Wildcats Storylines ...THE GAUNTLET: The four-game stretch to open the 2019 season is one of the most difficult starts to the season in Wildcats’ history. Facing two defending state champions and three teams that have been ranked in MaxPreps Top 25 this season (Mentor, DeMatha, and Hoban), the Wild-cats emerged with a 2-2 record. Not too bad. FINALLY BACK AT HOME: To be away from Byers Field for the first four weeks of the season is unusual. September 28 is the latest date for the Wildcats’ first game of the year at Byers Field since 2010, when the Wild-cats didn’t play at Byers until October 2, an 18-7 loss to Mentor.

GENERAL GRIFFIN: The Wildcats’ field general at quarterback is Griffin Hanna. The senior signalcaller is the fulcrum of the Saint Ignatius offense. On the year, Hanna has 691 yards and 6 touchdowns through the air, along with a pair of rushing touchdowns.

COOK & CMIEL CHOPPING AND CARRYING: True to the motto of the wideouts this year (Chop Wood, Carry Water), Henry Cook and Connor Cmiel are working hard. The two seniors have a combined 24 catches for 395 yards and 4 touchdowns. Cook has been a good weapon in the short game at 11.5 yards per catch (ypc), while Cmiel has been a lethal option downfield, averaging 22.4 ypc.

BALANCED ATTACK: The Wildcats will look to employ a balanced ap-proach on Saturday against Football North. Coach Chuck Kyle ’69 wants to keep his defense rested and on the sideline as much as possible. Look for James Crosby and Jack Welcsh to eat yardage on the ground, with Griffin Hanna tossing the ball when the pass is open. On the year, the Wildcats have done a good job of remaining balanced, with 103 runs and 99 passes.

THE BIG UGLIES: The Wildcats’ linemen have played well this year, on both sides of the ball. Look no further than the sacks stat – Saint Igna-tius has sacked the opposing quarterback nine times, while the Wildcats’ offensive line has surrendered just four. Nick Schwitzgebel and Tony Georges has anchored the line as veteran tackles on offense. On defense, Bennett Adler, Max Watters, and Rico Levert will be critical to keeping up the heat on opposing offenses.

VELOTTA’S TIME TO SHINE: Junior Nick Velotta has enjoyed a nice sea-son for the Cats. Mixing in at linebacker, Velotta has recorded 10.5 tack-les, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1 pass breakup, and 1 forced fumble. This week, Velotta will start at safety. Look for him to help especially with the run.

NO FLY ZONE: While opponents have enjoyed success on the ground, opposing QBs have not done much through the air. The Wildcats have limited foes to 536 yards and 2 touchdowns. Two-way players Connor Cmiel and Jack Welcsh have drawn plenty of praise, but unsung heroes such as Erik Daugenti, Merick Hartley, and Charlie Kinzel have all excelled, as well. The secondary is off to a good start this year.

CAPTAINS: The four captains for the 2019 season are #10 Griffin Hanna, #34 Jack Welcsh, #44 Michael McNamara, and #71 Nick Schwitzgebel.

THE MATCHUP ABOUT THE WILDCATS ...

Entering week five of the 1991 season, the Wildcats were rolling. The men of Chuck Kyle ’69 had won four straight games to start the season, all by double digits. A tough foe awaited the Wild-cats on September 28, 1991 – the Lake Catholic Cougars. The two teams matchup up at Lakewood Stadium, early in magi-cal seasons for both programs. In a ferocious battle between West side and East side Catholic powers, the Wildcats emerged with a 20-17 victory. Mike Sako played a large role in the victory for the Wildcats. The tough running back powered in two touchdowns for the men of Ohio City. Bill Peters scored the third touchdown, a 52-yard catch and run. But Lake Catholic was not with-out star power. Future NFL star wideout Joe Jurevicius kept the Cougars close the whole way. In the end, a penalty played a big role in the outcome. “It was one of those games where whoever had the ball last was going to win it,” recounted former Lake coach John Gib-bons in 2016 to the News-Herald. “The one thing I remember is we scored a touchdown and were called for illegal formation or something. We ended up getting just a field goal.” The Cougars overcame the loss to win the first of back-to-back Division III State Championships. Meanwhile, the Cats won the first of five straight Division 1 crowns.

