Establish Mathematics Goals to Focus Learning

Effective teaching of mathematics establishes clear goals for the mathematics that students are learning, situates goals within learning progressions, and uses the goals to guide instructional decisions.

Call them goals, objectives, generalizations, learning targets, or focus. The name is not as important as the intention. Learning targets are summaries of thoughts and overriding ideas that we want our students to know and understand before, during, and after a lesson. When writing your goals, look for these high leverage qualities summarized here:

1. Goals are clear and articulate the mathematics that students are learning within a single lesson, over multiple lessons, or throughout a unit.

2. Recognizing how the goals fit within the learning progression. (Check out our updated resource guides to help with vertical articulation!)

3. Focuses on goals that are attainable in short periods of time and are explicitly stated throughout the lesson to focus student work.

4. Establishes long-term goals separate from daily or short-term goals. 5. Goals guide planning and decision-making within and following instruction.

ELL Corner: Teaching ELLs How to Teach Themselves

1. Tell ELLs to take screenshots of your Powerpoint/Smartboard

presentations.

2. Using pictures and/or simple English or their first language,

have students annotate the directions on their paper as they are

read aloud to them, texts as they are read aloud (via their iPad),

and even lecture notes that you have printed out for them ahead

of time. This can be done by ALL students!

3. Teach students how to use online dictionaries, thesauruses,

etc…, since these often have sound pronunciations.

4. Remind students to use Google and show them how!

a. For Google Translate, they can use Siri or type in:

“How do you say ___ in Spanish” for an immediate

(though not perfect) verbal translation of something

they are reading that they can SAY, but can’t

understand.

b. They can also use google to type in a vocabulary word

and learn how to say it by clicking the volume symbol.

c. They can use Google Images to look up pictures of their vocabulary words.

5. Assign students to use ELL materials that already came with

your textbook adoption. Assign their reading in simpler versions

of your textbook if it’s available online.

6. Have students use rewordify.com to copy and paste, then

simplify any online texts!

ILEARN Information

Scoring of Math on ILEARN: There are some differences in

scoring between ISTEP and ILEARN for grades 3-8. While

assessing process on the math portion, the student must

arrive at the correct answer in order to earn both points. In

the past, the show your work step was given process credit

and a correct solution was given a content point. Now, the

work and answer may be scored together for a point and

further evidence or justification scored as the second point.

Two points are awarded for a full and complete response.

One point is given for a partial understanding, either a

correct solution or a correct explanation. No points are given

for a mere acquaintance, completely incorrect, or an

uninterpretable response. For more information on features

and scoring of the math ILEARN, check out the video from

the IDOE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhn0U8H-

GVM&feature=youtu.be

Scoring of ELA on ILEARN: The state has developed new

rubrics that are specific to the genre of writing. There are

separate rubrics for argumentative, informative, and

narrative writing. ISTEP had two rubrics that totaled 10

points. ILEARN will have three rubrics. Writing traits are

split into two 4 point rubrics: one for organization/purpose

and one for evidence/elaboartion. Scores for these two

rubrics are averaged together for one 4 point score. There is

also a 2 point convention rubric for a total score out of 6

points. The performance task will have mutliple passages

that will be mostly nonfiction. Students will use the

passages as sources for their writing, which is why the

passages will be mostly nonfiction. For more information on

the ELA performance task and writing rubrics, watch the

following video from the IDOE:

What's New in EDGE? (EACS High Ability Education)

Strategy of the Week: Strategy of the Week: Teaching Our Students about Growth Mindset It is important that we discuss growth mindset with our high ability students, so that they understand that no matter what natural ability they have, there is always room for growth. This is especially important when these students meet challenges in their education that they've never faced before. It is important that they know they can persevere through these challenges. Here are 2 sites with challenging puzzles to help build these skills: https://www.puzzles-to-print.com/rebus-puzzles/rebus-puzzles-page-1.shtml https://www.puzzles-to-print.com/math-puzzles/

EACS Staff Highlight!

Meet staff member...

SHARI HEGERFELD Data Coordinator

“I have been employed by EACS for 23 years -- 20 of them in my cur-rent position.

I am the system administrator for our student information system. I assist school staff members in mul-tiple areas in order to meet data entry requirements not only for our software and district policies, but

more importantly to meet state and federal data collection and reporting requirements.

I enjoy my job in assisting school/administrative staff members. We have great, hard-working people in our district. It is very re-warding being able to assist them with challenging data entry questions, report requests, and data files. Every day has a new puzzle!

THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO SHARI HEGERFELD!

Dream It. Do It.
