“Preserving and Perpetuating Old Time Fiddle Music”
Nov-Dec 2018

Presidents Message 2019 State Fiddle ContestI’ve been thinking about this quite a bit and given the firesituation here in the northstate and all of the people who wereburned out/evacuated/affected by first the Carr Fire and thenthe Camp Fire, it seems somehow inappropriate to be settingall of that aside, and discussing all things fiddle. I know thatall of us have been affected in some way—large or small—and have been helping in whatever ways we deemappropriate. So maybe the best thing we can do right now iscelebrate togetherness and our music as we spend time withfamily and friends for the next few weeks during this mostspecial season. For those of you who have been asking aboutplaces to donate, we at the Western Open have decided to besilent participants in Northstate Giving Tuesday onNovember 27, and request that any donations you may havewanted to make to us, that you consider giving to one of twolocal community foundations: North Valley CommunityFund (Camp Fire) and/or Shasta Community Fund (Carr Fire).
The 2018 Western Open was a success, and plans are alreadyunderway for the 2019 edition, October 22-24. The completeresults are on our website, www.WesternOpenFiddle.com.The CSOTFA Board has scheduled an additional Boardmeeting in January to check out our new location for2019—the Lodi Grape Festival Fairgrounds. At that meeting,we will finalize everything for the contest, and will be sureto get it out to everyone as quickly as possible. Justremember that we are one month later this year—April 12-13.We are grateful that Mark Hogan is taking the lead on thiscontest, and is enthusiastically proceeding. He will need allof our support so please be responsive to requests for help.
Tex and I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season, a veryMerry Christmas, and we pray for a peaceful, prosperousNew Year.

District 3Gayel Pitchford
Other than having our monthly jam we haven't doneanything exciting since the September contest, so nonews from District 3. I think we are all tired from thecontest!
District 1 has been deeply affected by the Camp Fire. Severalof our members lost their homes in the fire but they got outsafely. Many people lost their musical instruments andmusic.
Palermo Parade
The Fiddle Workshop folks played on the District 1 floatduring the annual Palermo Community Parade and Festivalon Saturday, September 15. The theme of the parade washonoring the veterans. The weather was nice and breezyenough to make it interesting, and a fun time was had by all.Somehow a motorcyclist got in front of our float and hethought it was a good idea to crank up his stereo as loud ashe could, drowning us out, but those are the things that makeparades memorable. Our collective grace and sense of humorkept us going.
The Oroville Veterans Day Parade was canceled due to thethreatening fire and heavy smoke.
The Frontier Christmas event (an annual Fiddlersperformance) has been canceled.
The Lake Oroville Visitors Center Facebook page states:“The devastating Camp Fire has impacted all of our lives. Some of our Parks staff have lost their homes, while someof our staff and volunteers have experienced debilitatingimpacts to their health due to the hazardous smoky airquality. We are sorry to announce that the closure of our parkand insufficient staffing means that we are not able to hostour annual Frontier Christmas Celebration (originallyscheduled for Saturday, December 1) this year. This 35-yeartradition will resume next year!”
Parade of Lights
This year’s theme will be Holidays Together (changed from“A Holiday Fairy Tale” in recognition of the Camp Fire). Our attendance at the annual Parade of Lights (throughHistoric Downtown Oroville on Saturday, December 8) isstill undecided since so many of our members whoparticipate in the parades are displaced because of the fire.
Holiday Potluck Our Christmas Dinner and Jam will beSunday, December 9. Bring a side dish or dessert and joinus. RSVP to Zeke - 530-589-0453.
We have had our fiddle workshops on the first and thirdMonday of the month, and are now taking our annualbreak in November and December, resuming mid-January. The fourth Sunday jams continue, with fineplaying and a well-rounded group of musicians showingup each time to share their music.

Our president, Eric Anderson, reported on our holidaydinner held Nov. 11. "The turnout for the dinner washardly anybody at first but around 1:30 more peopleshowed up! We had turkey, all the fixings anddesserts and it was an enjoyable afternoon. TheDistrict 5 fiddle kids (the Boggs children and OwenAnderson) played on stage and then we had ourregular jam after everyone ate. It being Veterans Day.we gave recognition to veterans and sang the servicesongs."
We also took nominations for 2019 officers and willsend out the ballots to members and announce resultsat our next session Dec. 9.