Learning about Football North ...ABOUT FOOTBALL NORTH: Football North is a program located in Mississauga, a suburb of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. The team’s students attend Clarkson Secondary School. The program’s goals are to help its players earn NCAA football scholarships and compete on a level with top programs in the United States. Football North is in its third season with Larry Jusdanis, a former quarterback in the Canadian Football League.

TOUGH FINISHES: Two of Football North’s games this season have been cut short. Lightning ended the game vs. Mentor in the third quarter with the score at 28-15. An on-field fight led the referees to end Football North’s game against Lorain. An on-field altercation be-tween the two teams started after a Lorain 2-point conversion, lead-ing to ejections for both teams. While Lorain will miss a few players this week, Football North is not an OHSAA team and thus not bound to hold out any players for their role in last week’s brouhaha.

QUINCY QUARTERBACK: Quincy Vaughn is Football North’s leader on offense. At 6’4, 225 pounds, Vaughn is a pro-style quarterback who can move. Ranked as the No. 3 prospect in Ontario, Vaughn has a strong arm and can get the ball to wideouts in all parts of the field. The senior will be key for the visitors on Saturday.

MARTIN MAGIC: Omarion Martin is the bellcow of the Football North attack. The stud running back is similar in stature and style to Men-tor’s Brian Trobel. Martin scored the first touchdown of the game against the Cardinals a couple of weeks ago. A strong runner, Martin knows how to use his big offensive linemen until he finds a crease to run through. Martin only got 3 carries last season against the Wild-cats – he’ll likely surpass that number this week.

THE BIG BOYS: Justin Stevens leads a large offensive line for Foot-ball North. At 6’6, 285 pounds, Stevens is a towering foe for an op-posing defensive lineman. The Eastern Michigan commit will play a critical role in opening running lanes for Martin and keeping Vaughn clean in the pocket. On defense, end Reignings Awah will be the leader. The 6’4, 235-pound Kent State commit will be key to stuffing the Wildcats’ run game and getting after Griffin Hanna.

DEFENSIVE SCHEMES: This game marks the third straight year the Wildcats have faced Football North, so the Saint Ignatius coaching staff has plenty of film to review this week. Over the last few sea-sons, Football North’s defense mostly operates in a 4-man front, a scheme the Wildcats have seen plenty. But the Wildcats are also preparing for a 3-man front, which Football North has used this year to keep opponents on guard.

THE BLITZ: Football North’s defense loves to blitz. Watch for the visitors to use creative packages and looks to disguise blitzes.

MAN-T0-MAN: Football North primarily uses man-to-man coverage. QB Griffin Hanna will need to cycle through his reads quickly to find the open man in single coverage.

DL MAX WATTERS ’20The senior has missed time due to injury this year, but he returned against DeMatha to make one tackle. Mov-ing to defensive end for Week 5, Watters will be expected to get after the quarter-back and help to stuff the run game. The 6’2, 250-pound lineman brings a hard-working attitude to the line, hoping to make a big impact against a size-able Football North OL.

Jake Lang will be a key member of the offense this week and mov-ing forward. Lang has hauled in 4 catches for 67 yards so far this sea-son, also assisting plen-ty in run blocking. Lang will be a key target in the passing game for QB Griffin Hanna, along with an important men-tor for junior tight end Nick Lamirand. Look for Lang to step up as needed.

