Dear MAANZ Members,
Welcome to our special pop-up edition of images from our recent Canberra
symposium exploring the transformative nature of mosaics.
A special thanks to our keynote speaker Dr Claire Barnett and our illustrious line
up of speakers who threw their light and love on this year’s theme. It has taken
me a week to sit with my experience of these extraordinary presentations. All
shared something personal, all moved me in different ways and all were insight-
ful to the role that art has played in their lives. It takes courage to present in this
way and I deeply thank all of you for your vulnerability and sharing.
From the moment the symposium began on Thursday evening with early regis-
tration and the vendors’ market there was a buzz that continued to resonate
throughout the event. From the presentations, exhibition awards night, dinner,
AGM, workshops, and brown bag exchange through to the salon on the Sunday
night. Presenters and participants alike brought a vibrancy and joy into the
shared space. And then for some of you, this continued excitement went into
the magical mystery mosaic tour on the Monday.
I would like to thank everyone for their participation and special thanks to all the
volunteers who helped make this symposium so bubbly. And an additional spe-
cial thanks to everyone on the committee who work so hard all year around and
who I feel at times are the forgotten volunteers. They are MAANZ’s heartbeat.
And if you haven’t heard the news……our next symposium will be in Noosa!

eMag The next eMag isn’t till November, so to tide you over, here is a photo roundup
of symposium highlights. Unless specified, these were all taken by our official
symposium photographer Kathryn Portelli - many thanks Kathryn!
The eMag will return in its usual form in mid November with a fuller symposium
report, plus all the usual articles and some exciting features.
