President’s Message
October 2020
Hello to my EWI of San Antonio Sisters! Fall is here, already. The crisp and cool mornings have been so refreshing. I hope that each of you are safe and today inds you doing well. So much has happened since we last gathered as a whole group. We have installed the 2020/2021 Board of Directors and many of us attended the virtual LCAM at Omni Hotel at the Colonnade. It was a wonderful time and so good to see several of our chapter representatives, along with a couple hundred EWI representatives from around the United States. We observed social distancing and very much enjoyed seeing one another and the presentations.
We have an amazing group of ladies serving on the board and each of them has already begun their new role. Now, more than ever, I feel we need each other in order to remain professionally and personally connected. In addition, we want to continue serving our community. There are so many people and organizations in need during these times. The possibilities are endless when it comes to identifying those in need. Committee assignments will be available soon. If you feel there is a committee that would bene it from your talents, please reach out and let me know. We need strong committee involvement in 2020/2021, so that we can continue to grow as a chapter. Committee work is a very bene icial networking tool; it’s a great way to get to know your fellow EWI sisters. We hope you will attend our annual committee night on Thursday, October 22nd. It will be outdoors, under a pavilion in MacArthur Park. We will de initely be following social distancing guidelines and would love to see each of you there. Membership renewals are coming up for many of us soon. Please know, EWI’s corporate of ice is allowing payment plans and a grace period for those who might need the extra time. Be sure and let us know if this might be the case for your irm’s membership and we will help with the process of setting up the payment arrangements. The grace period will end on January 1st, 2021. We need every member irm to retain membership during these times and we want to keep our chapter strong. We cannot do this without you! Thank you so much for allowing me to serve as Chapter President this year. I am looking forward to seeing each of you, hopefully very soon! With gratitude,

FALLING IN LOVE WITH WHOLE FOODS When you read the title of this article, did you think I meant the grocery store chain? The truth is, it’s a great place to start when wanting to adopt a healthier diet. But I’m wondering how many of us truly understand what it means to eat a whole foods diet. I can tell you right now, it’s not eating the whole burger, whole plate of fries, or whole bag of chips. There’s no doubt our meal choices have changed dramatically in the past 60 or more years, primarily as a result of our lifestyles. Our fast paced, stressed out lives have resulted in more fast food and physically stressed out bodies. Taking the time to prep a fresh meal and eat as a family is a rarity today. Few of us are also growing our own food or have access to nutrient dense options, although farmer’s markets are becoming more prominent. My goal this month is to help you fall in love with whole foods and encourage you to get as many of them as possible into your daily diet. So, let’s start by defining whole foods. They are foods that have been processed or refined as little as possible and are free from additives or other artificial substances. An easy way to assess whether a food is natural or full of preservatives is by the label. For the most part, whole foods do not have an ingredient list. They are the ingredients. Think of produce in the grocery store. You don’t get a long label attached to the broccoli or apples you purchase. Even when you purchase things like black beans in a can or a jar of all natural peanut butter, the ingredients are just that…beans and peanuts. Obviously, the beans and peanut butter were processed to a degree. But the difference is a mechanical processing, versus chemical processing. The best place to shop for whole foods is the along the perimeter of grocery stores. That’s where the fresher foods are. The inner aisles, on the other hand, are full of packaged products that often remain there for long periods of time. They may have an expiration date two years out even. The perimeters have products that will rot or mold if not purchased and consumed quickly. Those are the ones you want to be eating. Processed foods have been altered from their original state and often include unhealthy levels of added sugar, sodium and fat. These ingredients make the food taste better, but they lead to serious health issues like heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Processed foods have basically been engineered for overeating, knowing that our taste buds gravitate toward salty, fatty, and sweet. Processed foods even use chemicals to flavor them. When you see “artificial flavors” on a label, it means the company has created a proprietary blend and they don’t have to disclose the formula. Those two words can actually mean close to a dozen chemicals were added to create the taste. Processed foods are often also high in refined carbohydrates and the reason that carbs have gotten a bad rap. Carbs from single ingredient (or whole) foods are actually good for us.

There’s so many more downfalls to processed foods that I don’t have time or space to cover in this article. But when I label read, I stay on the lookout for ingredients I don’t recognize or can’t pronounce. That’s an easy red flag that chemicals have been added. Color numbers are a concern as well. If a food contains things like red #40 or yellow #5, that’s like a warning sign to stay away. In general, the more ingredients on the list, the more processed and harmful the food. So why does this all matter? Isn’t it just about calories consumed? Absolutely not. Our bodies were created to be fed by whole, natural foods. They are healing foods that actually nourish us. Being hungry is simply our bodies way of saying it needs nutrients. But instead of choosing whole foods, we usually grab processed foods with empty calories that meet zero nutritional needs. The result is being hungry again a short time later and overeating, which leads to a sick and overweight society. There’s no doubt that our country is reaching epidemic levels of both. One final thought on vitamins too. The reason most people take them is to compensate for over processed, nutrient deficient diets. But the truth is, they are chemically processed as well. If you’re not eating a diet primarily consisting of whole foods, then invest in a whole food supplement like Juice Plus+. I encourage you to visit www.wholefoodforlife.net and learn more about it. LCAM 2021 Dates Announced Save the Date for next year's biggest event for EWI -
September 16-18, 2021 - in Albuquerque, NM! Hosted by member firm, Sheraton Uptown, and planned by the LCAM 2021 committee, LCAM 2021 is sure to be bigger and brighter for all EWI members. Although we were not together for this year's event, we are planning to meet in person next year and will continue updating membership as more information becomes available. Please plan to join us!
2020/2021 Proposed Budget - Approved
The 2020/2021 Proposed Operating Budget was approved by the delegates by majority vote. Key changes due to the budget being approved include the following for EWI members beginning Thursday, October 1, 2020:
Membership Rate Changes
New Member Admin Fees at the Corporate Level will no longer be charged.
Credit Card Convenience Fees at the Corporate Level will no longer be charged.
New Member Corporate Dues are $200.
Renewing Member Corporate Dues are $165.
