A research structure with the mission of“Understanding the Scientific Basis of Craniofacialand Oral Health” has been adopted by the School.Led by the Director for Research, Professor MikeDixon, this structure is divided into two researchthemes: Basic Sciences and Health Sciences. BasicSciences aims to improve craniofacial health byadding to the understanding of the mechanismsunderlying health and disease, and by developingimproved dental materials. Researchers working inthe Health Sciences theme aim to help enhancedental health by contributing to knowledge ofevidence-based health provision.
Within Basic Science, three main groups operate:craniofacial genetics, dental materials and stem cellresearch. Health Sciences includes health servicesresearch, systematic reviews, caries and diagnosticresearch, oral radiology and imaging, oral implants andoral surgery (including the control of pain and anxiety). Each of these groups has vigorous and excitingresearch strategies that include excellent opportunitiesfor postgraduate research (PGR) students.
Our PGR students are part of an exciting andsupportive research environment. They come fromboth clinical and non-clinical backgrounds and worktogether as a friendly and collaborative community.

PhD programmesWe offer two routes to doctorate degrees at the School of Dentistry: a traditional three-yearprogramme and a new, innovative four-yearprogramme. Studies can be either in clinical or non-clinical disciplines – see our website for details.
Three-year PhD – This traditional pathway to adoctorate degree in the School combines a smalltaught component (the Research Methods Course)with an intensive period of research under thesupervision of one of our academic staff. Researchtopics may be suggested by you or your supervisorand will fall into one of the research categories above.
Four-year clinical PhD – This programme allows you to combine clinical experience in any one of anumber of dental specialties with vigorous researchtraining. We are currently the only UK university tooffer a formal four-year PhD and it represents anexciting development in our postgraduate portfolio.
Currently offered in the clinical disciplines ofEndodontics, Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics,Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics, youcan combine research with clinical experience duringthe entire tenure of your time in Manchester. You will select a research project and supervisor in thenormal manner and then indicate that you wish to undertake the four-year programme. A clinicalsupervisor will also be assigned to you appropriate to your chosen clinical specialty.
We recommend that your research programme beallied to the clinical discipline, but it is possible tocombine non-clinical research within the programmeof activity. You will spend approximately threesessions per week on clinically related activities.
At the end of each year, assessment of clinical case reports will be undertaken. Throughout theprogramme you will be expected to demonstrate anincreasing diversity of clinical skills. This programmeis suitable for inexperienced as well as moreaccomplished clinicians, as a full skills audit will becarried out at the time of registration. The School of Dentistry boasts internationally recognised clinicalconsultants in all the offered disciplines and world-class clinical facilities.
We hope that for 2009 entry we will be able tooffer the opportunity for para-clinical studentsto undertake the four-year programme, egthose with a dental technology background.
MPhil programmesThe Master of Philosophy programme at the Schoolof Dentistry is undertaken full-time over 12 months,or part-time over 24 months. The course includes our popular Research Methods Course, as well as a substantial research component resulting in thesubmission of a thesis. Projects may be in clinical ornon-clinical areas and a full list of the MPhil degreesavailable can be found on our website. You arestrongly supported by your supervisor(s) andadministrator throughout your course and, ifsuccessful, are offered the opportunity to convert to one of our PhD tracks at the end of your programme.
MPhil degrees from Manchester are recognisedinternationally and are appropriate for those whowant experience in research without committing to aPhD. Individuals in community services, industry andclinical disciplines have all undertaken MPhil degreesat the School. Feel free to contact the admissionsteam for more information on MPhil degrees.

Endodontics
Course director: Dr Alison QualtroughBChD, MSc, PhD, FDS MRD RCS Ed
The endodontic courses give you a uniqueopportunity to work within a stimulating universityacademic environment of international standing and in world-class, state-of-the-art clinical facilities.
Before students treat their own patients, there is a pre-clinical component in which a variety ofsimulated exercises will be set, which must besuccessfully completed
There is a consultant-led team and you aresupervised either by consultants or specialists. Wecurrently adopt a team approach to patient care inwhich students work in pairs. On average, there willbe four clinical sessions a week. You will be expectedto manage and treat a variety of patients, most ofwhom will have advanced endodontic problems, although case selection and load will be determinedby your individual competence. At the end of eachsession, you will discuss your work with the tutor, giving you opportunity for reflection.
The evidence-based approach to the academiccomponent of the programme comprises a highlyintegrated schedule of seminars. You are expected to prepare in advance by reading papers and otherappropriate literature and to actively contribute tothese sessions, which serve as a forum forinteraction, debate and discussion. Seminars are ledby a wide range of experts from other departmentswithin the University, from other universities andfrom clinical specialists. The mode of presentation is highly varied and depends on the seminar leader.
In practical demonstrations and attendance atconsultation clinics, you will see a wide variety of referrals and be encouraged to participate intreatment planning. A journal club related to clinicalaspects of endodontics takes place on a regular basisand there is also the opportunity to visit severalspecialist practices.
We keenly encourage active participation in specialistsociety meetings, such as the British EndodonticSociety. This gives you the unique opportunity tohear speakers of international repute and to interactwith leading academics and clinicians in the field of endodontics.
We foster an open and friendly team approach.Students are well supported, whatever their needs, and in this way benefit from and enjoy their education.
For three-year MSc students, the range ofendodontic treatment encompasses more advancedcases and may be an integral part of a morecomprehensive restorative treatment plan, wherethey work with consultants and specialists in otherdisciplines. Presentation of research findings andclinical work is actively encouraged, and this maytake the form of either presentation of papers andposters at meetings, or publications in peer refereedjournals. Three-year students also attend advancedcourses and specialist society meetings, such as theEuropean Society for Endodontology.

Some students will also have the chance to work in some of the North West’s premier hospitals, which provide a wide and varied patient base.
You will also benefit from the ability to undertakemore extensive treatment plans and follow integratedcourses of care over the three-year period. Progresswill be monitored using clinical logbooks and annualclinical competency assessments.
Importantly, our three-year courses lead to eligibilityto sit the Royal College examinations appropriate to the discipline†. For example, those on theOrthodontic course may challenge the MOrth exam;Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics students may sit MRD, and those undertaking our Oral andMaxillofacial Surgery course may apply to sit MSurg. You are advised that passing the relevant specialtymembership examination does not necessarily lead to eligibility for entry onto the relevant Specialist Listheld by the UK General Dental Council. Furtherdetails can be found on our three-year MSchomepage, where links to the appropriateexaminations are provided.
We believe that our three-year courses offer a uniqueopportunity to undertake thorough, clinical specialtytraining in the UK’s number one dental school, †† aswell as living and working in an exciting and vibrantinternational city.
†Check the course approval status, details ofexaminations and eligibility criteria for specialiststatus on our website:www.manchester.ac.uk/dentistry/3yearprogrammes
