There are people that come into our lives and we are blessed our paths crossed. For me, that is how I feel when I think of Patti & Chief (Mike) Boudreau. From the very first time we met and I found out Chief was a Navy man, I knew we would be friends for many years to come.

Chief and Patti have both been intertwined in our officer core and held many different positions during their tenure. Patti always knew how to throw a great party and spent several years making our Christmas parties and annual Chapter picnic a huge success. When Judy and joined the chapter, I remember the chapter trying to update bi-laws and Chief being instrumental in getting that accomplished. They have both been instrumental in making this chapter what is it is today, and I know we all thank them for it.

Onto the Next Chapter in Life

Page 7: 2021 Ride & Event Calendar - Amazon Web Services

For many years Chief led a ride called Flags for Heroes and wow what a ride that was. When I took over the Annual Never Forget 9/11 Ride, Chief and Patti were always right there to help where needed. And that was thing about these two, they were always there when you needed them.

I will miss not seeing those faces in the room once a month and on rides. But like Chief said, this is not goodbye, they will both be around for some events and can always rent a bike when they want to join us.

Chief & Patti, it is my deepest honor to have you in my life and call you friend. Thank you for all you have done for this chapter and don’t go far! Hugs my friends!

A View From The Road by Mark Jones, Head Road Captain

Planning The Perfect Route

Before we know it spring will be here, we will awaken our bikes from their long winter’s nap and our 2021 riding season will begin. In order for any trip to be successful, you need a plan. Kathy & I like using the Harley Ride Planner to plan our rides. We will pick a destination, then look for interesting roads and routes. Usually our destination includes a restaurant or an ice cream shop. Our preference is to stay on State roads and avoid the interstates. Sometimes your travels will take you on county and local roads. Google Earth is a useful tool to check out your route.

Complete your route on the ride planner, using plenty of way points to identify turns, then download the .gpx file. Open Google Earth and import the .gpx file. Your route will be displayed on google earth and you can actually “fly” your route. Use the street view feature in Google Earth to check out the condition of the roads, this may save you from going down a gravel road. Another useful website we have found is www.motorcycleroads.com. This site shows the best roads for motorcycles in every state. Once we have identified our route, we then check for road construction.

Page 18: 2021 Ride & Event Calendar - Amazon Web Services

We go through the same process when planning a chapter ride. We have a destination and will establish a route using the route planner. We will check for any upcoming road construction and closures. The ride leader will then pre-ride or drive the route ahead of time. During the pre-ride, we are looking for convenient places for comfort stops and identify any potential hazards. We will also rate the ride from a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being an easy ride and 5 for a well seasoned motorcycle rider. Getting familiar with the route ahead to time will make the chapter ride safer and more enjoyable.

Every state department of transportation has a website that will show current construction projects. In Indiana http://indot.carsprogram.org shows current construction and closures. INDOT’s Next Level Road program identifies future road and bridge construction projects. A list of upcoming projects can be found at https://entapps.indot.in.gov. We always check for construction and closures so we don’t have any surprises.

Page 19: 2021 Ride & Event Calendar - Amazon Web Services

Every chapter ride has two key positions, the lead and the sweep. Both of these positions are Road Captain positions and will have a CB radio. The leader will establish a safe speed for the group and makes sure that the group stays on the ride plan. The sweep brings up the rear, communicating with the ride lead through the entire ride. The sweep makes sure that the group stays safe and together. The sweep will also secure lanes on a multi lane highway before the rest of the group moves over into the lane. If there is an issue along the way, the sweep will stop to lend assistance.

We have a group of experienced and dedicated members that volunteer their time for lead and sweep positions. These positions insure that our group stays safe and that the ride is enjoyable for everyone. If you are interested in becoming a Road Captain for the 2021 riding season, please contact me at [email protected].

Enjoy planning your rides and hopefully I’ll see you on a chapter ride.

Where to GoBy David Blankenship

One year later, same stance. It is winter and my bike is stored for a winter’s nap. My bucket list has Key West, Florida with that big pylon marking the Southern most part of the contiguous US. I scan Facebook bike pages and recently found the most Northern part of the contiguous US. One can see I do have parameters. It is in Minnesota! Angles Inlet, MN to be exact. It fits nicely in for a week trip. Only one problem, one must enter Canada and the border is closed. Currently it is only open to 120 residents of the inlet. I know where I now plan to ride in 2022!

Sitting here on another winter’s night and thinking about, “where could I ride,” if it were warmer. This was where I sat last year and came up with a Dragons and Snake route. Think of the famous and not as well-known Dragon and Snake routes and combine some of them! This ride did not happen; however, the basis was formed.

Page 24: 2021 Ride & Event Calendar - Amazon Web Services

Next day, I start over and plan a new route! Another beautiful site that keeps coming to mind is the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel. The aerial views are spectacular but, I envision the open bay road and riding through the undersea tunnel. The bridge and tunnel are around 20 miles with the tunnel being about a mile long under water. Wow! I do not mind a quick trip to see things that are cool and new to me. So how does one make this a fun journey? Well, Virginia Beach sounds fun to hang out for a while and if that is not enough, maybe I can find my way to Back of the Dragon to close out the journey. See it is easy to find a destination but let us make it as fun as possible there and back! I do foresee this ride one day even if its just to ride the ride and tunnel.

Hey all! Just a reminder to continue emailing me your mileage and hog#. I only need the VIN if you have multiple bikes or have never turned in mileage. Remember, if you have not given me a starting mileage and you start riding, those miles will not count towards the 365 program or end of year awards as I can not back date. So, please get those to me ASAP! Thank you to those who have turned in mileage so far and you should have received a confirmation from me as well.

As the February cold drags on this year my thoughts naturally turn to spring, where plants and critters start to return and new life literally sprouts from the ground. Pretty soon we can all get back to our favorite outdoor activities like riding, hiking and camping. It is great to live in Indiana where we get to experience all four seasons. Those long, warm summer nights aren’t really appreciated unless you shovel your share of snow – and we sure had plenty to go around this year!

The 2021 riding calendar is filling up fast. As we put COVID in the rear view, let’s make an effort to get back on two wheels as soon as the ground thaws, take on new adventures and meet new friends. Looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming Chapter events starting March 6.

Have something to share? Please email it to me for inclusion in next month’s newsletter.
