From Rabbi Medwin:
It is with a very heavy heart that I give you this informa3on. In light of the surge in COVID cases, with special note to break-through cases for those who are fully vaccinated, the Return to Temple CommiCee in discussion with temple members, has decided that the health of our members is paramount. There are too many unknowns about the Delta variant to create a safe space in the sanctuary. In Judaism, Pikah Nefesh, saving a life, takes highest priority among the mitzvot. Thank you for your pa3ence and understanding as we have tried to navigate this journey in a safe way.
As we did last year, we will find a way to make our homes, computer screens and devices, a Mikdash M’at, a small holy sanctuary as we meet on Zoom and share these Holy Days together.
We will have two opportuni3es to gather outside during the holidays. 1. Tashlich has been moved to the first day Rosh Hashanah, Tuesday,
September. 7, aOer the morning service. We will meet at Dehoyos Park at 12:30 PM.
2. We will be postponing the Rededica3on Celebra3on un3l some3me in the spring.
3. We will s3ll be puVng up the Sukkah on Sunday, September 19, and invite you to come and celebrate Sukkot. This will enable us to gather before the snowbirds leave. Details of the Sukkah Party will follow in a temple email.

From the rabbi: God Sits at The Easel I am the morning dog walker. Each morning, very early, Mollie stares in my face until I open my eyes, to let me know she is ready for her morning walk. While I might not be quite awake as we exit the door to the apartment, I quickly look forward to the quiet of early morning anticipating what the sky might look on that day. I am blessed to be living in a beautiful apartment complex with a promenade along the Hudson River, so the sky is vast and open, as it reflects on the water. Living here has enabled me to envision the sky as a canvas on which God paints.
I have not written a poem since I was in high school, but one day, while walking the dogs, these words came to me. I believe God’s words passed through me as I sat at my computer to
write them down.
Rosh Hashanah is considered the birthday of the world. This is a poem celebrating creation and the world God created for us.
God Sits at The Easel Every evening God’s sits at The Easel Contempla3ng the new day.
What shall My canvas look like in the morning?
What colors should I use to start the day? Reds, oranges, yellows, pinks, for a beau3ful sunrise. And the clouds – Should they be wispy, full, billowing, fluffy, towering, or diffuse? Should they move swiOly across the sky, or slowly driO by?
For if I don’t change it, they will forget. The holiness of my beau3ful heavens will become mundane. Each morning I renew My canvas, lest they forget the glory of crea3on Lest they forget the joy of life.
And if their day is challenging and difficult, Feeling sad and alone, yearning and grasping, I renew their hope at night. Reds, oranges, yellows, pinks, as the sun sets. Glorious and majes3c. My canvas fills the sky with possibili3es for tomorrow. The moon - bright and encouraging, dark and contempla3ve The vastness of the stars as a reminder that I am here for them. They twinkle and sparkle, as a wink of assurance.
For if I don’t change it, they will forget. The holiness of my beau3ful heavens will become mundane. Each evening I renew My canvas, lest they forget the glory of crea3on Lest they forget the joy of life.
Rabbi Michele B. Medwin, D.Min.
On Sunday, September 5, from 11:00 a.m. – Noon, we invite you to stop by the temple building. This is what we will be offering:
1. Curbside High Holy mahzor/prayerbook pick up – Our mahzor contains many beautiful readings that we won’t be able to integrate into the Zoom service. To help enhance your own personal High Holy Day experience, we would like you to have these books in hand during the High Holy Day season to look through at your leisure. The books will NOT be needed for the actual services. All prayers for the service will be on Zoom slides. We ask you to return the books after the High Holy Days. This is for temple members in good standing only.
2. Spend private time in front of the ark - You will have an opportunity to spend private time before the ark with the Torahs dressed in white. Safety procedures will be required including masks and one family at a time indoors.
3. Receive a present from Rabbi Medwin – a special custom designed, white, for High Holidays, multi-layer face mask. (Masks will also be handed out at Tashlich and at the Sukkah Party.)

Though the threat of COVID is what keeps us from getting back into the temple, we are still very grateful to everyone that gave so much of themselves for the benefit of the temple community. THANK YOU to the many temple members who have worked so hard to get our temple building repaired and renovated and made the hard decisions on safe COVID protocols.

Thank you, Schmatah Brigade! After the workmen left, Lauren Miller, Stephanie Phillips, Phil Schroeder, Howard Perlman, Helene Perlman, Neal Jacobs, Susan Kantor, Mimi Werner, Ellen Nesin, Gail Abramowitz, Ruth Turk, and Ira Simon combined forces to make the temple shine in preparation for a triumphant return to the building. They brought mops, brooms, dust mops, schmatahs, cleaning supplies, a vacuum, and buckets.
The entrance, the steps, the sanctuary, the kitchen, and the bathrooms feel like new again. The crew cleaned and polished the bima, the ritual items, straightened shelves, and returned the prayer books to where they belong. The kitchen has never looked so good. Wow!
As a result of the efforts of the cleaning crew, the temple is once again in good shape for in-person services.
We owe a big thank you to the many busy bees who dusted and scr ubbed . Together they did a great j o b , c l e a n i n g a n d straightening things that hadn’t been touched in years.
When we finally return, we know we will be returning to a place that is ready to welcome us back.

Our last meeting for the season via zoom was on August 9. We were privileged to have Marvin Rappaport as our speaker. His topic was, “Interesting Tales from Faraway Places: A Man from Monticello Travels the Globe.” He told us about his goodwill missions to Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zaire, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Cameroon, Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, Germany, the former
Soviet Union and Israel. Those that were able to zoom enjoyed a very informative afternoon.
Being cautiously optimistic, we chose our 2022 meeting dates and proposed trips for the 2022 season. Our first meeting will be at Temple Sholom on Monday, May 16, at 1:00 PM.. We will have a meet and mingle and encourage our members to share what our lives have been like since March 2020. Meeting dates: May 16, June 13, July 11, August 8, and Sept 12Bus trips: NYC days on your own - June 29 and August 24Temple Sholom card party - Monday, August 15, 2022Day trips: Wed, July 20, with other trips to be announced by May About 20% of our members did not renew their $10 membership. At our board meeting we voted to remove people from our lists who have not paid in two years. They will no longer receive birthday cards with donations to the temple, the Harbinger, nor priority and discounts on our trips. We also voted to charge non-members $5 more for each trip and they will be able to attend after our members have requested a place on the trip.
Enjoy the rest of the summer and a Happy, Healthy New Year to all.

Oneg Shabbat means, “The Joy of Shabbat.”
We had hopes of returning to in-person services at the temple, but in an abundance of caution, we remain a virtual congregation. Therefore, VIRTUAL ONEG SPONSORSHIP WILL CONTINUE. Because of the pandemic, we no longer come together to “break bread.” But we can still perform the mitzvah by hosting a Virtual Oneg Shabbat. It’s simple. Pick a Shabbat you would like to “Virtually” Sponsor and let the rabbi know.
S e n d a n e - m a i l t o R a b b i M e d w i n ([email protected]) and tell her which Shabbat you will sponsor and if you have a specific reason: birthday, anniversary, in memory of, in honor of, to celebrate Shabbat, to support the temple, etc. If you provide a picture of the person or event that you are honoring, the rabbi will share it with the congregation during the service.
Send a donation check to: Temple Sholom
PO Box 664, Monticello, NY 12701 Write “Virtual Oneg Shabbat”
in the memo line.
The email sent to temple members the week of your oneg will recognize you as the sponsor and you will be acknowledged during the service and on facebook.