Home, sweet home.At long last, the Saint Ignatius varsity football team

will have a home game. After four weeks on the road, the Wildcats will host Football North on Saturday at Byers Field at 5 pm. The Wildcats emerged from the with a 2-2 record

from the gauntlet against Loyola, Hoban, Mentor, and DeMatha, one of the toughest stretches in program history. Two of the four teams won state champion-ships, and three of the four have been ranked in the MaxPreps Top 25 this season.Football North will also present a challenge. Lo-

cated in Mississauga (a suburb of Toronto in On-tario), the program draws students from Clarkson Secondary School. Under coach Larry Jusdanis, former quarterback in the Canadian Football League, Football North has a 2-2 mark. The men of the North have proved they can play with the big boys, beating Lorain and giving Mentor a good game.Football North’s last game against Lorain was

ended early after an on-field altercation between the two teams. Since Football North is not an OHSAA school, they will not be forced to hold any players out because of their roles in the brouhaha. Regardless, the Wildcats are expecting a good

game from Football North. The visitors can score points and have a solid defense. SAINT IGNATIUS OFFENSE VS. FOOTBALL NORTH

DEFENSELast week, the Wildcats’ offense failed to gain trac-

tion against DeMatha. This week, Coach Chuck Kyle ’69 wants his defense to score and possess the ball as much as possible. The Wildcats plan to utilize a balanced approach,

establishing the run with backs Jack Welcsh and James Crosby, whie giving Griffin Hanna the freedom to fire the ball downfield. At all costs, the Wildcats will be looking to avoid

3-and-outs. Giving the defense time to rest will be important, as Football North has a solid offense that can move the ball. Connor Cmiel and Henry Cook will be a key part

of that plan. Cmiel has been a key downfield threat, averaging 22.4 yards per catch, while Cook has become a great short option. Tight end Jake Lang will also play an important role in the passing game. Look for junior Nick Lamirand to play a role as both a pass-catching and run-blocking tight end, too.Football North will counter with a flexible defense.

The Canadians will mostly utilize a 4-man front, a scheme they used in each of the last two matchups against the Wildcats. But Saint Ignatius is also pre-paring to face 3-man fronts, which Football North has unveiled with some success this season.

However many linemen Football North uses, watch for the blitz on Saturday. Coach Jusdanis likes to call for blitzes on defense. Football North has plenty of looks to confuse opposing offenses, so the Saint Ignatius offensive line will need to be watchful before the snap.On most passes, Football North will employ a

man coverage scheme. Playing man-to-man forces the quarterback to have smart pre-snap reads to help him predict which receiver to look for first, second, and third. The Wildcats struggled with man coverage last

week against DeMatha. This week, look for the Wildcats to find creative ways to get receivers open. If Griffin Hanna has time in the pocket, the Wildcats’ passing game could thrive. SAINT IGNATIUS DEFENSE VS. FOOTBALL

NORTH OFFENSEThe strength of this Football North team is its

offense.Quincy Vaughn leads a strong offense with quick-

strike ability. The Old Dominian commit is a strong quarterback at 6’4, 225. The pro-style signalcaller has a live arm to get the ball to his wideouts. Football North likes to play a spread offense and get the ball to its playmakers, especially wideouts Chey Charles, Nathan Demontagnac, and Brayden Misseri. Omarion Martin is the bellcow at running back.

He’s been compared to Brian Trobel of Mentor, particularly after Martin scored the opening touch-down a few weeks ago vs. the Cardinals. Martin knows how to hide behind his offensive linemen while waiting for an opening, and he has the speed to hit the crease quickly. Justin Stevens, a 6’6, 285-pound Eastern Michigan commit, leads a large offensive line. For the Wildcats, look for a few changes on de-

fense. Nick Velotta will move back to safety and Aidan Hubbard will shift back to linebacker. Max Watters will play defensive end, while Rico Levert will anchor things at nose tackle.Overall, the Wildcats’ front six need to penetrate

into the backfield to limit Martin, and the second-ary has to prevent any deep plays from Vaughn to one of his many wideouts. SPECIAL TEAMSDeclan Mangan and Rory McConville will handle

the kicking duties for the Wildcats, as per usual. The Cats have been working hard on kickoff re-

turn coverage in practice to stop Football North’s speedy return men.Zachery Frustaglio will take care of kicking and

punting for Football North.

