2019 Men’s Lacrosse

The High Point University men’s lacrosse team looks to continue the success of the 2018 campaign in 2019. The Panthers ended their 2018 campaign with a share of the Southern Conference (SoCon) Regular Season Title.

Head coach Jon Torpey feels this team has the returning talent and depth to stay atop the SoCon this season. The seventh-year head coach is pleased with the crop of returners and incomers HPU has for the 2019 campaign.

“We’re excited,” head coach Jon Torpey said. “If you look at where we were last year at this time, I think we were very freshmen and sophomore heavy, still trying to figure out what spots to fill really all over the field. Last year if you look at our team, the only spot that was completely solidified at this point in the season was Timmy Troutner in the goal.

After having an extremely young team last year, Torpey is excited about the returning core he has solidified for the upcoming season after a season to learn what he wants offen-sively and defensively. HPU will return six of its ten starters from last season.

“We played a fair amount of younger guys last year, those younger guys got some really valuable playing experience,” Topey explained. “They really took to learning our system and what we wanted to do both offensively and defensively. I feel like this year we’re a little bit further ahead in terms of personnel, in terms of schemes and some of the things we’ve been able to put in. Like most coaches in Division I, I’m pretty happy right now. We are moving in a really positive direction. I love our leadership. I think the guys on the team have been just fantastic and have bought in.”

The Panthers will face a difficult noncon-ference schedule. HPU will open the season

against St. Bonaventure in the first game in the school’s program history. High Point will then travel to 2018 National Runner-up and No. 2 Duke. The Purple & White will also travel to No. 6 Virginia after playing Drexel. The Pan-thers will then bring St. John’s to Vert Stadium, before welcoming 2018 NCAA Tournament team Robert Morris to High Point, N.C. HPU will end nonconference play against UMBC. The Panthers will open SoCon play with a two-game road trip at VMI and Jacksonville. Match-ups with Furman and Air Force open home conference play for HPU. High Point will then travel to Mercer and Bellarmine, before host-ing defending SoCon Tournament Champion Richmond to close the season.

GoaliesThe Purple & White return senior goalie

Tim Troutner Jr. and redshirt-sophomore Grif-fin Basile in the cage. The Panthers add fresh-men Antionio Arcona and Raffaele Bagnato to round out the quartet.

“I think it starts with Timmy Troutner in the goal,” Torpey said. “I’ll be the first one to say I think he’s the best goalie in the country. I think what he does for us in terms of saving the ball, what he does in terms of running our defense, what he does in terms of getting the guys in front of him in play at an incredibly high level and give him shots that he wants to see. His clearing game and just his out of the cage presence is as good, if not better than, anyone I’ve had the opportunity to coach.”

The senior keeper ranked second in the SoCon in saves percentage at .531 and third in saves per game at 10.57. Troutner was also second on the team in ground balls at 37. The Annapolis, Md. native set a program-record with 22 saves against Jacksonville in the So-Con Tournament on May 3, 2018. He saved 10 or more goals on five separate occasions last season. Troutner was selected to the 2019 Pre-season All-SoCon team. He has compiled a 6-7 career record.

Behind him High Point returns Basile after he sat out last season due to an injury. Arcona comes to HPU after completing his prep career at Norfolk Academy, while Bagnato comes via Charlotte Catholic.

Defense After having a young unit last season,

the Panthers return some experience in their long-stick midfielders and defenders. Torpey is excited about the depth and versatility of the newcomers and returners in the unit.

“In terms of defense, Nick Walsh, Clayton Krol and Chris Price have done a really good job of just learning our defenses,” Torpey said. “All those guys have good seasoning under their belt with two sophomores and one ju-nior. Then our poles, we have Griff Caliguiri, a senior for us, has really stepped up on the wings. Luke Cappetto, a junior, has done a great job of learning everything we do. Nate Carter adds a ton of energy and is super ag-gressive, which is the way we want to play on that end of the field.”

