SHIP’S LOG

The Voyage Continues

We Shall Endure! Our combined volunteer and staff crews served 5793 meals during the first quarter of 2020. During the month of April we served 5372 meals due to the increased need for meals due to the COVID-19 crisis. As of April 30th the total for 2020 is 11,165 meals served from our Mobile Soup Kitchen Disaster Unit.

Due to the Covid-19 virus, it was with deep sadness that we had to announce the cancellation of our 30th Annual Easter Sunday Holiday Meal. Many thanks to the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Somerville, Saint Bernard of Clairveaux Roman Catholic Church in BW & Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centers in BW, Edison & East Brunswick & Somerset County Jail Staff & the Somerset County’s Sheriff’s Department for their assistance with preparation for the cancelled Holiday Meals. We also wish to express our appreciation to Verves Restaurant & The Phoenix Café in Somerville, the People Care Center in BW for their offers of help

While we do not have use of the church halls to serve our soup kitchens guests we have been allowed to use their kitchens at SHIP’s Galley I at Saint John’s Episcopal Church & SHIP’s Galley II at the United Reformed Church. During March, many container meals were provided by our Galley I & II Volunteer Crews & distributed from our new SHIP’s Mobile Soup Kitchen/Disaster Unit that was purchased for us by the Montgomery/Rocky Hill Rotary club & others. The Galley I & II Directors Michael Brown and James Emanuel were in charge of the noon meals. We want to thank James Emanuel & John Grebeck from our Mobile Soup Kitchen prep-staff as well as the 32 Mobile Soup Kitchen Crews, Drivers/Operators & 875 volunteers that contributed 700 hours of service to accomplish this!

It is so spiritually uplifting to witness the high level of dedication we are receiving from our volunteers, staff & donors during this Covid-19 crisis. June 15, 2020 Dear SHIP-mates, Through the Grace of God and the help of people of good will, we have been able to keep SHIP under full sail during these trying COVID-19 times. There are more and more people arriving in their life boats and coming aboard SHIP looking for assistance because agencies are closed or operating from home. The increasing and unending request for emergency food supplies has nearly emptied our pantry, refrigerators and freezers. Hundreds more are coming to our Mobile Soup Kitchen – Disaster Unit looking for meals. Seniors are calling because they are unable to register at other food providers in order to get on their lists. Other groups are worried that agencies in Somerset County “need to create strategies to reduce duplication of services and asking if anyone has a system to make distinctions between real need and abuse.” These types of statements have me going to confession more often. At SHIP if people come looking for meals or food - we give it to them.

In the weeks and months ahead you may hear from a variety of groups asking for your support. These groups may be national or state wide in scope, funded heavily and primarily through federal, state and county dollars and are often required to financially support their parent organization in another part of the country. They usually have very polished and well-funded public relations programs that flood our mail boxes and messengers throughout the year. This is as polished as SHIP will get!

SHIP is blessed to be known as the agency of last resort. It is not uncommon for many ministers, church secretaries, lawyers, agency directors, workers and seniors in this area to send people to SHIP because we are here when they have nowhere else to go to get help for the person. If SHIP has the resources available, SHIP helps anyone in need. Please recognize that YOU ARE SHIP and without your help we can not do what we do.

Keep us in your prayers as we engage the enemy – POVERTY in our service to God and people we are called to serve.

Tom O’Leary, Captain

We are making a difference!

A thankful hungry grateful senior citizen receiving food from SHIP

She was on her way to the supermarket with the last of her funds… SHE CRIED WHEN WE GAVE HER FOOD

“I live in a shelter next to the school and if it wasn’t for them giving out food I don’t know where my self and kids would get food from this is so wonderful for you to do. Thank Mr Tom (SHIP) and Ms. Priscilla (IS/PS 178) you do so much for the kids.”

“As a mom of 3 who Is handicapped I was so happy to get the lunches and snacks. It made me feel like someone cared”.

SHIP’s COVID-19 Emergency Food Distribution was able to help over 400 children & adults at IS/PS 178 in Brooklyn, NY.

Captains Call for AmazonSmile donations

If you are shopping on Amazon don't forget to also support the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program!

AmazonSmile is a program through Amazon.com, which allows you to shop their site -at no cost- and a portion of the purchase price is donated to your chosen charity.

It's easy to use: • go to smile.amazon.com. • First time visitors to the site will be asked which organization they would like

to support. • Select Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (we are already on their list of

charities). • If you already have an Amazon.com account, that's fine too. You do not need

to set up a new one, just visit the AmazonSmile page to select your organization.

• There are no additional costs and the cost of items will still be the same. • When you are shopping, eligible items will be marked “Eligible for

AmazonSmile donation”…so you will know that by buying that item you are also helping the poor and homeless in our area

Please consider this option as you shop on-line during this pandemic. It's a simple way that you can help the us and do your shopping too!

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, mall shopping has been prohibitive. As such, more and more people are shopping on-line, typically on the Amazon site. Now more than ever, while you shop you can also help SHIP by using AmazonSmile …at no extra cost.
