STUDENT IEP’S

By October 16th, student IEP’s will go home. If you have any questions regarding the contents, please contact your child’s teacher. The sheet indicating that you received it needs to be signed and returned as soon as possible. TERRY FOX RUN Thank you to all the students and teachers for their participation in the Terry Fox School Run. Many thanks to Ms. Sutej and Ms. Gaul for coordinating this event on behalf of OLS. LUNCH DROP-OFF If you are delivering a lunch, please label it clearly and leave it on the table outside the office. Do not drop-off the lunch in the office. SAFETY – WORTH REPEATING Our Play Yard Safety Practice remains the same. During morning drop-off, the only adults in the yard should be teachers on duty or parent volunteers. This allows for easier visibility and greater safety for all our students. All adults entering the school grounds must report to the office where we will be happy to assist you. HALLOWE’EN

Hallowe’en is a very exciting time for children, and we would like to embrace this excitement. There will be a parade of costumes for students on October 31st in the morning and parents are invited to watch the parade (weather permitting). We will also have a

Hallowe’en Dance for the entire school. Times are as follows:

Grade 1 & 2 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Grade JK/SK 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Grades 3 & 4 10:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. Grades 5 & 6 12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.

Grades 7 & 8 1:30 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. We do ask that students leave any toy weapons and masks that may be part of their costume at home. Just a gentle reminder that all costumes should be appropriate for a catholic school setting. Teachers may also send out more details with regards to specific activities in their classroom. HALLOWE’EN TREATS As Halloween approaches, we would like to remind you of our policy around distribution of treats and celebrations. As you are already aware, we have several students with allergies, who cannot participate in the consumption of edible treats. The risks associated with sharing treats are too severe. As such, we have asked parents not to bring in any edible treats, so as not to exclude anyone from celebrating. WASTE FREE/NUT FREE Thank you for your continued efforts in making our school a waste and nut-free environment. Many students are bringing their lunches in re-usable containers, cutting down on waste in our building. Please continue to send nut-free, healthy snacks. PARKING AT OLS

For those dropping off or picking up children at the front of the school, you are reminded to not infringe upon the fire route(s). Police have been and will continue to patrol the area for drivers not in compliance. ME TO WE Many thanks to Ms. Perisic and Ms. Smith for organizing a wonderful day and an equally great life experience for our student leaders. By all accounts the students were captivated with the experience. Be the change! OUR LADY OF SORROWS

CATHOLIC SCHOOL PARENT COUNCIL (CSPC) OLS CSPC Annual Fundraiser October is our annual Fundraiser month! Similar to previous years and in lieu of other fundraising initiatives, we are asking you and members of our school community to make a monetary donation to OLS CSPC. Our objective is to raise $30,000. Watch for forms and communication from your parent reps. The Fundraiser will launch on Oct 3rd. Please try to return the form by Oct 26th, or alternatively, go online to www.canadahelps.org to donate. You may also donate through your corporate charitable drives such as the United Way, by searching for our charity called "Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School Council". Thank you as always, for the wonderful support we have for this, year after year! OLS CSPC Fundraising Committee LOST AND FOUND Students and parents are reminded to check the lost and found on a continuous basis for any clothing or treasures that may have gone missing. The Lost and Found boxes are located at the base of the stairs going into the school gym. Contents of the lost and found will be cleared out the first week of each month, laundered and donated to charity. A friendly reminder to please clearly label all of the children’s belongings as this will ensure that they will be returned when found. For further enquiries, please contact Vida Groen in’t Woud at [email protected]. PIZZA LUNCH First and foremost, we wanted to thank so many parents for volunteering to help with our Pizza lunches. It makes our pizza lunches very successful! Please mark the following dates in your calendars for Pizza lunch: Wed. Oct 10th, Wed. Oct 24th, Wed. Nov 7th, Wed. Nov 21st, Wed. Dec 5th, and Wed Dec 19th. HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE

The Hospitality Committee requires volunteers for the many events that take place throughout the year which include The Christmas Concert, The Spring Concert, Parent Council Meetings, Staff Luncheon and Graduation. The duties involve organizing and preparing refreshments for the various events. If interested kindly contact Alexandra Pecoskie Carson at [email protected] or Vida Groen in’t Woud at [email protected].

LIBRARY CORNER

It has been a busy time in the library at OLS. The students in K-6 are enjoying book exchange every week and we are reading two very good novels. Primary grades are reading Mary Poppins and Junior grades are reading the sequel to Wonder, Auggie and Me. Both novels have the students engaged every week! Our Curriculum Night Loonie Book Sale was a huge success! We raised just over $200.00. All proceeds will go towards buying new picture books in the library. Thank you to all the families that donated and purchased books! Looking ahead…

We are having a Scholastic Bookfair during Parent-Teacher interviews and a Loonie Adult Book Sale. If possible, please donate one adult book for the sale and send it with your child to the library by November 1st. Thank you in advance for your support -J. DiMichele OUR LADY OF SORROWS PARISH The deadline for registration for the sacraments of First Confession, Frist Communion and Confirmation at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish is Oct 7th. Those requesting sacraments at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish should be registered parishioners, regularly pray with the community at the Sunday Eucharist and participate in the relevant aspects of the immediate preparation programs. If your family does not regularly attend Sunday Mass at OLS Church and/or is not officially registered with the parish, you are welcome to register at this time and begin attending regularly. All other families should, at their earliest convenience, contact the parish nearest their home or the parish they regularly attend for information on sacramental preparation. CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD Our Lady of Sorrows parish is pleased to offer a Children's Liturgy of the Word during the 9:30 am Sunday Mass. This ministry is intended for Children 4-10 years of age. Scripture will be shared in ways that children can easily understand. After the opening hymn, children will be invited to participate by walking to the parish hall with the Children's Liturgy of the Word Ministry leaders. They will return to their parents at the time of the offertory.