Junior Nick Walsh leads the returning de-fenders with 24 groundballs and six caused turnovers last season. Sophomore Clayton Krol added 20 groundballs and 13 caused turnovers for the Panthers in 2018.

Senior Griff Caligiuri figures to factor in the group after posting nine groundballs and four caused turnovers last season. Junior Cap-petto and red-shirt sophomore Chris Price also return after campaigns with 9 groundballs and seven caused turnover and 10 ground-balls and four caused turnovers, respectively.

Junior Brian Stamm and sophomores PJ Peters and Grant Ammann will look to be con-tributors this season. Newcomers Cole Tanner, Dylan Leonard and Emmett Jones will round

out the group and add depth for the Panthers this season.

Defensive MidfieldLast season the Panthers were able to get

some much needed experience in the defen-sive midfield and return four contributors in juniors Nate Carter and Patrick Boppel and sophomores Colin Clothier and Taylor Acra.

“That defensive middie core is lockdown

with Collin Clothier and Taylor Acra,” Torpey said. “Patrick Boppel has done a really good job on close defense. Lastly, Jake Schleppy, a senior midfielder for us, really has the ability this year to gain separation and become a first dodge option type of player because he can hammer the ball. You’ve got to respect him there and he’s got really good vision and feed-ing ability. He’s had some injuries, but he’ll be back this year and I think he’ll surprise a lot of people.”

Clothier was named a Preseason Inside Lacrosse All-SoCon selection after recording two points, 12 groundballs and three caused

turnovers last season. Acra added two points, 16 groundballs and five caused turnovers for the group. Carter recorded one point, 12 groundballs and five caused turnovers in 2018, while Boppel had two caused turnovers to round out the returning group.

Junior Will Hynson and freshmen A.J. King, Trey Smith, Joel Scerbo and Jake Keller will add depth for the Panthers at the position.

Offensive MidfieldAt the offensive midfield position, HPU

returns five players who scored last season. Sophomore Koby Russell leads the returners

with 13 goals and two assists, while junior Dal-ton Sulver scored eight goals and dished out three assists. Junior Ricky Koehler returns after six goals and two assists in his 2018 campaign. Junior Mitchel Snyder logged four goals and two assists, while senior Peyton Bozel added one goal last season.

“In the midfield, I think the steadying force is Dalton Sulver and Koby Russell,” Tor-pey elaborated. “Both those guys have be-come guys that put a ton of pressure on you in terms of their ability to get underneath and their ability to beat you top side. Then we’ve got a young kid in Hunter Vines who is prob-ably the fastest guy to ever play on that field. His ability to break guys down in the midfield is very, very high end. Ricky Koehler who is a junior has been a big downhill threat.”

Senior Jake Schleppy will join the unit af-ter missing last season. He scored four points as a freshman before sitting out his sopho-more and junior seasons with injuries. Senior Ryan McLauglin will also play at midfield after appearing in eight games last season.

AttackSophomore Asher Nolting and senior

Chris Young will lead the attackmen after posting tremendous 2018 seasons. Nolting set a program and High Point record 30 goals and 36 assists. He was the first Panther to post a 30 goals, 30 assists season. The Greenwood City, Colo. native was named SoCon Freshman and Player of the Year Awards, which was the first time both awards were won by the same person in conference history.

“On attack, Asher Nolting is like a Magic Johnson type personality down there,” Torpey described. “He can score. He can feed. He’s big. He can lean on you. What he gives us in terms of not only with the ball play, but off the ball play and how he manipulates and gets to cer-tain spots in our offense that allow us to at-

tack. Also the riding game, the riding game with our attack unit is as good, if not better than, any team that I’ve ever coached. They’ve got an identity down there. It’s Asher and Chris Young.”

Young returns after a 2018 campaign where he scored 21 goals and added three assists. Sophomore Tyler Stinson will look to fill the role Connor Robinson left. Stinson had five goals last season. Juniors Ben Baker and Ian Sheeky and sophomores Matt Sellars and Sean Coughlin will round out the front group.

