Activate, Engage, Produce:

This year you will see these

three words over and over as we

take a deep dive into creative

experiences. Artists will be present

in classrooms, creative learning will

take place all over across campus,

and work created here will extend

to other venues.

I hope you will explore many of

these creative experiences this year.

Creative Curricular Initiatives is a

new program for faculty, staff, and

students to explore the arts in new

ways (see page 10).

I am especially pleased to be

working with several “Made@GT”

projects on the Ferst Center stage

this year. Take a look inside this

brochure and join me!

Imagination comes alive at Georgia

Tech because our students, faculty,

and staff experience art at the

intersection of engineering, science,

and technology. We strive to

provide opportunities that engage

creative interests and help our

community find and express their

own artistic voice. This season,

Arts@Tech will once again reach

across campus, bringing unique

and bold programming that will

excite and enrich the entire Georgia

Tech community and greater

Atlanta. My wife, Pat, and I are fans

of jazz, blues, and big band, and

we are always thrilled to see our

students perform and share the

stage with the professionals. We

are looking forward to enjoying

the likes of Adam Ben Ezra,

Rebirth Brass Band, Miguel Zenon

Quartet, and our very own GT Jazz

Ensemble. Thank you for joining us!

It is with great anticipation that we

begin the new academic year with

such a wide array of arts, cultural,

and entertainment activities at

Georgia Tech.

Many are surprised to learn how

many of our students have strong

backgrounds in music, writing, or

visual or performing arts. Just

as surprising, many students

get involved in new creative

experiences while here.

Every year I look forward to seeing

the incredibly talented students

who perform in the School of Music,

and in the DramaTech productions.

I hope you’ll join me at Surround

Sounds, the play High Ground,

the Art Crawl, or any of the great

student events this year!

Welcome to a Great Year of the Arts on Campus!

engageCreative Curricular Initiatives Support is now available for faculty who are interested in bringing visiting artists into the curriculum, infusing teaching and research with creative practice. The Arts Curricular Innovations (ACI) program, funded by a grant from the Strategic Plan Advisory Group, will support and promote courses across campus that engage with the arts and collaborate with visiting artists to teach creative thinking in the context of existing course objectives. In addition, a new Arts Council Fellows (ACF) program will support and interconnect faculty, students, and staff in the conception and implementation of unit-level initiatives related to arts and academics. ACI applications are open to current faculty; ACF applications are open to faculty, staff, and students.

Pianos for PeaceSeptember 1-18

Georgia Tech joins multiple venues citywide for Pianos for Peace, an annual festival of music using colorful, painted pianos to inspire artists and unite people in the community. For two weeks, vibrant pianos are placed in public venues and neighborhoods in Atlanta for everyone to enjoy and play.

Coordinated on campus by the new Art Matters student group, look for the piano outside of the Ferst Center for the Arts. After the two-week outdoor festival, Pianos for Peace will donate all pianos to metro Atlanta schools, nursing homes, community centers, healthcare facilities and other organizations in need.

Guthman Musical Instrument CompetitionMarch 7-8, 2018 In this annual event to find the world’s best new ideas in musical instrument design, engineering, and performance, finalists from all over the world compete for $10,000 in prizes, including a $5,000 First Prize.

The Guthman Musical Instrument Competition is designed to show how extraordinary ideas have the potential to change the way music is made and experienced. Featuring a distinguished panel of judges, the event has garnered significant attention on the national and international stage, and complements the rigorous research underway in the field of music technology, performance, and education at Georgia Tech.

Prior to the Guthman competition, Georgia Tech students compete in the Moog Hackathon, a two-day competition with $5000 in prizes, and the winner proceeds to the Guthman event.

Under the CouchUnder the Couch offers Georgia Tech students a space to explore talents, recharge, and connect with others who are passionate about the arts. This student-driven space in the Student Center can help you connect your interest in music to other students and local Atlanta venues.

The space is open from 9am-6pm Monday through Friday and is accessible to students for events, classes, and other opportunities to engage with the arts. Under the Couch also provides a variety of programs throughout the year to learn about music, enjoy local bands, and even to decompress during the stressful times of the year.