Safety Tips

Students remember why we have rules, they are to keep us safe! And when you do not follow the rules, you are no longer safe! Please follow these important Halloween Rules when you are “trick or treating”.

1) NEVER go into anyone’s house or car, no matter how well you know that person... unless your parent or trusted adult is with you. 2) NEVER eat any candy until your parents have checked it. 3) Costumes should be short enough & fit properly…so that you don’t trip or fall. 4) Watch out for cars! REMEMBER that it may be hard for drivers to see you. Also, help to make sure that you can be seen by using a flashlight, glow sticks or reflective tape. 5) Trick or treat in your own neighbourhood and NEVER take shortcuts through backyards, alleys, laneways or parks. 6) Stay away from lit pumpkins as it can be a fire hazard. 7) Trick or treat in a group, NEVER go alone. 8) ALWAYS trick or treat with a parent or trusted adult. 9) Use face paint or makeup instead of a mask. Masks make it hard to see where you are walking. 10) When you are trick or treating, never “zig zag” across the street. Walk up one side of the street, then walk down the other side of the street. Obey traffic signals. 11) ALWAYS walk on the sidewalk, NOT the street. 12) Only visit houses where the lights on. 13) ALWAYS be polite and say thank you.

Remember to follow these important rules, so that you stay safe!!

Have a fun & safe Halloween everyone!!

SAFETY RULES FOR KIDS

Y Wear costumes that are short enough

so that you do not trip. Y Decorate costumes with reflective tape.

Y Shoes should fit well so you don’t fall.

Y When you go out, carry a glow stick or

flashlight with new batteries. Y It can be hard to see out of a mask, so

use makeup or face paint instead. Y Trick or treat in groups with a trusted

adult – it’s safer and more fun. Y Carry a cellular phone with you, if

possible. Y Visit only houses with the lights on.

Y Don’t eat any treats unless they

are checked by a parent or the adult looking after you.

Always Remember! Y Be alert and aware of what’s

going on around you. Y Watch out for cars. Remember

that it may be hard for drivers to see you.

Y Stay on well lit streets and always

walk on the sidewalk. Y Walk, don’t run, and obey all

traffic signs. Y Never take shortcuts through

backyards, laneways or parks. Y Do not go into anyone’s car or

house, even if you know the person.

Y Stay away from lit pumpkins.

Y Do not approach pets or other

animals. Y Leave your ipod at home.

Y Be polite and say “thank you.”

PARENTS

Trick Or Treat Safety Tips

Trick or Treating is a lot of fun, but it can also be dangerous. Using safety tips and common sense can help make the evening enjoyable.

Remember the excitement at this time of year sometimes makes us all forget to be careful.

A parent or responsible adult should always take young children on their neighbourhood rounds.

Have your children carry a cell phone if possible. Notify police immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity.

Y Parents should always accompany children when they are trick or treating.

Y Make sure that your children wear

costumes that are bright and reflective, and short enough to prevent tripping.

Y Purchase flame resistant costumes, wigs,

and accessories. Y Make sure that emergency identification is

secured discreetly within your child’s Halloween costume.

Y It is best not to have your children wear

masks. Face paint is a safer alternative. Y Have children carry flashlights with new

batteries. Y Teach children their home phone number

and how to call 911 if there is an emergency or they become lost.

Y Avoid using candles in pumpkins.

Consider using battery powered lanterns or chemical light sticks.

Y Children should have a proper meal before

heading out to trick or treat. This will discourage them from eating treats before they are properly checked.

Y Watch out for traffic; motorists may have a

hard time seeing you. Y Wait until children are home before you

sort and check treats. A responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped, or suspicious items.

Y Make sure treats that can cause choking

are given only to children of appropriate age.

Y Plan your entire route before heading out

and make sure family members know it.

Remember to STOP, DROP and ROLL if your clothing catches fire:

STOP immediately,

DROP to the ground and cover your face,

ROLL over and over until the flames go out.

FUN ALTERNATIVES

Find special events to attend instead of house to house trick or treating.

Look for a community centre or

places that are hosting organized festivities.

Throw your own party.

Surveys will be sent home with the progress report the week of November 12th, with the only or oldest child in each family. Families are asked to complete one survey per family and submit it to the school principal by November 27, 2018. Should parents wish to have a translated version to assist with the completion of the English survey, they are asked to request a copy from the school principal or a special web page will be set up with translated versions of the survey. Translations will be available in the following languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Arabic, Filipino, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) Tamil, and Italian. To ensure that results reflect the school community, surveys will be coded to ensure reliability, as well as, surveys from 67% of all families in the school must be completed and returned in order for the results to be considered viable.
