    1. mmmCATIOH o r UISSIOlIa. Field Order No. 4.7. Headquarter. XXIBom~erC~,dated 18 March 194.5. directed the 73ri. 313th. &rid 3Uth Bombart..tWings to participate in an attack against the Nagoya ~tban area.b. Targets Specified;

    (1) Primary Tp.rptl NagoyaUrban Area..(2) Segondary Target I None

    .2. STRATEGYNDPLANF OPERATIONS:a. Selection of P - D a Y : Continuing the plan of attaokingtargets on Honshu on alternate days for five consecutive miasions. itwas deCided to return to Nagoya inasmuch as the results from the firstattack had not been as good as desired. Weather forecast predictedgood weather at target and bases.b. Importance o( Target 1

    (1) The population of Nagoya is estimated to be 1, ':00, 000ranking third amongJap8.1lese cities. It is one of the 3 largest in-dustrial areaS in Japan and is the center of the Japanese aircraft in-dustry. It is estimated that 25 per oent of all its workers are en-gaged in some phase of aircraft production.

    (2) Important Japanese aircraft targets (numbers 193.19 4. 19 8, 2010. and 1729) lie within the city itself, while others(notably 240 and 1833) lie to the north of Iagam1gahara. It 1.s e8-tim~ted that the above mentioned units pro-duce between 40 and 50 percent of the total Ol;tput of Japanese combat aircraft and oombat air-oraft engines. The Nagoya area also prod~oes maohine tools. bearings,railway equiprlumt, meta.l a.lloys. tanks, motor vehicles, and processedfoods. .

    it 'WaSneoeseary to get the att.acking force over the target 1n ashorter period or time than on the previous attacks

    1. Aiming Points I Sinoe the mean.point 01 'impact for the 313th Wing was to the left, a different offset aim-ing point was assigned on nearly a direct line between the initialpoint and mean point of impact so that they would not have to exeoutea turn on the axis of attack. Mean points of impact for all wing.were staggered so that smoke from the bombing of one 'Wouldnot covorthose of the others. At the same time. they were close enough to-gether to a ll ow q ui ck merging of the f-ires. Selection of mean pointsof ~pact to acoomplish this was made difficult by the burned out areasfrom the first attack on this tar~t (Mission No. 41).
