Lanyon revealssmart cloud-based eventsmanagement
L ESS than 40% of event planners are creative thinkers de-spite 71% believing they have a creative approach to their
work, according to new research by London & Partners in part-nership with supplier directory MICEBOOK.com.
The research, which was developed to mark the launch ofthe London Convention Bureau’s Love the Event, Love the Ex-perience campaign, also reveals that while 53% of event pro-fessionals feel under pressure to deliver innovative events, lessthan a third of respondents say that risk-taking is encouragedby their organisation. Only one third said that they were al-lowed free time to think, and only 32 per cent agreed that cre-ative excellence is rewarded by their organisations.
More than 400 event planners were invited to find outwhether planning of events is dominated by rational left-brained or emotional right-brained thinkers. With under 40%of respondents shown to be right-brain thinkers, the studyhighlights that global event planners must push themselvesto embed creativity within their workplaces in order to deliverbold, dynamic events.
Tracy Halliwell, director of business tourism and majorevents at London & Partners, said: “Creativity and innovationare growing ever more important as clients demand event ac-tivations that set them apart from their competitors and deliverenduring memories for consumers. The experience itself isnow what drives the event, but it’s only by combining pioneer-ing ideas with concrete solutions that we can truly surpriseand delight.”
Respondents were tested using a 30-Second Brain Test de-vised by agency Sommer+Sommer. Its chief creative officer,Leonard Sommer, said: “An event without an extraordinary ex-perience certainly has less impact as memory systems in thebrain are not fully activated. To ensure an event leaves a lastingbrand impression, event planners need to incorporate uniqueemotional experiences, both to make them memorable and tohelp overarching messages resonate”.
Two-thirds of those surveyed blamed lack of time for ham-
pering creativity, with another 53 per cent blaming budget lim-itations. However, three-quarters of those surveyed believethat their team members are free to deliver creative ideas.
Chetan Shah, founder and CEO of MICEBOOK.com, said:“Whilst time-constraints and restricted budgets can sometimeshinder creativity, a balance is always needed between the cre-ative and the logical. Great teams bring together a mix of per-sonalities, approaches to work and creative or logical attributes.”
London & Partners Love the Event, Love the Experiencecampaign aims to encourage planners to embrace the emo-tional, creative aspects of event planning. Leonard Sommer, world known creative expert, will be on the London & Partnersstand at 15.00 this afternoon for networking, drinks and dis-cussion on creative thinking.

More powerful connections, morepurposeful meetings at IMEX 2017
Saudi Arabia reveals vision at IMEX THE Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is launching its first international
campaign to market the country as a destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions, at IMEX.
Marketing activity by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Na-tional Heritage in association with the Saudi Exhibition and Conven-tion Bureau will highlight that more than 600 first class hotels, convention and exhibition facilities are available across the country.
The marketing initiative is in line with Vision 2030, announced inApril 2016, setting out economic and social policies designed tomove the Kingdom’s economy away from its dependence on oil.Hosting business events is one of the focal points of the reforms, along with leisure and religious tourism, to generate revenue andemployment.
Under the National Transformation Plan, the centrepiece of Vision2030, the Saudi Commission for Tourism & National Heritage (SCTH)is investing almost SAR 26 billion (€6.3 billion) in initiatives.
Established nearly four years ago, the Saudi Exhibition and Con-vention Bureau was created with a mandate to develop the meetingsindustry.
Tariq A. Al-Essa, executive director of the Saudi Exhibition andConvention Bureau, said: “As the worldwide exhibition for incentivetravel, meetings and events, IMEX is the perfect place for us to meetthousands of influential event and meetings buyers face-to-face andto show them the opportunities in Saudi Arabia and many superb fa-cilities that we could offer them.”

Industry must demonstrateresilience in testing times
RECENT terrorist incidents are putting us allto the test, and the results will be of major
consequence not simply in the immediate futurebut for the long-term survival of our industry.
A quick look at the travel-related impacts ofglobal incidents suggests that business travel, and particularly travel related to meetings andconventions, were both the most resilient andthe first to recover from such setbacks. Cer-tainly this was the case in the aftermath of theglobal financial crisis, where association meet-ings in particular were least affected in termsof both attendance and cancellations. In fact,a case can be made that it was the continuedsupport from this sector that kept the industryalive during what was a very challenging time.
But the recent terrorist incidents representan even greater challenge in that they not onlyinvoke the fear factor but will inevitably result
in even greater security measures and poten-tially even a weakening of cross-border agree-ments that have facilitated travel in recentyears. Together, these will reduce travel incli-nations at a time when industry recovery wasonly just beginning to gain traction.
But as has been pointed out so many timesbefore, to succumb to the threat simply deliversthe kinds of wins those responsible are hopingfor – the disruption of global exchanges and
economic prosperity that have made the worlda better and more tolerant place. And as theclear leaders in this respect for so many years, this is a threat we must do all we can to resist.
So far, anecdotal evidence suggests the pat-tern has held: even in those areas hardest hit, there have been relatively few event cancella-tions even as leisure tourism has suffered sig-nificant impacts. Once again, the desire tomeet has outweighed the desire of others tokeep that from happening. Let’s keep it up. Wehave a legacy of leadership in driving travel re-covery and now more than ever that needs tobe maintained.

CONSULTANTS are used in just about everyindustry. Even presidential candidates rely
on the expertise of consultants to help themnavigate the tricky waters of an election cycle.Candidates, managers, and organisations relyon consultants because they are experts intheir field.
In today’s meetings industry, planners arebeing asked to do more with less, while at thesame time being asked to deliver a uniquemeeting experience for their attendees andsatisfy their meeting stakeholders. Conventionand visitors bureau (CVBs) are there to help, sowhy not let destination experts take some ofthe strain of meetings planning.
Here are seven ways CVBs offer consultativeadvice to meeting planners;
1. AA fresh perspective: Want to step outsidethe ordinary and offer events that areunique? The CVB consultant can provide afresh perspective on how to incorporate theunique aspects of the location into a pro-gramme.
2. EExpertise and specialised knowledge: Youdon’t need to spend time figuring out a des-tination’s logistics, hotel package, or trans-portation options. CVBs have specialisedknowledge in planning an effective pro-gramme and staying on budget.
3. BBest practices and proven methodology: CVBconsultants work with planners of every sizeand type, from a ten-person board meeting tolarge citywide events. Let their proven meth-ods and the best and most efficient ways ofachieving your meetings objectives guide you.
4. SStrategic partner: One of the most valu-able services CVB consultants offer is theirability to listen, assess, and understandwhat meeting planners are trying to ac-complish, and then match those goals tothe right solution.
5. AAnalytical horsepower: The CVB is the keysource in obtaining and sharing vital des-tination demand factors, historical occu-
pancy data, meeting history, and help tounderstand the overall economic value oftheir event.
6. AAdvocate and ally: As your ally and advocatein the destination, your CVB will promote thetotal value of a meeting to the community, leverage their community relationships, andhelp to solve any problems that may occurbefore and during a meeting.
7. CCost savings: These services provided bythe CVB are free for planners to use. CVBsare funded primarily through hotel occu-pancy taxes and/or assessments from or-ganisations vested in tourism.
