EDITORIAL.....English pinglish

I am yet to make my great big for-tune in mutual funds. But meanwhile,i feel i have gained something moreprecious. I have learnt a new lan-guage - Pinglish. It is English chargedwith the speed and immediacy of a'ping', and its principles are simple.Just de-bone speech of all pauses, let consonants collapse into each otherand one sentence morph into thenext. Then, breathe in all the air inthe neighbourhood and belt out anentire paragraph faster than the hu-man ear can catch. You need to prac-tice hard, of course. Rome was notbuilt in a day! Before you can attainthe gold standard of the TV adver-tising superman and say 'Mutualfunds are subject to market risksplease read all scheme related docu-ments carefully before investing',you will need to expand the vital ca-pacity of your lungs, and coach yourtongue to perform a quick trapezebetween lip and palate. But i can as-sure you that it is well worth the ef-fort. In fact, my only regret is that idid not learn this verbal circus actsooner in life.I now realize why mycallow attempts at 'popping the ques-tion' to a succession of lady lovesmisfired uniformly. The mistake imade was that i dawdled; taking mytime in unveiling the secrets of theheart in a fine filigree of prose. Mid-way through this mellifluous oratory,i lost my audience. Elsewhere too, sticking to the conventional speed lim-its of speech has been of little help.It certainly has not helped at the of-fice. For too long have i kept puttingoff asking the boss for a desperatelyneeded hike in pay. Now, Pinglish hasgiven me the confidence to be ableto state my case before acute stagefright sets in. Emboldened by speed,i may even be able to slip in a fewfruity asides on the lines of 'The-kind-of-money-this-office-doles-out-w h o- s a y s - s l a v e - l a b o u r - i s -abolished?'Freed from the tyranny ofthe elaborately structured sentence,we can all go about our lives at afaster clip. If Twitter and sms have

knocked out florid prose and ren-dered long compositions comatose, the ability to say everything in a singlegasp can make arguments shorter, funny stories briefer (and thereforewittier) and condense communica-tions into capsules. It may also lib-erate us from that necessary evil ofevery conference - the key note ad-dress. Chief guests are honourablemen but if you have heard one, youhave pretty much heard them all. Most people in an audience actuallydread the moment when the guestof honour steps up before the miketo share his experiences and 'say afew words'. If they sit through hisspeech, it is only because of whatcomes after - food and drink. So theguest of honour who volunteers tocompress his wisdom into a single, seamless utterance will surely be thetoast of the evening. As a practisingPinglish speaker, i believe the T20style of speech could come in handyin Parliament. From what we sawof the last sessions of our Lok Sabha, the need of Zero Hour is not master-ful marshalling of facts or carefullycrafted argument. MPs need to bequick off the mark and finish speak-ing before the Opposition can reachtheir happy hunting ground - the wellof the House. Since sound travelsfaster than human beings, Pinglishwill help members on the TreasuryBenches to rush through Bills andresume their seats even as a raucousOpposition is girding its loins for thecustomary charge.I also see quickspeech as the liberating anthem ofsociety's marginalized - the meekamong us who are never quite ableto put our views across. So gatherall ye who stand by helplessly as theircontributions to the flow of conver-sations are abruptly cut short, whosepunch lines are preempted, and ring-ing conclusions left unheard. We shallovercome our legion of interjectorsby outpacing them. So, altogethernow: Thank you, mutual funds. Orto put it better - thank you mutualfunds!

Tamil Nadu model is better thanModi’s Gujarat model, Rahul Gandhi saysRAMANATHAPURAM:Lauding the Tamil Nadumodel as better than theGujarat model, Congressvice-president Rahul Gandhion Monday said he washappy that Congress wasfighting the elections alone inTamil Nadu and hoped theparty would capture power inthe state in 2016.

Addressing a publicmeeting to seek votes for theparty candidate SThirunavukkarasar at coastalRamanathapuram district aday before election campaign-ing comes to an end in thestate, Rahul hit out at BJPprime ministerial candidateNarendra Modi for projectingGujarat as an ideal state.

Rahul heapedpraises on Tamil Nadu's de-velopment. "Tamil Nadu hasshown what Tamil people arecapable of. Modi talks aboutGujarat model. Maybe, heshould come here and take alook at TN model" Rahul said.

Rahul said that thecountry "does not need a gov-ernment that makes Hindusfight Muslims." "You mustensure that a secular govern-ment comes to power at the

Centre," he said."We don't need a

government that spreads ha-tred among people, a govern-ment that makes Hindus fightMuslims. We don't need agovernment that imposesideas from one state to an-other," he said.

Rahul, who gener-ously invoked the name ofCongress stalwart KKamaraj throughout hisspeech, called upon thepeople to vote for the Con-gress in the Lok Sabha elec-tions as Tamil parties are notgoing to form government atthe Centre.

"We are going to givethe people of Tamil Nadu thetype of government they de-

serve," Rahul said to a hugeapplause from the cadres.

"I am proud to seeparty workers charged up andready to fight the electionsunder Congress banner. Nowwe will not have to compro-mise," he said in an apparentreference to coalition com-pulsions the party faced in thepast.
