HarmoniaSaturday, November 4, 2017

7:30 pm @ The ArcLight Cinemas (The Glen)Sarah, the harpist of the Jerusalem Philharmonic, and Abraham, theorchestra’s conductor, are married and without child. When Hagar, ayoung horn player from East Jerusalem joins the western side orchestra,Sarah's world changes. The two women are irresistibly drawn to eachother, developing a unique friendship that is challenged when Hagaroffers to be a surrogate for Abraham’s child. A story of musical andgenerational bonds unfolds. Harmonia is inspired by the biblical talefrom the book of Genesis, giving a feminine interpretation to the storyof the “mothers” and their two half-brother boys. This telling reflects onthe metaphoric origin of the historic clash between the two conflictedpeoples, now seeking harmony through the world of classical music.

WINNER: Five Ophir nominations, including Best Supporting Actress,Best Cinematography and Best Sound

g Maimonides - A Man for All Seasons: Guide to PersonalDevelopment and Ritual Activity

Maimonides’ tombstone states: “From Moses to Moses, there was no one likeMoses.” That brief, succinct, expression grants us insight into MosesMaimonides’ contribution to our Torah heritage. Just as Moses gave the Jewsthe written law, Rambam (Rabbi Moses ben Maimon), as he is known, intendedthe Mishneh Torah to provide them with “a compilation of the entire Oral Law,including also the ordinances, customs, and decrees that were enacted from thetime of Moses, our teacher, until the completion of the Talmud,” so that “aperson will not need another text at all with regard to any Jewish Law.”

We will study and discuss the Mishneh Torah along with other works of thisremarkable Jew, using an English translation of the text. We will examine whatMaimonides writes regarding such issues as: the study of Torah, personaldevelopment, daily activities and the observance of the holidays.

Thisincludes both existing and potential synagogue members.

Keruv exists to meet people where they are and to help them make Jewish choicesthrough education and participation in the life of CBS. It seeks to educate thecongregation-at-large about the importance of Keruv by fostering anunderstanding of its purpose, and its benefits to the synagogue, the ConservativeMovement, and the Jewish people. It also exists to aid the non-Jewish member ofan interfaith relationship in supporting the Jewish partner’s observance of Judaism. Finally, Keruv exists to welcome the non-Jewish partner and to encourage his/herparticipation to the extent desired.

We invite interfaith families to participate in a broad range of CBS programs andevents in order to enable you to understand and experience firsthand the rich,

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2017Meet the Author - 7:30 pm

Author presentation - 8:00 pm following evening minyan$5 Sisterhood Members or $7.50 for Non-Sisterhood Members

One very special work of art—aChaim Soutine painting—willconnect the lives and fates of twodifferent women, generationsapart, in this enthralling and transporting debut novelthat moves from World War II Vienna to contemporaryLos Angeles.

It is 1939 in Vienna, and as the specter of war darkensEurope, Rose Zimmer’s parents are desperate. Unableto get out of Austria, they manage to secure passagefor their young daughter on a kindertransport, andsend her to live with strangers in England.

Six years later, the war finally over, a grief-stricken Roseattempts to build a life for herself. Alone in London,

devastated, she cannot help but try to search out one piece of her childhood: theChaim Soutine painting her mother had cherished.

Many years later, the painting finds its way to America. In modern-day Los Angeles,Lizzie Goldstein has returned home for her father’s funeral. Newly single and unsureof her path, she also carries a burden of guilt that cannot be displaced. Years ago,as a teenager, Lizzie threw a party at her father’s house with unexpected but far-reaching consequences. The Soutine painting that she loved and had providedlasting comfort to her after her own mother had died was stolen, and has neverbeen recovered.

This painting will bring Lizzie and Rose together and ignite an unexpectedfriendship, eventually revealing long-held secrets that hold painful truths. Spanningdecades and unfolding in crystalline, atmospheric prose, The Fortunate Ones is ahaunting story of longing, devastation, and forgiveness, and a deep examination ofthe bonds and desires that map our private histories.
