3rd Platform IT Spending by Key Country, 2017 %

Traditional ICT is now a mature sector of the economy, growing not much faster than GDP. The next wave of ICT growth will come from new 3rd Platform technologies which represent an expansion into new market categories. As platforms such as IoT, robotics and AR/VR grow into a larger proportion of spending, they will drive an acceleration back to 3x GDP growth in the next decade.

Some emerging markets have lagged mature economies during the first wave of 3rd Platform spending, but are now playing catch-up as economies recover and businesses begin to deploy DX workloads. This is creating opportunities in fast-growing countries like India, Turkey and Argentina.

Many emerging markets, like China, have invested heavily in mobility and IoT. These countries tend to lag behind in cloud adoption, due in part to weaker telecom infrastructure and inadequate software channels. As cloud is a major enabler for software-driven technologies like cognitive AI and BDA, both infrastructure investments and structural changes are needed.
