From the Pastor’s Desk

Our Lady of Sorrows, St. Louis, MO

The Fourth Sunday of Lent is known as “Laetare (Rejoice) Sunday,” expressing the Church's joy in anticipation of the Resurrection of our Lord. Today’s readings both remind us that it is God who gives us proper vision in body as well as in soul and instruct us that we should be constantly on our guard against spir-itual blindness. Scripture lessons summarized: By describing the anointing of David as the second king of Israel, the first reading, taken from the First Book of Samuel, illustrates how blind we are in our judgments and how much we need God’s help. In the second reading, St. Paul reminds the Ephesians of their new responsibility as children of light to live as children of the light, producing every kind of goodness and righteous-ness and truth.” In today’s Responsorial Psalm, (Ps 23), we celebrate the care of God, our Good Shepherd, who keeps us safe in the darkness of this world. Pre-senting the miracle of Jesus’ giving of sight to a man born blind, today’s Gospel teaches us the necessity of opening the eyes of our mind by Faith, and warns us that those who assume they see the truth are often blind, while those who acknowledge their blindness are given clear vision. In this episode, the most unlikely person, namely the beggar born blind, receives the light of Faith in Jesus, while the religion-oriented, law-educated Pharisees remain spiritually blind. To live as a Christian is to see, to have clear vision about God, about ourselves and about others. Our Lenten prayers and sacrifices should serve to heal our spiritual blind-ness so that we can look at others, see them as chil-

dren of God and love them as our own brothers and sisters saved by the death and Resurrection of Jesus. Life messages: #1 We need to allow Jesus to heal our spiritual blindness. We all have blind-spots -- in our marriag-es, our parenting, our work habits, and our personali-ties. We are often blind to the presence of the Triune God dwelling within us and fail to appreciate His pres-ence in others. Even practicing Christians can be blind to the poverty, injustice and pain around them. Let us remember, however, that Jesus wants to heal our blind-ness. We need to ask him to remove from us the root causes of our blindness: namely, self-centeredness, greed, anger, hatred, prejudice, jealousy, addiction to evil habits, and hardness of heart. Let us pray with the Scottish Bible scholar William Barclay, “God our Father, help us see Christ more clearly, love him more dearly and follow him more nearly.” #2 We need to get rid of cultural blindness. Our culture also has blind-spots. Often it is blind to things like selfless love, happiness, fidelity with true, commit-ted sexual love in marriage, and the value of human life from birth to natural death. Our culture has become anesthetized to the violence, the sexual innuendo, and the enormous suffering in the world around us. Let us counteract this cultural blindness by experiencing Jesus dwelling within us and within others through personal prayer, meditative reading of the Bible and a genuine Sacramental life.

Spiritual Communion of St. Alphonsus My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed

Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

Invitation to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Holy Thursday night

Dear Parishioners, As we anticipate the culmination of a blessed Lenten season in the Holy Week and Easter liturgies, please give consideration to participating in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament which happens after the Mass on Holy Thursday evening, April 9, 2020. This beautiful tradition of the Church commemorates Jesus’ agony in the garden the night before His passion and death. Our Adoration will be set up from approximately 9 p.m. to Midnight. Only the Rhodes Avenue door will re-main unlocked during this time. This will be your entrance and exit to the church during the Adoration. The organizations within our parish have been requested to commit to a 30-minute time between 9 p.m. and midnight to pray together as a group. This is a beautiful testimony by the women and men of our parish to put Christ first as their organization serves our parish in its unique capacity. Family members are encouraged to attend with their loved one during an organization time slot. Think what a powerful experience it will be for you and members of your family to gather in prayer before Jesus in the Eucharist. Your prayerful example and witness to your faith will be a light for others and lift all our hearts to the Father. May the Holy Spirit look with favor on Our Lady of Sorrows parish and its parishioners, Connie Stoffel , Liturgy Committee

Our Lady of Sorrows, St. Louis, MO

Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your com-mand, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the corona-virus, that we may experience your healing love. Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medi-cal care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbors from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no border. Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow. Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace. Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers, and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solu-tions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth. Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Jesus Christ, heal us.

Dear parents, bothers, sisters, children, and friends of OLS, I hope and pray you are all keeping fine and staying safe. It is personally hard for me to have Mass without you all here. Every day, Father Sigmund and myself will be celebrating mass “sine populo.” During the mass you all will be remembered in a special way. I am going to miss you all, especially on Sundays. Let us spend more time in personal prayer, rosary and stations of the cross. Let us not lose heart at this difficult time but trust more in his mercy and love. Pray to our blessed mother to protect each and every one of us. As Christ-followers, we need to remember that our God is a “refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble” (Ps. 46:1). God has not given us a spirit of fear. We should not panic. Our Heavenly Fa-ther is still the all-knowing, ever-present, omnipotent God. We also need to pray for all those who have been infected, those who will be, and for their families. We need to pray for God to deliver the world from this menace to human health and well-being. We need to remember and pray also for our doctors and nurses in a special way. Let us not forget to take necessary precautions. Listen to the medical experts. Be informed, sensitive, and wise in the way we approach this pandemic. Remember not to do any anything knowingly that would put anyone else at risk. Seek to help those who need help coping with the aftermath of having the virus or having been exposed to it. And during this whole process, as Christians we must always remember and have in our consciousness the Lord Jesus’ command to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31) and “to do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Luke 6:31). I remember you all in my prayers but know you are very much missed here and that we are united in his spirit. With love and prayers, Father Sebastian

It is with a heavy heart that we are canceling our Lenten fish fries for the rest of the season. We support the Archdiocese of STL and the CDC recommendations directive to cancel the OLS fish fry season. Thank you so much to our patrons for the support this year, we were hosting record num-bers. And many thanks to our volunteers and bakers that gave so much to make it so successful. But do not despair, once we are free of this virus we plan to host a big party and want you all to join us! Please stay safe and from OLS to you all we hold you in our thoughts and prayers.
