A Word from our Chairman
Forfar West End provide today’s opposition for this Super League game. I’d like to welcome both their players and officials to the Canniepairt. May I also extend a warm wel-come to our supporters and sincerely wish we all go home with a victory and three points.
Well, the long awaited relocation of the former Tayport Thistle changing facilities happened last Thursday. Apart from a couple of minor obstacles it basically went very well. The contractors we en-gaged to dismantle and reassemble the building certainly lived up to their reputa-tion, as everything moved like clockwork.
So the first of many stages has been achieved. Next stage will be a new roof, and with all going well this should be achieved by mid October. I’m hoping we can also make a start to clearing out the debris and make a start to getting the services into the building.
Well, our topsy turvy season continued with a very disappointing loss at Glenrothes last weekend. I take no pleasure in telling you that once again I ‘called it’. With 7 players missing it was one of the easier calls. My thoughts on that ? I’m saying noth-ing…
The game was of the poorest standard I’ve seen in a long time. That said, although we lost the game 2-0, we spurned 5 or 6 glorious chances to score. If only...If only the manager had a full squad at his disposal. That’s the sad part. I saw how much he was hurting after the game. He’s being badly let down.
A good number of months ago the club embarked on the SFA Quality Mark Scheme. We achieved the Standard Mark relatively quickly and together with Riverside SCS and Partancraig BC we’re moving ever closer to achieving the Community Club status. There will be a further meeting and a promotional photoshoot tomorrow af-ternoon. I’ll keep you updated on any further progress.
Today’s visitors seem to have been smitten with the same bug as we have. They won 6-0 against Glenrothes, only to be thumped 5-0 at Whitburn last weekend. Let’s hope theirs continues for anther game at least. On a serious note, I most certainly believe if the manager has close to a full squad available, then there is no doubt in my mind we can achieve a victory this afternoon
Enjoy the game...

Today’s Game McBookie.com Super League
Tayport v Forfar West End
A warm welcome to the Canniepairt to Forfar West End’s committee, players and supporters for this Super League encounter.
Could have been different
Had there not been a close season forced restructure of the East Region’s league set-up, today’s contestants would have been meeting in a Premier Division match rather than in the Super League. West End would have been relegated by finishing bottom of last season’s Super League whle Tayport finished 4th in the Premier League.
West End, under the astute management of player /boss Daryl McKenzie will be looking to take advantage of their reprieve to consolidate a Super League place this time round.
McKenzie has boosted his
pool in recent weeks by bringing in two teenagers on loan from Forfar Athletic, defender Sam Clark and midfielder Jack Allan (left) as well as Zak Wilson (right) from North End.
Allan and Wilson made their
league debuts in the 6-0 trouncing of Glenrothes two weeks ago with Clark debuting seven days later. All three didn’t have as cheery a Saturday night last week after losing 5-0 away to rapidly improving Whitburn.
Stakes are high
In common with all the teams in this division, Forfar WE will be acutely aware that with only 22 league games to
be played, a run of poor form can see a club quickly slip down the table. With the possibility 25% of the clubs being relegated (2 definitely and 1 in a play-off), every point is a prisoner. Both of today’s participants can ill afford to be dragged down the table, so the stakes are high.
Tayport’s form has been inconsistent and to a large extent this hasn’t been helped by being unable to field a settled side through injuries, unavailabilities and suspensions. Seven players were unavailable for selection last week but ‘Port boss Charlie King hopes Liversedge, Rollo, Suttie and Duffy are available for selection this week and as a result hopes that he and his assistant will not require to dust down their boots again this week.
From 1995 to 2001 Tayport and Forfar West End faced each other 14 times in Tayside league and cup matches.
West End failed to score a single goal in any of these matches while Tayport put 49 goals into the back of the West End net.