DEMATHA RECAP

On a blistering hot Maryland Saturday, the Saint Igna-tius Wildcats experienced an unusual defeat. When they play in one-sided affairs, the Wildcats are

typically the team enjoying a running clock in the sec-ond half after showcasing their considerable talents in the early goings of the game. That’s been typical in the Chuck Kyle ’69 era. But, as the old saying goes, ‘The sun don’t shine on

the same dog’s [rear-end] every day.’The Wildcats were defeated by DeMatha Catholic on

Saturday, 42-0, at the Prince George’s Athletic & Learn-ing Complex nearby FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.A combination of factors contributed to the lopsided

defeat. First and foremost, the Stags are an extremely talented team. DeMatha is a loaded squad filled to the brim with Division I prospects. Athletes flock from far and wide from the surrounding area to play football, basketball, and other sports at DeMatha. While the Stags lost to St. John Bosco (CA) to start the season, this team deserves to be nationally ranked with all of its talent.Another factor was the heat. While DeMatha plays

frequently in hot conditions, the Wildcats are not ac-customed to the Maryland heat. With temperatures reaching the high 80s and the heat index touching the mid-to-high 90s, the Wildcats had trouble keeping up with the DeMatha speed under the midday sun.Traveling six hours by bus also will take a lot out of

you. For any high school team, that’s a challenge. But all excuses aside, DeMatha was the better, more

talented team. The Stags showed their speed and talent from the

very first play from scrimmage. South Carolina commit MarShawn Lloyd exploited an opening in the middle of the Saint Ignatius defense on the first play, dashing 75 yards for a touchdown. Before many took their seats, the Wildcats trailed, 7-0.An inopportune turnover then granted DeMatha fine

field position on its next drive. The Stags used the run game to get to the end zone for a second time, finish-ing off the drive with a short run to advance the lead to 14-0.On its next drive, the Wildcats started to march down

the field. Jack Welcsh aided the offense with the run, with Griffin Hanna adding a couple of nice passes. But the drive stalled on fourth down at the DeMatha 37-yard line. Declan Mangan attempted a 54-yard field goal, but the wind knocked it off course. The Saint Ignatius defense made adjustments on De-

Matha’s ensuing possession. The Wildcats stopped the Stags short and managed to get the ball back with-out any damage. Again, the Wildcats’ offense started to drive down the field. James Crosby helped to pick

up some yardage on one of the final plays of the first quarter.Unfortunately, the drive stalled again. On a 49-yard

field goal attempt, the wind again played a role in a missed field goal. The teams traded punts before DeMatha put the

game out of reach with a 21-0 run to end the half. The deluge started with another back-breaking run, this time for 64 yards. The storm continued with a 41-yard dash on a run play through the middle of the defense. Then DeMatha scored one last time to end the half, on a picture-perfect passing strike from quarterback Mal-akai Anthony, a Division I college prospect. At half, the Wildcats trailed, 35-0.The Wildcats continued to fight in the second half.

But with a running clock and a pair of turnovers, the Wildcats could not get within striking distance to score. DeMatha added another touchdown on a fumble recovery in the end zone. The game ended with a 42-0 defeat for the Wildcats,

not an easy day.Whether or not you take a glass-half-full approach,

the Wildcats are 2-2. After facing a gauntlet of teams to start the season, a 2-2 record is nothing to sneeze at. The Wildcats have defeated two defending state champs in Loyola Academy and Archbishop Hoban. Take away an inopportune holding call or the penalty on a called-back kickoff return TD vs. Mentor, and the Wildcats might be 3-1. And mind you, all four of the first games have been on the road. The Wildcats have traveled 1,500 miles in four weeks.Plenty of season remains for the Wildcats. The team

has an opportunity on Saturday vs. Clarkson Football North (Canada) at Byers Field to regroup and get back on track for the stretch run. Anything is possible for the Wildcats – nothing is yet lost.As Coach Kyle likes to say, don’t lose faith.