FaceoffHigh Point has six FOGOs on the roster

in senior Brandon Sovoie, junior Davis Sam-pere, sophomore Jack Cook and freshmen Zach Raudenbush, Dax Creagor and Andrew Albertson. Sampere returns after leading the team and ranking third in the SoCon in in fa-ceoff percentage at .538. Torpey will look to

Sampere to have a comparable 2019 season. He won 154 faceoffs in 2018.

“Davis Sampere at the faceoff X has re-ally become elite in the way he works and the way he attacks everyday,” Torpey said. “He’s re-ally become a master at that trade. He’s done a great job of figuring out all the little details and nuances it takes to be exceptional at that position.”

Savoie returns after winning 31 faceoffs and posting a .473 average in the X last sea-son. Sophomore Jack Cook returns after win-ning five faceoffs last season. Freshmen Dax Creagor, Andrew Albertson and Zach Rauden-bush round out the group at the X.

2019 Men’s Lacrosse

JON TORPEYHead Coach • Alma Mater: Ohio State ’00 • First season at HPU: 2012

Jon Torpey has led the High Point University men’s lacrosse program since its inception, having been named the program’s first head coach in 2010. It took just three seasons of NCAA competition for Torpey to lead the Panthers to an NCAA Tournament berth when the team defeated Richmond in the 2015 Southern Conference Championship game.

Over the team’s first five seasons the program has posted a 41-50 record with a 21-11 mark in league play (Atlantic Sun 2014 and Southern Conference 2015-pres.). Along with the NCAA Tournament berth and 2015 SoCon tournament title, Torpey led the Panthers to a regular season conference champion-ship in 2014 as well as a 12-11 overtime victory over then-No. 10 Virginia in February 2015. He also led the team to a share of the 2018 Regular Season SoCon Championship.

Under Torpey tutelage, 10 student-athletes have earned the opportunity to play lacrosse at the pro-fessional level while also coaching three conference players of the year, 19 all-conference first or second teamers. Leading the way collecting those honors, Dan Lomas was a three-time USILA All-American, two-time conference offensive player of the year and was drafted in both the Major League Lacrosse and National Lacrosse League drafts.

During the 2015 campaign, Pat Farrell and Geisler became the program’s first two MLL draftees before Lomas and Matt Thistle followed suit the next season. Tanner Landstra made it three years in a row with an MLL draftee while Dallas Bridle joined Lomas by being drafted into the NLL. In 2018, Connor Robin-son and Adam Dickson were drafted in the NLL, while Terrell Sands joined the Atlanta Blaze in free agency.

Similarly, Torpey has coached three Senior Class Award nominees in Austin Geisler, Lomas and Michael LeClair. Geisler was a nominee in 2015 while Lomas was one of 10 finalists for the award in 2016 and LeClair was a Senior CLASS First Team selection in 2017.

Off the HPU sideline, Torpey was published in the Business Journal and also appeared on ESPN during the networks coverage of the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He also served as the head coach of the South in the 2016 USILA/Nike North-South game.

Torpey and HPU made history in 2018. After going winless in nonconference play, the Panthers went 6-1 in SoCon play. They earned a share of the regular season title. Freshman Asher Nolting posted the first-ever 30 goals, 30 assists season in HPU and SoCon history. He was also the first player named Freshman and Player of the Year in the same season.

After losing the program’s first class to compete

at the NCAA level their whole careers, the Panthers went 4-10 in 2017. The squad was led offensively by Senior CLASS First Team selection Michael LeClair who tallied 18 goals and 13 assists. Meanwhile, on the defensive end Tim Troutner Jr. ranked fifth in the nation in saves per game with 12.50 per outing.

