Being sedentary can
even be more danger-
ous than smoking. It
can lead to illness, obesity
and certain cancers.
Physical fitness is imperative
to hinder and decrease therisks of several diseases, as
well as to help improve
overall physical and emo-
tional health. It helps you
feel better about yourself,
reduces depression and anxi-
ety, improves sleep, increas-
es muscle and bone strength,
promotes better balance and
helps to reduce falls.
The most important
aspect of physical fitness ismaking sure you find some-
thing that you enjoy and
have fun partaking in so that you
can stay focused and motivated.
Some people enjoy walking or
running, or swimming and water
exercise classes. Those who enjoy
dancing can take classes such as
Zumba or line danc-
ing. Some like a
more meditative and
less aerobic approach
and would benefit
from getting in-
volved in a Pilatesor yoga program.
Others prefer high-
impact cardio class-
es, such as kickbox-
ing, step aerobics
and spinning. When
it comes to physical
fitness, the possibili-
ties are endless.
Anything that gets
your body moving
and your bloodpumping can make a
huge impact on your
overall health and wellness.
Why not create a new you
this new year? Start moving! Just
30 minutes three or four times a
week can make a huge difference
in your overall health. Whether
you start a walking program, join
a gym or even opt to work with a
personal trainer to help gain some
motivation and start working onyour fitness goals, you will be
making a big step on your path to
better health and wellness.
Nicole Cox, a wellness manager with
10 years of experience, is certified in
personal training (AFPA), senior fit-
ness, fall proof, AFAA group fitness

Iwrite my column todayfrom Sunny Singer Island,
Riviera Beach, Florida.
Im on vacation for a week
with my wife, Terry. It is one
of our only weeks away by
ourselves since our daughters
birth 25 years ago. Four yearsago, Terry toured Ireland with
my daughter while my three
boys and I went on a man-
cation to the Dominican
Republic. In fact, for as far
back as I can remember, all of
our vacation time includedour kids! Not that thats a bad
thing quite the contrary.
But I still cant believe that it
has been 25 years since weve
had a honeymoon week away.
Its definitely long overdue.
So, here we are, swimming in75-degree weather, missing
the kids and wishing they
were here with us!
Every time I visit
Florida, the place my mater-
nal grandfather migrated to
upon retirement, I have con-templated the same thing:
retirement in Florida. Do I
really want to escape the
snowy winters fulltime?
Whenever Papa Jack would
come back to our area for a
visit, he would complain
about the cold, even when it
was a balmy 70 degrees. He
said he had acclimated to the
climate in Florida, hated the
cold and couldnt wait to get

Parents, aunts, uncles,
and even older broth-
ers and sisters often
look on with pride when
their young relatives receive
the sacrament of Holy
Communion. One of three
Sacraments of Initiation
within the Catholic church,
the sacrament of First
Holy Communion, or the
Eucharist, is a momentous
event in the life of a young
Catholic. To Catholics, First
Holy Communion is the first
time they receive the body
and blood of their savior
Jesus Christ.Despite receiving First
Holy Communion at a rela-
tively young age (most chil-
dren receive the sacrament at
the age of seven or eight),
young Catholics are schooled
on the significance of the day
and many of them recognize
just how it important it is to
their faith and their family
members. That significance
is only highlighted by the
presence of family and
friends on the day that young
Catholics receive the
Eucharist for the first time.
Many families celebrate the
day with a party that com-
mences after children receive
the sacrament, and it's cus-
tomary for relatives to give
youngsters a gift to commem-
orate their special day.
When it comes to gift-
ing youngsters on their FirstHoly Communion, there are
certain guidelines many
Catholics follow, and many
of those guidelines have to
do with the new communi-
cant's gender.
Are you looking for-
ward to celebrating
your childs first com-
munion this spring? Then
dont miss the first commun-
ion expo at Macks Bar and
Grill in Pompton Lakes on
Sunday, Jan. 12 from 123pm.The season for first com-
munions is approaching fast
and there are several details
that must be planned in
advance to make your childs
special day extra memorable.
Several local businesses from
downtown Pompton Lakes
have joined together to help
families plan their events.
The expo is free and
open to the public. Comebrowse the latest options for
clothing, haircuts, hair styling
and accessories, rosaries, kits,
photography and framing
options, banners and catering.
Professional representatives
from various local businesses
will be available to meet with
you, discuss your needs,
answer your questions and
inform you about available
deals and specials. There will also be door
prizes, raffles, and free give-
aways.
The expo is hosted by
Cinderellas Closet Childrens
Boutique, Renatos Portrait
Studio, Cardinal Frame and
Fine Art, Zaynas Cuts for
Kids, the Parish Store and
Macks American Bar and
Grill.
The event will be held in the
new upstairs banquet room at
Macks Bar and Grill, located at300 Wanaque Ave. in Pompton
Lakes. For more information,

