Dear Friends,
We extend our cordial invitation to participate in the National Conference
on Relevance of Sushruta's Concepts of Surgery in Present Era” and the Pre-
conference Workshop on Minor Surgical Procedures” jointly organized by
Department of Shalya Tantra, Faculty of Ayurveda, Institute of Medical
Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in association with National
Sushruta Association, India on April 6-8, 2017.
It is believed that the practice of surgery in ancient India developed and
prospered in this holy city of Varanasi, under the patronage of King of Varanasi,
Diwodas Dhanwantari who himself were a renowned surgeon of that era. The
art of surgery was further developed by his disciple Sushruta, who laid down
the fundamentals of surgical practice in the first surgical text of Indian history,
Sushruta Samhita based on the teachings of Lord Dhanwantari and his own
practical experiences. Sushruta covered a wide range of surgical domains
ranging from basic surgical skills and training to various major elective and
emergency surgical procedures in his treatise.
Though the advent of new techniques has completely transformed the
practice of surgery over the period of time, many of the fundamental concepts
& ethics postulated by Sushruta still hold valid today. In this dynamic era of
scientific and technological developments, the relevance of Sushruta's
concepts is needed to be evaluated and redefined. Sushruta Samhita is the
basic text of Shalya Tantra being taught at all the institutes along with other
surgical literature. However, there is a lack of homogeneity in the teaching and
training of Shalya Tantra which also needs an evaluation. The conference aims
at to provide a national platform for both the young and experienced scholars
to share their views over these burning issues of today's era.
Banaras Hindu University is an internationally reputed temple of learning
producing leaders worldwide who have contributed to the development of
various systems fulfilling the dream of nation building. With a long list of
accomplishments, the Department of Shalya Tantra has constantly been a part
of the transcendent activities in the development of the Shalya Tantra at the
national and international levels. Prof. PJ Deshpande, Dr. PS Shankaran, Prof.
LM Singh, Prof. GC Prasad, Prof. KR Sharma, Dr. SN Pathak are some of the
names of the legendary torchbearers from the department who have devoted
their lifetimes to the development of the system by their multidimensional
approach based on the fundamental paths shown by Sushruta. Department of
Shalya Tantra welcomes you all at the learning universe of Banaras Hindu
University to be a part of this scientific fest.