This has been a devastating time for the North State. Toomany of our members lost their homes in the Carr Fire thissummer. And now, the Camp Fire, which has affected somany including many of our local musicians. This is such asad time. However, the amazing community support is abright spot in these horrible disasters.
District 6 had a busy fall, full of performances, ending withthe Western Open. A great time was held by all. A hugethanks to Tex & Sharon, for their many years of commitmentfor this event.
We held our local elections for the upcoming Board ofDirectors and are just waiting for all the ballots to bereturned. We are focusing on building up District 6. We arepushing the "Benefits of Membership" by including a fulldescription with the mailed ballots and requiring all "OpenMic" performers at our Jams to be members. We aresupporting education of Old Time Fiddling and gearing Jamsand performances to highlight our younger musicians.Parents and all members are encouraged to attend our BoardMeetings. We want this organization to thrive again and feelthat "Youth" is the key to keeping it growing.
We have also changed our Jam format. We will still have aJam the first Sunday of each month with a 1:00 Jam, 2:00Open Mic, and finish off with a 3:00 Performance. However,we are changing the format on the 3rd Sunday to a CircleJam from 1:00-3:30. We have found that our members enjoythis so much and it is the best way to learn and encourageOld Time Fiddling' Tunes. We also will offer a StudentCircle Jam in the adjoining room so that we can support thebeginning fiddlers also.
We are getting ready for the Holidays. We will hold ourAnnual Christmas Party and Potluck dinner Sunday,December 16th at the Palo Cedro Community Center.Feasting starts @ 2:00 followed by a festive concert fromthe amazing "Alldrin Family".
Wishing all a wonderful Holiday Season.

District 7 has decided, with impetus from the Nationalchapter and assistance from the Julian Chamber ofCommerce, to resume the Julian Fiddle 'n' Pickin'Contest with the date is set for Saturday, 2019-May-25.We are also exploring a Memorial Day weekendshowcase festival to follow.
Our twice-monthly meetings have been restored tothree, courtesy the attentions of Avery Ellisman ofEncinitas. The 3rd-Sunday location is in North County, and is intended to expand participation to that locale. The venue is a co-op of District 7 and the Coffee &Company retail venue.
Local district members continue to entertain theSeniors' Luncheon program's crowd in Spring Valleyeach third Friday.
Our current photos includes committee volunteers, participating musicians and guests-at-large in both theLemon Grove and Rancho San Diego locations. Newparticipants show up from time to time, a result of bothword-of-mouth and online social media.

District 9's regular 4th Sunday jams continuewith fine music from many members, along withthat added bonus of a potluck lunch. In thepast two months we have welcomed severalnew members who both pick and play melodyon a number of fretted instruments.
At our district Officers and Directors meetingthis past month, we made plans for the holidayjam and party. Instead of a 4th Sunday jam inDecember, we will hold the holiday jam onSunday, 9 December. This will be at our usual, same venue, the Castro Valley UnitedMethodist Church. Officers and Directors alsoare looking to have our District partiallysponsor a division at the State Fiddle Contestin Lodi. The State Contest happens on April12-13, 2019. More details to follow, after theyhave been decided.
There will be a membership meeting at the4th Sunday November jam where we willfinalize nominations for officers for 2019.Ballots will be distributed and collected, andfinal tallies will be made and announced at thefinal membership meeting of the year. Thismeeting will occur toward the end of ourDecember holiday jam.
Play on, everyone!

Greetings from District 8:
As 2018 draws to a close, we have a lot to be thankful for. Ourbarbecue in September was a super time for all. The day couldn'thave been lovelier, and the generous abundance of music anddelicious food was amazing! In late September, three of ourmembers entered various contests at the 47th Annual Old-TimeFiddlers Convention in Santa Barbara. Our very own SethOstner and Charletta Erb earned top prize in the AdvancedTraditional Band Performance competition. And to boot, Sethplaced first in the Old-Time guitar category. Meanwhile, MaryZangerle placed third in the mandolin category -- right on!
Our annual Holiday/Installation Dinner takes place next week.We are looking forward to welcoming in another Board ofDirectors, as well as once again enjoying a turkey dinner, alongwith all the trimmings and loads of conversation, laughter andmusic! From our place to yours, here's wishing you the mostmerry and memmorable Holiday season ever.
See you next year!
