).

Archaeology Collective was commissioned to assess the potential impact of a housing proposal on the setting of a scheduled monument - in this instance a Bronze Age barrow. The barrow had been excavated in the early 20th century and had been shown to seal earlier activity.
Given the careful design which our clients had completed, our assessment was that the setting of the barrow would not be adversely impacted. We drew attention to the potential for associated undesignated remains at the application site and offered advice on the best means to approach this issue in the context of development work.

A basement extension is proposed for this site which is on the edge of the City of London. The site contains significant remains from every period since the Roman city was built, and it is into this layered archaeological story that a basement is to be excavated.
This relatively constrained residential development site is typical of the projects we regularly undertake within Greater London. In this instance, we were approached at a point in the programme where the conditions related to contaminated land and archaeology were being dealt with. The timing of these operations needed to be choreographed with the programme for demolition at the site. Trial trenching was completed in late 2016, during which the impressive remains of a 19th century Mission Church were recorded.

Landscape Collective was commissioned by Rydon Homes to undertake two Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments to form part of Environmental Statements accompanying an application for a development of 130 residential dwellings and another for 460 residential dwellings and associated open space. We also carried out the landscape design in relation to the entrance gateway to the development. This involved the design of a Locally Equipped Area for Play (LEAP) and areas for outdoor gym and trim trial equipment and strategic landscaping. As part of the planning application submission, Landscape Collective prepared the Green Infrastructure, Landscape and Open Space section of the Design and Access Statement (DAS).
Landscape Collective was commissioned by JSL (Trevenson) Limited to carry out an LVIA for a proposed 63 bedroom budget hotel near Camborne in Cornwall. This included a family pub/restaurant, two drive-through restaurants and parking, servicing and landscaping. We also prepared the landscape masterplan and the detailed planting plan, and we coordinated the Design and Access Statement and public consultation. Permission was granted in January 2017.
