4th of July - Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. Psalms 33: 12 As the United States of America celebrates its 240th birthday, surely we recognize that our nation has many challenges in front of us. So many rightly feel that the underpinnings of this nation are being undermined and eroded. We are in an election year that seems ripe to divide us much more than it will unite us. We see the effects all around us of efforts to remove God from our public life in the name of Separation of Church and State.

At his first inauguration on April 30, 1789 President George Washington offered the fol-lowing prayer personally. “Almighty God, we make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy Holy protection, that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citi-zens to cultivate a spirit of obedience, and to entertain a Brotherly affection and love for one another as fellow citizens. May we be pleased to do justice, to love mercy, and to conduct ourselves in charity, humility and gentle temper of mind, which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without whose humble example we can never hope to be a happy nation. God grant us our supplication through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Let us not acquiesce to the call of some to eliminate God from our culture and nation. Without God, who has blessed our country with such abundance, we will be no nation at all. It is indeed the humble example of the Lord that we need to follow as individuals and a nation. A reminder that on Monday, July 4th, there will be one Mass at 9:00 a.m. in the Lower Basilica. There will be no Confessions or Adoration that day and, of course, the parish offices will be closed. Kolbe Relic Visit - Thanks to Michael Pise and all who assisted him as the chair for this event to make the visit of the Relic a special moment in the life of our parish during this Year of Mercy and our 125th Anniversary year as well. Special thanks to Fr. James McCurry who fit into his very full schedule time to come and join in our celebration. As usual, I understand that he gave an inspiring homily and talk on St. Maximilian. We had visitors here from near and far. All of the events surrounding the visit of the St. Maximilian’s Relic were well attended and well received. The Prayer Service that wel-comed the Relic, the Noon Mass, and movie were especially well attended. On Monday, June 19th we had the opportunity to take the Relic to Hampden County Jail. It was the one free evening during 10 days that the relic was in the area. Deacon Paul Mazzariello, who is the Chaplain at the jail, was very receptive and helpful in making the visit possible. The 23 men who attended the Mass, talk, and veneration of the Relic were very respectful and seemed very interested in the story of Father Kolbe’s life and the manner of his death. As the patron of prison-ers I think they could have a connection to him. The men also seemed genuinely appreciative that we took the time to bring the Relic to the jail. In this Year of Mercy as we recall the Corporal Works of Mercy, including visiting the impris-oned, I ask you to keep the men who participated that evening in your prayers. Where to go to Mass while on vacation? - A reminder that there is a good tool on the internet to find a Catholic Church and their Mass times while on vacation. Just go to masstimes.org and put in the zip code or City and State and a list of parishes and their Mass times will come up. It is probably a good idea to double check with a call to the parish to make sure that a change has not been made. How very important it is for us and our families that we keep our priorities in place and teach our children to do the same, especially when it might not be convenient. Our actions speak so much louder than our words. Summer Weekday Mass Schedule - A reminder that until August 22 there will be two weekday Masses at 6:30 a.m. and Noon. The 7:30 a.m. Mass will resume on Monday, August 22nd. Final Thoughts - I hope you are making plans to attend the Parish Family Mass and Picnic on Sunday, August 21st! See page 8 for more info. Please fill out the form at the bottom of the page so that the committee can plan accordingly. • While I was in Baltimore for Fr. Nick’s Ordination and Fr. Albert’s 25th anniversary there was just enough time to get to Camden Yards on Saturday evening. A comeback win for the Birds 8 - 6, after being down 4 - 0 early! The Orioles have thrived thus far at home (31-13), but are in the midst of playing 16 of 19 on the road and until mid-August they play 29 of 41 games on the road. Meanwhile the Red Sox are playing 18 of 21 games at home! Certainly this could be the make and break part of the schedule for both of them. Enjoy the Holiday. May God Bless America and may Ameri-ca give thanks to God. - Fr. Joe

Weekly Stewardship Report

“The harvest is rich,” Jesus tells the sev-enty-two in today’s Gospel, “but the workers are few.” The situation is the same today. How can I help with God’s harvest? Am I called into the field? Am I one who could provide food or shelter or wages to those who toil in the fields of the Lord?