The up and down nature of Tayport’s season continues, with the club having contrasting results in their last two outings. At home to Fauldhouse, a fort-night ago, ‘Port ran out comfortable 4-1 winners.
In a blistering start to the game, the hosts scored twice in the opening quarter of an hour, to take control of the
contest. Dayle Robertson set up Conor Ireland for the opener, early on, then Rob-ertson himself made it 2-0, after good play by Josh Chalmers. The lead was extended early in the second half. Jamie Gill delivered a cross for Robertson, but his effort was kept out by ‘keeper Craig. Chris Liversedge (pictured), however, was on hand to crash home his first goal in Tayport colours, to make it 3-0. The impressive Liversedge scored again, with Robert-son again involved, as ‘Port effectively sealed victo-ry. ‘Hoose did pull one back, but finished the game with only ten men, as the hosts ran out worthy win-ners. There were high hopes heading into the Fife derby at Glenrothes, but a lack of availability hindered Charlie King’s selection. Indeed, King himself took the field, as a trialist, while assistant manager Daryn Smith appeared as a late substitute. During the ninety minutes, Tayport had plenty of chances to score, but poor finish-ing allowed home ‘keeper Jack Small to keep a clean sheet. At the other end, Jack Shaw conceded two first half goals, one to a Lee Celentano free kick and another to Conor Schiavone, who cut in from the right touchline and fired home from the edge of the area. Two down at the break, the Canniepairt men didn’t do enough to launch a come-back, so will be out to make amends this afternoon, when Forfar West End come to town, with more Super league points on the line. DUNMORE’S Match Reports
12
20 years ago It seemed a good idea at the time to go for a yomp as part of pre-season training. Manager Andy Sommer-ville had been convinced by fitness coach [the late] Dave Booker (centre front) (probably over a pint in the Taybridge Bar), that a yomp in the Angus hills to Braemar via Jock’s Road would be ideal preparation for the forthcoming season.
Andy (wisely) stayed behind as the players set off from Tayport in the club’s own team bus driven by Ross MacMillan and accompanied by chairman Eddie and vice chair Herx.
The players were dropped off in Glen Clova (pic left) in the charge of big Booker and coaches Jimmy Hunter and Ron Nicoll. The
arrangement was that the bus would pick them up in Braemar at a pre-arranged time.
Well, they got hopelessly lost in the hills. One hour late, two hours late … Ross, Eddie and Herx, waiting patiently at the end of Jock’s Road, were on the point of calling out the moun-tain rescue when a breathless Ron Nicoll arrived in a car driven by a smartly dressed guy in a kilt. He had been on his way to a wedding when he came across the hapless Tayport squad anxiously trying to find their bearings. They offered him £20 if he could take Ron to the planned bus rendezvous and then direct the bus to where the players could be picked up. He agreed and all ended well but, yes reader, you’re correct, taking a map with them might just have been a good idea!
Good preparation for the season, though, as the team started with 13 successive league victo-ries, conceding only one goal in the process, going on to win the Tayside Championship by the end of February.
Among those players in the pic with Booker and Ross MacMillan, are Paul Reilly, Barrie Gray, Keith Nicolson, Jimmy Hunter, Billy Coventry, Grant Paterson, Grant Buist, Grant Miller, Allan Ramsay and Steven Stewart.

A CHAT WITH CHARLIE
One of the few players who came out of Saturday's match at Glenrothes with credit was Josh Chalmers whom you switched to a defensive role when Luke had to come off early on. Since you signed Josh, he's shown he could probably do a decent job for you in a number of positions but where do you see him being most effective in a full strength line-up and why? Young Josh is a player I really like, good footballer, clever, composed. He will ideally play a central role giving us quality and creativity going forward. Unfortunately his shifts have just changed at work so he will miss a good few training sessions from October onwards. Luke O'Brien didn't last long before having to come off at the Warout. What's the extent of his injury? Young Luke we will get a look at training and see what the script is with that one. It is a hamstring injury and it's a shame, as he was just starting to put a little run of games together with consistency. With Luke coming off, that meant you were now without eight potential picks from your squad. McConnachie was suspended but of the others, what's the injury situation with Connor Gray and Kieran Conway? When are they likely to be back? Connor Gray will be back training shortly and Kieran the same. Although, again, Kieran is back to Uni in Edinburgh soon so that's a problem for us. You were also without Duffy, Rollo, Suttie and Liversedge. What caused their unavailability? Of the eight, who are likely to be in action today? Rollo, Duffy and Suttie were all away on holidays but are back this week and along with Chris who had a family wedding. They will all come back into contention for selection today. Gavin Sorley, who was unavailable v Fauldhouse, has been in good form between the sticks this season but, assuming Gavin was fit, you chose to stick with young Jack Shaw as your number one at Glenrothes. What was your thinking there? Jack quite simply deserved to play after a good show the week before. He has been playing with a quite a deep cut in his hand which is stitched up. Both goalies are available again today. After today, that will be us a third of the way through our Super League campaign. Early signs are that it could well be a case of who is going to be second, with Lochee United very much in pole position. Your thoughts on that. Regarding the way the league is panning out, yes it looks very much like Lochee are a strong choice to go all the way, however, plenty points to be won and lost throughout the campaign, teams that put a run of keeping the same team on the park will gain in consistency and we can only hope that we have enough in ourselves to do so.
One of the few players who came out of Saturday's match at Glenrothes with credit was Josh Chalmers

Tayport v Forfar West End The Previous Meetings
Tayport joined the Juniors in 1990, playing in Tayside Division 2 and ending that season as champions whilst at the same time Forfar West End were lifting the Division One title on goal difference from Downfield. So, it would be in August the following season before the clubs would meet for the first time, a 2-0 win for Tayport on Canniepairt in the annual season curtain raiser between the respective first and second division champions for the Herschell Charity Trophy. Billy Coventry and Jackie Devine were ‘Port’s scorers on that occa-sion. It would be the first of 56 competitive matches to date between the clubs.
The first league meeting came later that month, again at Tayport, when the sides drew 1-1, Thoms replying for Tayport after Gove had put the visitors ahead.

Forfar West End defender Gary Robertson’s had a 17 month spell at the Canniepairt.
Gary made his debut as substitute for Kevin Milne in a 3-0 home win over Newtongrange Star in a Premier League encounter in March 2012.
Gary was on from the start the following week and held down the left back spot for most of his time here, playing 42 games and scoring 2 goals.
It was something of a sur-prise when manager John McGlashan allowed Gary to move to Violet in August 2013
