2021 CANADIAN OFF-SITE CONSTRUCTION STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION

The first annual Canadian Off-site Construction Student Design Competition will showcase Canadian student design innovation in modular, prefabricated, panelized, and other types of off-site construction. The competition is presented by the University of New Brunswick’s Off-Site Construction Research Centre (OCRC), a research group dedicated to optimizing alternate solutions to on-site construction. The student design competition is presented in partnership with OSCO Construction Group and the Modular Building Institute (MBI). The OSCO Construction Group is a collection of 10 companies operating in concrete, steel, and construction. They serve markets throughout Canada, the Eastern U.S. and the Caribbean. MBI is an international non-profit trade association serving modular construction. Other competition sponsors include NBIF and Ellis Don and BIRD Construction

Objective

The objective of this competition is to introduce students to off-site construction and to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration. It is also to showcase how off-site construction’s many potential benefits including cost savings, reduced construction timelines, improved safety, and improved construction quality can benefit the Canadian construction industry.

Eligibility and Teams

All students and recent grads registered in a FULL-TIME CANADIAN COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY PROGRAM within the last 12 months are eligible to participate in this competition.

Submissions are to be completed in TEAMS OF 1 TO 4 PEOPLE. Individual submissions are accepted although due to the interdisciplinary nature of offsite construction, students are strongly encouraged to form interdisciplinary teams of students with diverse knowledge and skillsets. This would include students from a variety of academic backgrounds such as architecture, engineering, construction management, project management, architecture/ engineering technology, skill trades, graphic design, fine art, etc. Students are not required to be part of the same academic institution to form a group.

Brief

Since this is the first year of the annual competition the project requirements will be somewhat open-ended, although submissions should include three components. Students are to select a site in Canada and to (1) DESIGN for the site AN OCCUPIABLE BUILDING THAT IS INTENDED TO BE FULLY OR PARTIALLY FABRICATED AT ANOTHER LOCATION (minimum 50% offsite construction). The proposal should demonstrate how an offsite solution can help address a pressing issue in the surrounding community.

In addition to the design of a building, students (2) MUST PRESENT A PLAN FOR OFF-SITE CONSTRUCTION for some or all of the building wall, floor, façade, or structural components/volumetric modules. Students should demonstrate an understanding of the project's supply chain and project timeline. Students should identify the locations where the various processes might occur and develop a logistics plan for getting offsite components/modules, to site.

Students should (3) PRESENT A PLAN FOR ON-SITE ASSEMBLY of the proposed off-site components/modules. This would include a plan for how various components/modules are placed together and connected. It is strongly recommended that special attention be given to the details of structural and Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP) connections.

Students are encouraged to research, modular construction, prefab construction, principles of Designing for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA), Industrialized Building Systems (IBS) and Integrated Project Delivery Methods (IPD). Students are also encouraged to reach out to experienced professionals to advise them on how they can improve the feasibility of their project.
