Keynote Speech Title : A Smart Fluorescent Antenna For Wi-Fi Applications

Assoc. Professor Dr. Mohd Tarmizi Ali Faculty of Electrical Engineering Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM)

Malaysia [email protected]

Abstract The industrial potential of plasma technology is well known and excellent demonstrated in several processes of microwave technology, which incorporate some use of an ionized medium. In vast majority of approaches, the plasma, or ionized volume, simply replaced a solid conductor. Highly ionized plasma is essentially a good conductor, and therefore plasma filaments can serve as transmission line elements for guiding waves, or antenna surfaces for radiation. Plasma antenna is a kind of antenna that radiating an electromagnetic wave (EM) energy based on ionized gas instead of metallic conductor in antenna design. In this research work, the development using plasma medium as a conductor element instead of metal medium is investigated. Three new design antenna by using plasma concepts were

proposed; namely cylindrical monopole plasma antenna using electrode-less discharge tube, monopole plasma antenna using fluorescent tube and reconfigurable plasma antenna array. The research described in this project introduces the analysis of cylindrical monopole plasma antenna. The Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) technique is used in this experiment to generate the plasma. The monopole plasma antenna using fluorescent tube is designed at frequency 2.4 GHz that is aim for wireless application. The commercial fluorescent lamp is used as a plasma antenna in this research and integrated with the coupling technique. In the reconfigurable plasma antenna array, the behavior of the reconfigurable antenna array system using plasma medium has been investigated and discuss with respect to the beam shaping characteristics. The reconfigurable plasma antenna array is capable of scanning the radiation pattern over 360°. The simulated and measured results are presented and compared, to demonstrate the performance of the proposed antennas.

Wednesday, May 17, 11:00 - 13:00 D02_PIECT_S01: D02 - PIECT S01 Room: ROOM 1 - ARIMBAWA 1 Chairs: Lestari Margatama (Fakultas Teknologi Informasi Universitas Budi Luhur, Indonesia), Fitri Marisa (Widyagama Univerisity of Malang, Indonesia) 11:00 Portal of Tracer Study System Based on Multiple Platform and Social Network Approach to Improve Alumni Participation Fitri Marisa (Widyagama Univerisity of Malang, Indonesia); Indah Mumpuni (Pradnya Paramita School of Informatics Management and Computer, Indonesia) Background: Designing effective and acceptable media in collecting alumni data becomes one of the important tasks in higher education institution. Due to the fact, history of alumni data is used for various purposes such as to evaluate curriculum in higher education institutions and to map the characteristics of alumni performance in their works. To this goal, some methods have been proposed in the kinds of literature, such as a web-based questionnaire. However, these methods are still lacking alumni participation because it is not informative and not interactive enough to deliver two-ways information between the alumni and also technology coverage is a problem. The method also cannot guarantee the security aspect of the sent data. Method: as the solution, a multi-platform portal for tracer study based on social networking is proposed, as according to its concept, social networking covers three main criteria is: informative, security, and community. The performance of developed portal is compared to traditional methods, where the number of alumni participated toward these methods is measured. Conclusion: the experimental results show that the number of participants improves up to 130.76% on average, compared to the traditional methods. 11:15 Performance of Super Capacitor as Solar Energy Storage and Electric Tricycle's Power Source Maria Criselda B. Loyola, Marc Louise L. Buenaflor and John Aaron M. Comia (Malayan Colleges Laguna, Philippines) Recent developments and projects in the Philippines gave way for the introduction of electric tricycles (e-trikes) with lithium-ion batteries as its power source and which use the power grid for charging stations. This paper studied the workability of super capacitor as lone substitute to Li-ion batteries for electric tricycles and charging it by means of power from an alternative source that is solar panel. Specifically, this study is aimed to determine the power needed by super capacitor to fully charge, the time of its full charging, and the distance run by electric tricycle. The electric tricycle is assembled using electric bicycle mounted with a passenger side car. The solar panel is mounted on a support which houses charge controller and other accessories. The super capacitor used has a rating of 48 V, 165 F, modular type while the solar panel is rated 100 W. Various tests were conducted such as distance test and charging time test. From test results, the super capacitor employed in this work requires 68 W of solar panel power to become fully charged in more than 6 minutes. The electric tricycle with a fully-charged super capacitor can run up to 600 meters with driver and passenger load of not more than 118 kgs. A remarkable short average charging time, accounted by its high power density, validates that super capacitors are good storage medium for harvesting power from sporadic energy sources. On the other hand, the result for short distance travelled conveys that super capacitors are said to be suitable only for vehicle transportation requiring short distances such as point-to-point transport services.

