Learner’s Service Friday, July 26, 2019

7:30 PM

Want to make the Shabbat service a more meaningful experience? Learn the structure of the service and the meaning behind the prayers during this special Visual T’filah service.

From: the Rabbi...

Moses Was A Very Humble Man

I am writing this the morning of Shabbat B’haalotecha. As I usually do on Erev Shabbat, I will be reading a few verses of this Torah portion during Shabbat services. Fifty two years ago, on June 17, 1976, I read the same verses when I became a Bat Mitzvah.

Each year when I read the Torah portion again, I learn a new lesson. The parsha is about Moses and Miriam. Miriam complains about Moses because he gets more attention from God than she does, and Miriam feels she is also a worthy prophet, as good as Moses.

After that exchange, the Torah says, “Now Moses was a very humble man, more so than any other man on earth.” ( Numbers 12:3) It is because of Moses humility that the Torah is called the Five Books of Moses. God wants to teach Miriam a lesson of humility so she is banned from the camp for a week.

How does Judaism define humility? Being humble does not mean being docile or meek. Being humble does not mean continually deferring to other opinions. Tr ue humility is believing that one’s special talents are gifts from God. Each person has been granted unique and special powers with which to effect change in the world. The humble person understands that he or she has been bestowed with these powers not for personal fulfillment but for tikkun olam, fixing the world, making the world better. The self-centered person looks upon his or her accomplishments as a sense of personal accomplishment. The humble individual removes the “I” from the task at hand. Saying not – “I need to perform these tasks,” rather, these tasks need to be performed by me in partnership with God.” Perhaps I was too young 52 years ago, to truly appreciate this valuable lesson.

Rabbi Michele Brand Medwin, D.Min.

“Hello Spring” Plant Sale a Big Success! Thank you to everyone who supported this year's temple garden by purchasing plants, giving a donation, and offering to help this summer. The response by temple members and friends was outstanding again this year.

A special thank you to Rosemary Deitsch for her donation of 10 hanging plants, to Jane Jacobs for helping us on plant pick up day, and to Stephanie Millett and Marcia Salton for their administrative assistance.

Proceeds from the plant sale will enable us to maintain our Temple Sholom gardens as well as support additional projects to keep the building and grounds looking good. For example, last season we painted the railroad ties bordering the front paths and gardens. They were quite damaged after several hard winters.

This spring we updated the window treatments in the sanctuary. The curtains and valences were very worn and shabby. We replaced them with contemporary light filtering shades, which will allow light in during the day and privacy after dark.

Because you helped, the garden and building continue to look great.

Thank you.

The Beautification Committee

Thank you Carolyn and t h e B e a u t i f i c a t i o n Committee for beautifying our sanctuary with new shades.

FROM SUE KANTOR – ONEG CHAIRPERSON Dear Congregants and Friends - Because of Stephie’s illness, she had to reduce some of her duties, one of those being the shopping and preparing of the onegs. Until she resumes those duties, we will have simplified menus from June through September.

REMEMBER TEMPLE SHOLOM IN YOUR WILL Bequests of all sizes are an important source of financial support for Temple Sholom, providing funds for temple programs, subsidizing membership, religious school scholarships, major maintenance of the building, and much more.

There are may ways you can make such a contribution to the temple in your will. You can specify a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, a special

fund, or the general fund. Together, you and your advisors should decide what best suits your individual circumstances.

Thank you from our members, students, and the community who will benefit from your thoughtfulness in the future. We recommend you always consult your legal and/or financial advisor when providing for such a gift.
