Acting Principal’s Message This week on Tuesday evening we welcomed over 100 family members to our Information night for prospective parents for 2019. These parents mostly had preschool age children eligible (age-wise) to begin school in Foundation (Prep) next year.

These parents gained information about Kingsville Primary School and the overall enrolment process. They also had the opportunity to visit current Foundation rooms, meet with a number of staff, ask questions and just ‘be’ in an early years learning environment. From my point of view, it is as always a valuable night. We welcome in a large number of interested parents and community members and they share in the Kingsville story. Thank you to the other members of the school leadership team Peter Ritchie and Blagma Veljanoska, for their participation. Also, to current Foundation level teachers and a number of other staff who attended, your assistance and participation was very valuable. Kingsville Primary School Enrolment Process and Procedures Enrolling a sibling or students for 2019 where Kingsville is their closest neighbourhood school. Stage 1 – Collecting your enrolment pack. This can begin after the Queen’s Birthday long weekend: 11th June. Provide the office with a photo identification document (drivers licence) and a utilities statement which verifies that your residential address would indicate that Kingsville is your closest neighbourhood school. Collect the enrolment pack from the office and complete and collect the enrolment documents outlined on the checklist being: e.g.

enrolment form

acceptable use agreement for ITC form

permission to use student image form

immunization certificate (Medicare)

proof of birth - birth certificate Stage 2: Making an enrolment appointment Ring the school and make an appointment with a member of leadership, to enrol your child. Please note: all new families enrolling at Kingsville must make this appointment. Parents who already have a child at KPS and will be enrolling a sibling for 2019, may wish to make an appointment if there is relevant and important information to be discussed during the enrolment process. Stage 3: Enrolling your child at Kingsville Primary School This will begin the start of Term 3: 16th July Attend an enrolment meeting with a member of the leadership of the school. At your appointment you should bring all your paperwork completed to your best ability. Having your child at the enrolment meeting is required, this is an important rite of passage and they should participate in the process. Looking at enrolling a student where Kingsville is not your closest neighbourhood school. Stage 1: book in and attend a tour at Kingsville Primary School Stage 2: collect from the office an ‘expression of interest’ form and complete Stage 3: return the expression of interest form to the office. Please note: a decision on your application being successful will be made in Term 4 and the school will communicate with you.

Lunchtime Opportunities At Kingsville Primary, we recognise the importance of play in children’s lives. As a school we have worked hard to promote positive and quality play opportunities. We believe that play is at the very heart of our development of child initiated learning and that we have a responsibility to ensure that everyone has sufficient time and space to explore and participate in a range of play activities as part of their education and, in pursuit of developing the whole child.

The school playground has been designed to support the engagement of all students during lunchtime by providing a number of different zones or spaces that are used for different purposes.

This includes:

junior and senior play equipment for students to climb, hang and balance

artificial grassed oval for team sports

large cushions on the deck as a meeting place

sand pits

downball wall

quiet play area

stages and platforms for dancing and drama

grassed areas for sitting and lounging

kitchen garden

During lunchtimes, our students also have the opportunity to join one of many lunchtime clubs or activities on offer, that support the students in socialising with different groups and learning and enjoying different skills.

Developing these lunchtime activities is an ongoing process every year around the resources that are available, in particular human resources. Lunchtime activities and clubs offered give students the opportunity to engage and participate in activities that they enjoy and are passionate about, socialise with groups of multi-age students, ‘take a break’ from the playground or try something new. These places where like-minded children congregate, are a wonderful place to meet other who enjoy your interests and possibly lead to new friendships

Our teachers and support staff at Kingsville volunteer their lunchtimes to run clubs for the students as places where they can feel connected and part of a group that share similar interests. We are lucky at Kingsville Primary School to have such dedicated, enthusiastic and talented staff at our school, that are willing to share their time, skills and expertise with our students.

There are a number of activities and clubs available to students to participate in this term, including Art, Choir, ICT, Poetry, Yoga, Robotics, Craft, Table Tennis, Board Games, Library, Pom Pom making and Ukulele. These activities will be run by classroom teachers and conducted across the week, some open for specific levels of children others for anyone who is interested. In conjunction with these clubs, our grade 6 students provide a “service” to their peers by running lunch time activities in the yard for different cohorts of students. Students can participate in a drawing club at the buddy benches on a Monday or Wednesday. Also at the buddy bench is a board games group, this takes place on a Thursday. An athletics club is organised on the oval at recess time on a Thursday and lunch times on a Monday and Friday. And a karaoke club takes over the deck on Friday at lunchtime. These opportunities organised and run by our grade 6 students are wonderful examples of leadership and what it means to be an Internationally Minded person. Jeff McDonald, Assistant Principal

KPS 100th Anniversary, 2019 In August 2019, Kingsville Primary School will be celebrating its 100th year anniversary! Our school opened its doors on Friday 1st August 1919, and we are working on planning a range of celebrations to celebrate throughout 2019. One of the highlights planned for 2019 will be the development of a website to mark the 100th year anniversary of KPS. This website will celebrate the school’s history, the role the school plays in the community, the achievements and advancements it is proud of, and of course, the people. To commence this task, we need your help:

if you have any experience or interest in undertaking historical research, and would be willing to find documents, search for information, research, interview, fact-find and compile information related to KPS and its history to present day

if you have available any scanner that we could use If you are interested in joining the KPS Centenary Working Party to assist with the planning for events and special activities in the Centenary year, or can help with the above tasks please contact one of the following people for further information. Attendance EVERYDAY COUNTS, ABSENCES ADD UP!

