The Annual Bantam Hockey Tournament was re-named “The Tommy Tucker Memorial Bantam Hockey Tournament” in 1971 to give the late Tommy Tucker recognition for his outstanding contribution to both Senior and Minor Hockey in the Peace River area.
A tradition since 1971, this top caliber tournament is in honor of a man who personified the “true” meaning of a team player on and off the ice and whose winning spirit and dedication to his team, his family and community served as a model for those who knew him .
Tommy Tucker was an outstanding athlete who played defense for the Peace River Stampeders in the late 1940’s and early 50’s. He was born in New Bruns-wick in 1920, played Intermediate “A” hockey prior joining the Air Force during World War II and came to Peace River in 1947. It is doubtful that anyone living in the Peace River District at that time hadn’t heard of Tommy – he was known personally to many people here and in other parts of the country. As an athlete he was a natural leader and a top performer who believed in good sportsman-ship. Off the ice Tommy was equally outstanding as a person – always ready to extend friendship and help to everyone.
The Peace River District was very saddened to hear of Tommy’s untimely death in January of 1971, at the age of 51. He was survived by his late wife, the former Jean Cruikshank of Peace River and two sons, Bill and Allan.
