Staffordshire County Council’s Adult and Community Learning Service works with a range of learning providers across the county to deliver innovative, stimulating and engaging Community Learning programmes for adults using, where appropriate, informal community-based venues. This wide range of learning activities and courses help to improve the lives of Staffordshire residents
Community Learning encompasses programmes and activities covering a spectrum of learning including:
First Steps to Employability courses targeted at adults below level 2 who have not recently engaged in learning and/or are unemployed who want to improve their chances of finding work
STEM Preparatory programmes in Science, Technology Engineering and/or Mathematics, leading to further study or employment in these sectors
Functional Skills courses for adults who lack essential skills in English, maths or Information Technology and do not want to or are not yet ready to enrol on an accredited course
Leisure or recreational courses for adults who wish to develop a skill, acquire knowledge, pursue an interest for the purpose of cultural enrichment, intellectual or creative stimulation and improve health and fitness
Programmes for adults with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, and/or those with enduring mental ill health which include leisure, first steps to functional skills provision
Community Learning Trust Responsiveness Fund (CLTRF) which offers local grants for the delivery of needs led adult learning programmes
Family programmes which include Wider Family Learning (WFL) and Family English, Maths and Language (FEML) which aim to encourage family members to learn together
Wider Family Learning Grants for schools to deliver family learning programmes which are designed to enable adults and children to learn together or help adults to support their children’s learning.
The Service aims to be responsive to the needs of the community, whilst delivering high quality and cost effective outcomes and operating within the regulations and guidance of the relevant funding bodies and inspectorates.

COURSE OVERVIEW: The course aims to educate and provide an introduction for learners about henna techniques, knowledge and skills allowing learners to release their creativity with the use of henna and fashion trends as well as individual preferences. The course will include how to prepare the henna paste, how to make a cone for applying the henna, basic elements of a design, practising simple designs on paper, building up designs for hands, arms and feet, practising designs on yourself and others. Learners will learn about different skin types and suitable products, various henna tools and how to maintain henna after application for best results. We provide accredited ESOL classes in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire. These are for people who may have little formal education and want to improve their English. The courses run over various hours in a community venue in your area. The tutors are friendly and approachable. They will support your learning and help you reach your goals. The course will help improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. It will allow you to get more out of living in the local community. The courses normally last 6-7weeks. They include guidance on the basic use of a computer or their device, internet and e-mail. These cost £10 each or are free if you are looking for work, or in receipt of an income related benefit or eligible for library concessions.

They are suitable for those with some basic knowledge of using a computer or other device. Learners normally need to have previously completed a basic course. ABOUT USCARE Wellbeing and First Steps to Employability ALDD Courses. CARE is a farm based rural activities and skills project that supports wellbeing and encourages everyone to take an interest and enjoy the natural environment around them, harnessing this natural energy to help us feel well and fulfilled in our own lives.
Our Four Seasons Wellbeing and First Steps to Employability Courses support ALDD Adults (19+) with mental health issues, including those with long term or enduring conditions as well as young adults, new adult learners, also those from rural areas. CARE provides transport to and from the project from Stafford and Cannock and courses are held in South Staffs, Cannock Chase, Rugeley and Stafford districts.
New friendships, exploring old and new interests, social contact, laughter and wellbeing all flourish alongside our activities. These include animal care and therapy; gardening and horticulture; woodwork and woodcraft/willow weaving; arts and crafts; photography; water colour painting; cookery; independent living skills; wellbeing walks.
Since 2012 our ACL ALDD courses have received extremely positive feedback from learners, professional partners and local community mental health teams. For some they bring to life long forgotten skills, and renewed enjoyment; for others it brings a whole new aspect to their lives – exercise, socialisation, new interests, friendship. Everyone taking part is incredibly proud of what they achieve, including:

ABOUT USInteract Arts is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company based in Stafford, which delivers community programmes across all 8 Districts in Staffordshire. We provide Employability Skills programmes for those learners who have few qualifications and wish to develop their skills to progress to further learning / training, employment or volunteering and arts-based programmes for Adults with Learning Difficulties / Disabilities or those with enduring mental health issues.
Our approach is to engage people in practical activities which will develop confidence and self esteem, improve health and wellbeing and develop personal, social, emotional and creative skills.
Our small team of tutors are well qualified and are passionate about developing people and have many years experience of providing high quality learning programmes for people in their local community. We create opportunities for ‘fun, informal learning’, where everyone is fully engaged and involved in their learning.
We work in partnership with a wide range of community-based organisations and tailor-make our courses to meet the particular needs of individual learners and groups and have received outstanding feedback from learners and partner organisations.
Our range of creative programmes include Photography, Drama, Film / Video Making, Arts and Crafts, Puppetry, Music, Our Environment and Famous Historical Characters. ABOUT USFounded in 1903, the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) is a charity dedicated to bringing high-quality, professional education into the heart of communities. With the support of nearly 3,000 volunteers, 2,000 tutors and over 10,000 members, we deliver friendly, accessible and enjoyable courses for adults from all walks of life.
Assessed ‘Good’ by Ofsted in 2014, we have classes in almost every area of England and Scotland. You do not need any previous knowledge or qualifications to join most of our courses, only a willingness to share with others your curiosity, ideas and experience.
We also have a special mission to raise aspirations and develop educational opportunities for the most disadvantaged. ABOUT USWe run an organisation called West Chadsmoor Family Centre in West Chadsmoor in Cannock. We have been running for 21 years and are well established in the area. We offer activities for families in the local area where parents and children can attend with their children and the learn together.
We have become a hub in the local area where families drop in to find information and support when they need it. As part of this activity we hold a contract with Staffordshire County Council known as Adult and Community Learning. With is contract we offer adult learning classes and these can range from cooking, craft making, aromatherapy to English and computer classes. The courses are designed to begin the learning journey for adults who have been out of education for a while.