SCHOOL IS BETTER WHEN YOU ARE HERE

LEARNING STARTS AT 9AM

ATTEND TODAY, AND ACHIEVE TOMORROW

LET US KNOW IF YOUR CHILD IS AWAY

Daily school attendance is the single most important factor for all children to succeed in education and to ensure they don’t fall behind both socially and developmentally. Children and young people who regularly attend school have better health and life outcomes. It is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age. Using Compass you can view up to the second attendance information for your child. To view your child’s attendance, click on the student profile link on the home page and click Attendance. There are a number of tabs you can choose from, including

Approvals – this tab provides a comprehensive list of attendance explanations for your child, from this tab you can also add absence notices (both past and future)

Unexplained – this tab provides a list of all unexplained absences from class, from this tab you can click to approve specific absences

Attendance summary – this includes a summary of attendance in each class Entering an absence From the Compass home screen (or from your child’s profile), click the ‘Add Parent Approval’ item. From the pop-up window,

- select the reason - enter a brief description of the absence - select the start and finish time - click the ‘Save’ button

Where possible, parent approvals should be entered prior to the absence occurring. Peter Ritchie, Assistant Principal

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge began a few weeks ago and Kingsville

Primary School is excited to be participating. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 7 September 2018. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. If you would like your child‘s name to appear on the Honour Roll, please sign the attached form and return it to your school. To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact Nicole Shirreff on 9314 5869 or by email [email protected] Nicole Shirreff, PRC Co-ordinator

Kingsville Italian Day 2018 Attenzione Tutti You might be mistaken for thinking you were transported to Italy on Wednesday when Kingsville transformed into green, white and red for Italian Day. Students participated in a

range of experiences that gave them some insights into Italian cultural life. Significant to its success is the passion and enthusiasm of the teachers, parents and community members who support the day and offer a variety of engaging experiences and activities. Grazie to you all! In the article below we have a detailed recount of the day, written by two grade six students Carla and Lucia (thanks girls). These special days always highlight the way our students interact and relate to each other, clearly demonstrating the attributes of Learner Profile. A special mention to our grade 6 students who took great responsibility in looking after the other children in their group, making a positive difference to the experience. Grazie Molto Sam Meddis, Italian Teacher

Italian day was educational and a really exciting day for all students from Foundations – Six. We had a terrific time trying new and different things and dressing up in Italian based costumes. It was so exiting to try some Italian activities because we don’t do it every day!

We participated in a range of experiences, which allowed us to increase our understanding of the Italian culture, language and history. The day began with caffe` and musica in the quiet play area and we were then welcomed by our school captains speaking fluent Italian! (Well done Ben and Prisha!) We then had a performance by one of our many talented parents, Antoinette Halloran an opera singer, who sang Quando M'en Vo. This was really beautiful and was a wonderful way to start the day! We thank her for giving us her time. We then went into multi-age groups which was a great way to interact with the younger students, where we participated in cooking, sport and art activities. Some of the activities we took part in were; making bruschetta, tiramisu, gondolas, pasta artwork, a Mt Vesuvius experiment and playing bocce, calcio (soccer) and waiter races. We even got to dance to some Italian songs including the Tarantella and Gioca Jouer.

We were also fortunate to watch a very entertaining show called Ristorante Mangiabanane. During the show we learnt words such as Capo (Chief), Dolce (Dessert) and Ristorante (Restaurant).

Thanks to the Friends of KPS for organising the delicious Gelati for us, it made the day extra special and we really appreciate all your hard work!

A big GRAZIE (thank you) to all the staff and parents who assisted in making this day possible. It was great to see the community and school come together to celebrate our love for learning Italian. We the Italian team for organising the day!

Student reflections…

FCW – Delilah: I loved the spaghetti races because I love a challenge, I was dressed up as a Gondoliere because I really loved the costume and so did my mum. 1SH – Poppy Giansiracusa: My highlight was pasta art because I did it at kinder and I loved it, I also loved the show because the waiter was saying weird things in the background that made me laugh

5DS - Chyanne Lumsden: My favourite costume that caught my eye was the spaghetti and pizza. My favourite food was bruschetta.

6JD – Carla Vallejos and Lucia Panetta: We absolutely loved the idea of having an Italian day to help our Italian minds to

grow, we thought it was great to have the responsibility of looking after the little students and we wish we could do it again.