11:30 WiFi Data Communication System Design for Wheeled Soccer Robot Controller Rizki Pamungkas (Budi Luhur University, Indonesia); Akhmad Musafa (Universitas Budi Luhur, Indonesia); Indra Riyanto(Fakultas Teknik Universitas Budi Luhur & Academic Quality Assurance Division, Universitas Budi Luhur, Indonesia) This paper presented the data communication systems between game controller and wheeled soccer robot using WiFi communication. The designed system consisted of a game software controller installed on PC, a network router connected to the PC via a network cable, ESP8266 module as data recipient and transmitter on the robots. The PC and ESP8266 module is connected through the router, PC game controller is used to send command data signals to ESP8266 module on the robot. The response from robots is processed on ArduinoMega2650 and transmitted to the PC controller. The designed system is expected to enable WiFi data communication on wheeled soccer robots and calculating the performance of WiFi communication by means of Quality of Service (QoS) as well as to compare data communication using WiFi and data communication using bluetooth with the parameters of response in the form of communication time, communication time difference, distance, and signal interference. 11:45 Web-based Geographic Information System for Electric Transmission Equipment Mapping Lestari Margatama and Silvia Al-Hikmah (Universitas Budi Luhur, Indonesia); Teguh Prakarsa (Budi Luhur University, Indonesia);January Dewanto (Universitas Budi Luhur, Indonesia); Indra Riyanto (Fakultas Teknik Universitas Budi Luhur & Academic Quality Assurance Division, Universitas Budi Luhur, Indonesia) In this globalization era, the development and use of the mapping has been very rapid in the last five years. So many people are now using GPS network system in their everyday lives. Geographic Information System is a tool to support information management related to mapping, analysis, and retrieval of geographic-referenced data. In the context of Electric Company, there is much information to support the business process concerning grid network and customer reach and services. These potentials are being optimized into web-based geographic information system and being test-implemented in one region of operation. 12:00 Design and Implementation of FPGA Based Bipolar Stepper Motor Controller for Linear Slide Application Chee Yuen Lam (Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Malaysia); Phaklen Ehkan (University Malaysia Perlis, Malaysia) Stepper motor is a common linear actuator in automation. This motor is used in the design of one axis automated cutter motion control with a linear slide. The cutter required a high precision motion and location control to avoid miss-cut condition. With the advantage of parallelism of FPGA, a precise stepper motor control signal is generated to drive the stepper motor. Concurrent logic circuit in FPGA calculated the distance and direction of motion in synchronize mode. Trapezoidal velocity profile and motion control are implemented using finite state machine (FSM) in FPGA. The distance resolution per step achieved in this study is 15.88µm for 8-microstep configuration. The FPGA stepper motor controller consumes only 1 % logic source on Altera DE2 FPGA board. 12:15 Development of a Microcontroller-Based Relaying System for Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems for Small Appliance Loads Kevin Dugay, Allan Paolo Santos and Jovoy Santos (Malayan Colleges Laguna, Philippines) The use of photovoltaic (PV) cells to convert solar irradiation is one of the most popular forms of renewable energy utilization and improvements in the existing technologies has been one of the focus of various research studies. The implementation of photovoltaics for the study mainly focused on the use of PV system as a grid-tied element which served as the primary power supply for small appliance loads during loaded operation with the grid providing the backup supply in the case that the PV system failed to provide sufficient power. Such was the case when (a) sunlight is not sufficient to energize the load, (b) the energy storage unit, which is the battery, had insufficient charge, or (c) the current generated by the PV modules is less than the current through the load. These factors were

monitored through the monitoring and control system elements of the design which also performed the necessary supply switching for the conditions of the system while also monitoring the energy consumed from the grid and energy delivered back to the grid. Through the system created, power generated by the PV modules was delivered to the load or fed to the grid, and load was shifted back to the grid, as necessary. The responses of the relay were the most suggestive of the effective implementation of the design. The responses recorded were of high accuracy and high precision in nature as tested for dependence through analysis of binary data by comparing the occurrence of expected outcome and actual observed outcome. 12:30 Performance Enhancement for LTE-A Networks Using Small Nodes Abid Yahya (Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) & University Malaysia Perlis, Botswana); Joseph Chuma (Botswana International University of Science and Technology, Botswana); Jaafar Adhab Aldhaibani (University of Information Technology and Communication (UoITC), Iraq & Motorola Company, Malaysia) Long Term Evolution- Advanced (LTE-A) is the succeeding version of LTE system meant to enhance capacity and coverage. Multi-hop relay is one of technologies supported by LTE-A, which aims to enhance the cell-edge capacity. Multi hop technologies are categorized into Fixed relay node (FRN) and Moving relay node (MRN). This paper proposes a system model which improves the capacity and throughput by employing moving and fixed relay coupled with half-duplex mode. MRN installed on top of vehicles, to improve capacity and throughput for vehicular users when the vehicles moves at high speed, while FRN deployed far from BS is to enhance coverage at cell edge. Amplify and forward (AF) and decode and forward (DF) protocols are used with these two types of relays. Furthermore, relay channel and amplification gain are derived in this paper to get on the maximum advantage via multi- hop technology. Simulation and analytical results show an increase in the throughput from 1.8Mbps to 3.7Mbps for 35 users after employing MRN on moving vehicle, furthermore this value improved to 4.1Mbps after employing MRN within a LTE-A cell coupled with FRNs deployed around BS according to the proposed location