In 2016, the Purple & White became one of 12 teams nationally to win at least nine games in each of the 2014, 2015 and 2016 campaigns going 9-6 behind the offensive trio of Lomas, Thistle and LeClair. The three attackmen combined for 154 points on the year while Troutner went 8-4 in goal as a freshman. The team came close to a breakthrough win on Feb. 20 leading No. 4 Maryland late in the third quarter before falling 15-10. But the next time out, the Pan-thers claimed a 12-11 overtime victory over No. 10 Virginia. High Point finished the 2016 regular season on a five-game winning streak – the second-longest in program history – before falling to Richmond in the SoCon semifinals.

Lomas and Tyler Cook were named USILA Scholar All-Americans while Cook earned CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team accolades. Simi-larly, Lomas, Thistle and Zack Price were first-team all-conference selections as LeClair and Bridle made the second team.

Torpey’s best season at High Point came in 2015 when he led the Panthers to a 10-7 record, SoCon Tournament title and the program’s first NCAA Tour-nament berth – the first of any HPU men’s program in Division I competition. The team opened the lacrosse season with a 15-10 victory over Delaware on Feb. 1, then nearly knocked off the defending national cham-pion Duke at home the following week. The team lost three one-goal games early in the year before rattling off five wins over the final six games to qualify for the SoCon Tournament. Once there, HPU avenged their two regular season conference losses with one-goal wins over Mercer and Richmond. Geisler earned Tour-nament MVP honors in the crease. The team went on to play Towson in the NCAA Tournament and despite jumping out to a 5-0 lead, fell 10-8 in Baltimore.

Lomas led the SoCon with 38 goals earning of-fensive player of the year honors while Jamie Piluso joined him on the league’s first team. Thistle, LeClair, Farrell and Harris Levine were named to the league’s second team. Geisler, meanwhile, became the pro-gram’s first Senior CLASS Award finalist as Farrell was HPU’s first USILA Scholar All-American.

After dropping the first two contests of the 2014 season, High Point rattled off six straight wins, which is still the longest winning streak in program history with all the wins coming by two goals or fewer. The team ended up sharing the regular season Atlantic

Sun crown with Mercer before dropping its first chance to advance to the NCAA Tournament in a 8-7 loss to Richmond in the A-Sun title game.

Lomas (offensive) and Geisler (defensive) were the league’s players of the year as Piluso, Thistle and Farrell also made the A-Sun First Team. Likewise, Brad James, Garrett Swaim and Bucky Smith were second team selections while Cook was the league’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Torpey’s first NCAA contest as the head coach of the Panthers came in a 12-10 setback to Delaware on Feb. 2, 2013. The next time out, the Purple & White notched their first win, a 9-7 defeat of Towson. From there, the squad finished 3-12.

Torpey came to HPU after two seasons as associ-ate head coach at Dartmouth and five seasons at the University of Denver.

Torpey has quickly built a reputation as one of the best young lacrosse coaches in the nation. He was still playing professional lacrosse when he was named assistant coach at Denver in July 2004. In 2006 when he was 28 years old, Torpey was named associ-ate head coach at Denver, becoming the youngest Div. I coach in that position. At 32 years old, Torpey became one of the youngest head coaches in NCAA Div. I when he joined High Point University.

At Dartmouth, Torpey assisted in all aspects of the program, including recruiting all over the United States and Canada. He was responsible for monitoring educational progress and organizing successful fund-raising efforts. As defensive coordinator, he coached the 2010 Big Green to the third-lowest goals against in the Ivy League and led the team to the second-best penalty-killing percentage in the league. The highlight of the season was holding No. 6 Cornell to six goals in an 8-6 win at Gillette Stadium. The Big Red eventually made it to the NCAA Final Four.

Torpey earned his bachelor’s degree in educa-tion from Ohio State in 2000 and earned a master’s degree in education and sports administration from Goucher in 2003.

Torpey is originally from Baltimore, Md. He and his wife, Tegan, have a son, Tommy, and two daugh-ters, Maggie and Bridget.
