Homemade Cucumber Mint Breeze Water was justone of the delicious and thirst-quenching surprisesthat we provided at a special booth on game days. Allfree of charge, our treats were gratefully well-received. Early intervention nutrition education in thetribal communities is just one highlight of anothergreat year for Inter Tribal Sports.

Of course our athletic programs are the lifeblood ofwhat we do. Sports is the hook that brings kids andfamilies to us. In serving over 1800 youth in 2017,we achieved some significant milestones:

All in all, 2017 was another great year. We never takeour successes for granted or our struggles asanything more than opportunities to learn and growstronger. It is only by virtue of our enthusiasticcommunities, impassioned board members, andancillary friends, that we are able to continue this funand meaningful work. As you take in our Year InReview, keep in mind that none of this would bepossible without people like you!

2 ITS - 2017ANNUALREPORT

Haawka! Greetings! (Translation from Iipaay ‘Aa, theKumeyaay language)

Inter Tribal Sports was founded on the ideal ofproviding opportunities for Native Youth. To that end,it is with pride that we welcomed Isaiah Thompsonback into the fold this year! A former participant ofour youth programs, Isaiah was hired straight out ofcollege to be our Program Coordinator. We are proudto have the former cross country athlete from UCIrvine working for ITS and proudly representing histribe, the San Pasqual Band of Diegueno MissionIndians. Isaiah is not the first alumnus of Inter TribalSports to work for the organization; but he might bethe most accomplished. We feel so fortunate to be hisfirst stop in what will surely be a long and illustriouscareer!

It is more than coincidence that 2017 also saw ourFamily Fun Run held on the campus of Isaiah’s AlmaMater, Sherman Indian High School in Riverside.Over 200 Native Youth participated in a day ofhealthy activity and education. Our mascot Rez Doggeven came out to show the kids how to do a few funand vigorous dance moves. Held in late November, this event surely helped everyone burn off a few ofthose extra holiday calories.

Throughout the year, our Rez Dogg’s RefreshmentsProgram provided a platform to educate ourcommunity about the benefits of healthy eating anddrinking.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

BRIAN VANWANSEELEBoard President

Page 5: 2017 Annual Report Final Draft - Amazon Web Services · Dog Refreshments and nutrition education throughout our service area. ... School (SIHS) is an off-reservation boarding high

The 2017 year was a year of great accomplishments. Thanks to the effort of 35 different tribal boardmembers, 7 dedicated ITS administrative staff, 9energetic Site Supervisors, community programs, and tribal and grant funders. ITS impacted over 1100youth in our athletic, culture, leadership andwellness programs across multiple counties inSouthern California!

Through the efforts of these stakeholders, ITS wasable to expand its service area and bring in a neworganization to the program. Sherman Indian HighSchool (SIHS) is an off-reservation boarding highschool for Native Americans that is located inRiverside county. Their students represent over 76federally recognized tribes from across the UnitedStates. All of their students are enrolled members offederally recognized tribes and a majority of theirstudents come from reservations throughout theUnited States. This new partnership allowed ITS tohave the 1st Annual Youth & Family Fun Run at SIHSwhere we were able to service over 200 energeticcommunity members in a free running event thatoffered fun games, a DJ, food, and a variety of guestspeakers.

Reaching youth from multiple counties and tribesrequires great effort and collaboration on manylevels not only to deliver sports but culture, leadership and wellness programs as well. The 2017year brought many successes and memories that willnever be forgotten.

None of the above would be possible without theoutstanding support of our volunteers, tribalsponsors, grant funders and individual contributors. It is with their generous support that we were able tohave many highlights in 2017. There were significantincreases in all of our core sports programs. Theseprograms include: basketball, flag football softball, and travel ball, and soccer. One program to highlightout of all the above is flag football due to it havingthe most participant participation in ITS programhistory. Although the ITS programs are increasing inparticipation, we still pride ourselves in providingquality programing to the people we serve

Finally, to the amazing youth athletes and coaches,ITS thanks you and congratulates you for your tirelessefforts. The leadership you show on the court andfield makes ITS and your tribes extremely proud.

Sincerely,Program Staff

In September 2002 Inter Tribal Sports, Inc. began to offer their first sports program, flag football, to SouthernCalifornia Native communities. The following year basketball and softball leagues were offered. All three sportswere well received by tribal youth and communities and became ITS’s core annual sports programs. In 2011, ITSoffered a soccer league and their first travel team “All-Star Travel Basketball.” The following year ITS started acheer program “DreamCatchers Cheer”. For a time, we also offered volleyball (2012-2014) and soft lacrosse(2014-2015) into our programs. Since the inception of ITS, thousands of Native American youth have participatedin over 1,300 ITS teams and counting.

In 2017, a total of 2,024 youth were registered in ITS sports programs, with 1098 individual youth athleteparticipants throughout the year. The ITS programs: basketball, flag football, softball, and soccer, are divided intofour age divisions: D-League (7 and under), C-League (11 and under), B-League (14 and under), and A-League (18and under). Travel ball determines their leagues after tryouts, while cheer and marathon kids allowed everyoneunder the age of 18 to participate.

Included in each sports program, ITS offers pre-season coaches and players camps designed to introduce gamefundamentals, coaches training, season expectations, rules, practice drills, nutrition education, season schedulesand equipment distribution. To close the core seasons, ITS hosts arguably one of the most exciting events towitness, the division championships for A, B, and C-Leagues, where athletes perform at their peak and winnersreceive a custom ITS trophy and bragging rights for the year. DreamCatchers Cheer

10 ITS - 2017 ANNUALREPORT

In 2016, ITS introduced the DreamCatchers Cheer program into our leagues. The cheer program is compromised of one large team, made up of different tribes and organizations from our service area, which is

unique in our programs.

To have a successful season, ITS relies on coaches and volunteers that are experienced in dance and cheer to help guide the young cheerleaders to perform spectacular routines. Our beloved mascot, Rez Dogg, is also

involved in the program as he helps the cheerleaders perform throughout their season. The season runs through our winter and spring sports seasons. Their performances include regular game days, opening days

and championships, with special appearances at other events, such as our annual golf tournament.

Marathon Kids

11

To expand our reach, ITS was proud to partner with the Marathon Kids, an organization who has transformed the lives of more than two million kids worldwide. ITS incorporated the Marathon Kids Pilot Program into our current

sports leagues by having the youth engage in structured physical activity on a regular basis through team practices and games.

At the end of the Marathon Kids Pilot Program, ITS had the opportunity to put on the 2017 Youth and Family Fun Run event on November 20th at Sherman Indian High School. This event had over 200 people present, which

was the largest group gathering in program history for this type of event.

The program and events under Marathon Kids allowed ITS to serve and reach more than 300 youth!

As one of the three pillars of enrichment identified in the ITS mission, Native culture is certainly what sets ITS apart from other youth service organizations. ITS is always seeking out new and innovative ways to authentically and

respectfully implement cultural aspects into our programs and services.

This year, the sports programs were able to incorporate bird songs and traditional dancing into our game days. Having these traditions incorporated into our sports programs, allows ITS to help provide a strong foundation in

Native American culture to our communities and youth.

Billy Mills is former track and field athlete who won a gold medal in the 10,000meter run at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, becoming the only person from the United States to win the Olympic goldin this event.