2019 marks the 92nd season that football has been played on this location; now known as Byers Field atRobert M. Boulton Stadium. In 1921, the cities of Parma and Parma Heights opened the first high school for their residents on a site just outside the east bleachers. Seven years later, the apple orchard and grass field located behind the new school was converted into the athletic field with the gridiron laid out in a north-south alignment, just as it is today. Recently, renovations have been completed on the facility. In the last decade, a new lighting system was in-stalled; bleacher improvements (including the installa-tion of handrails) were completed along with renova-tions to the lockerrooms, restrooms and concession areas. Other improvements include the installation of a video board at the north end of the stadium - it is one of the largest video boards in use at a high school facil-ity the state. The pressbox, which has been upgraded in the past five seasons with a new working media area and new windows, seats 30 journalists and broadcasters. New field turf was installed for the 2012 season. In the last two seasons, the stadium has also had handi-cap seating added to both sets of grandstands, includ-ing 46 wheelchair and companion seats on the home side of the stadium. The Parma City Schools invested nearly $1.2 million into the facilty during the summer of 2014, including a new parking lot on the south end of the Stadium and the full replacement of the parking lot on the east side of the stadium, under the Press Box. The Wildcats have played at least one game at Byers Field in 34 of the last 36 years (seasons without games - 1984 and 1991)

victory over Canadian foes

PARMA – The Wildcats used all kinds of ways to score – rushing touchdowns, passing strikes, two safeties, two field goals, and extra points.

On offense, quarterback Patrick Delahunty and running back Jack Welcsh led the way. Delahunty completed 12-of-20 passes for 183 yards and 2 touchdowns. Welcsh ran for 94 yards on 18 carries and scored twice. On defense, Tommy Eichenberg had 3.5 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Welcsh led the way down the field and completed an 8-play, 55-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown. Rory Mc-Conville made the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 3:53 left in the first quarter.

On the first play of the second quarter, the offensive line gave Delahunty time to find Jack Kennedy for a 54-yard score. McConville converted the PAT for a 14-0 lead.

After a Football North punt, the Wildcats scored follow-ing a short march. McConville made a 39-yard field goal to extend the lead to 17-0 at the 8:16 mark. The squads traded punts. On Football North’s fifth drive of the day, the Wildcats’ defense earned points. Kyle Sullivan started with a sack. On the next play, Football North’s quarter-back was sacked by Connor Francz, in the end zone for two points.

Now leading 19-0, the Wildcats’ offense marched down the field led by Welcsh and Connor Cmiel. With two minutes left, the Wildcats had the ball at the 1-yard line on first down. Football North stood strong against the run for three plays but Delahunty found Jake Lang for a 1-yard strike on fourth down. McConville’s extra point made the score 26-0 with 1:28 remaining in the half. Thanks to the defense, which limited Football North to negative-3 yards in the first half, Saint Ignatius had one more chance to score. Delahunty drove the Cats into the red zone where McConville made a 35-yard field goal to make the score 29-0 at halftime.

Football North’s Brendon Barrow ran 52-yards for a score. After they stopped the Wildcats’ offense, Pat Otter pinned the visitors at their own 1-yard line with a 50-yard punt. Football North could not generate any offense, and decided to take a safety instead of attempting a punt. The two points advanced the Wildcats’ lead to 31-7 with nine minutes left in the third. On the ensuing kick, Cmiel gave the Wildcats great field position. Less than two minutes later, Welcsh scored from one yard out, making the score to 38-7 Wildcats after a McConville PAT. Fol-lowing a failed Football North drive, the Wildcats killed some clock. Griffin Hanna sent the squad into the red zone with a pass to Cmiel. Floyd finished the drive with a 9-yard run with 9:33 left in the fourth. Football North scored in a 10-play drive for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, making the final score 45-13.