back down south.
Now, at 52, I can relate .
After skiing for 40 years, I
gave it up simply because its
too cold out there on theslopes! I gave away the
parkas, ski pants and hats. My
son Zachary, whose feet are
exactly the same size as mine,
inherited my equipment. I
thought golf would become
my new aspiration and recre-
ational activity, but Terry
insists that today is not the
day! Were too young to
retire with two high school-
age boys at home, she says. Ireply that perhaps we are too
young to retire, but not too
young to purchase a vacation
home in Florida that one day
may morph into our retire-
ment palace.
If we owned two homes, one in New Jersey and the
other in Florida, we could
live in either whenever we
wanted to. Staff may be hired
to do all the necessary chores
and repairs on both proper-
ties, leaving me in the most
rudimentary of positions:
check-writer, paying others to
do the hard work! (Im not
climbing any ladders, paint-
ing walls or fixing toiletbowls. Those days are over for
me.) With two houses, the
kids could finish school in
Wayne and we could practice
retiring for a few years, until
we decided whether to make
it a permanent decision. At this point, Terry tear-
fully repeats herself about our
age, kids and retirement.
I think my logic is sound, but
wives have spousal logic that
husbands just dont under-
stand most of the time. The
law we do understand com-
pletely is, A happy wife is a
happy life! As a result, my
conclusion must be that we
are just too young to retireright now!
A client of mine once
described retirement as snug
as a bug in a rug. If you can
afford to maintain a lifestyle
of your choosing, regardless of
stock, bond, currency, or real
estate market conditions,
while enjoying the amenities
you have aspired to attain
through your working years,
as well as protecting yourportfolio from liability risks,
Scientists in England,
led by professor Paul
Sharpe, an expert in
craniofacial (head and
brain) development and cell
biology at Kings College in
London, have developed anew method of replacing
missing teeth with bioengi-
neered material
from a persons
own gum cells.
In his
work, professor
Sharpe and his
researchers isolat-
ed adult human
gum tissue, grew
more of it in his
lab, and then com-
bined it with theembryonic cells of
mice that form
teeth (mesenchy-
mal cells). By
transplanting this
combination of cells into
mice, they were able to grow
hybrid human/mouse teeth
containing all the elements
of natural tooth enamel,
dentin and roots.
These easily accessiblegum cells are thus a realistic
source for consideration in
human bio tooth formation,
said professor Sharpe. The
next major challenge is to
identify a way to culture
adult human mesenchymal
cells to cause tooth forma-
tion.
Someday, our own gumcells could be used to replace
missing, broken or infected
teeth in humans.

As a family caregiver,
you may find your-
self facing a host of
new responsibilities, many of
which are unfamiliar or
intimidating. You may betaking care of an aging par-
ent or a handicapped spouse.
Or perhaps youre caring for a
child with a physical or men-
tal illness. And at times, you
may feel overwhelmed and
alone. But regardless of your
particular circumstances,
youre facing a challenging
new role. The following tips
can help you get the support
you need while caring for
someone you love.
1.Accept your feelings.
Caregiving can trigger a host
of difficult emotions, includ-
ing anger, fear, resentment,
guilt, helplessness and grief. Its important to acknowl-
edge and accept what youre
feeling, both good and bad.
Dont beat yourself up over
your doubts and misgivings these feelings simply
mean youre human.
2.Ask for help. Even if youre
the primary family caregiver,
you cant do everything onyour own. Youll need help
from friends, siblings and
other family members, as
well as health professionals.
If you dont get the support
you need, youll quickly burn
out compromising your
ability to provide care.
3.Make time for yourself.
While youre caring for your
loved one, dont forget about
your own needs. Take time to
relax daily and learn how to
regulate your stress when you
start to feel overwhelmed. Its
also important to stay social.
Make it a priority to visit reg-
ularly with friends and fami-
ly. Dont let yourself become
isolated.
4.Care for your body. Exercise
regularly. Try to get in at least30 minutes of exercise three
times per week since exercise
is one of the best ways to
relieve stress and boost your
energy. It is also imperative to
go to all of your regular doc-
tors checkups. Remember to
eat healthily and get enough
rest.
5.Talk with others. Even
when you understand why
youre feeling the way you
do, it can still be upsetting.
In order to deal with your
feelings, its important to talk
about them. Dont keep your
emotions bottled up; find at
least one person you trust to
confide in.

There is a considerable
financial incentive for
businesses to want to
classify workers as independent
contractors rather than as
employees. For employees, a
business is required to pay pay-
roll taxes and other employee
benefits such as paid time off
and pension contributions.
None of these is required with
independent contractors.
Depending on the type of
business you are in, some busi-
ness functions lend them-
selves to being done by con-
tractors while other functions
simply are not. The facts and
circumstances of each case
will decide the proper treat-
ment. It is important to get it
right to avoid the prospect of
an IRS audit tapping you for
back payroll taxes, penalties
and interest.
So how does one go about
getting it right? The determina-
tion is made by reviewing the
evidence as to the degree of
control of the business over the
worker and the job function.
Does the company have the
right to control how and when
the worker does his job? How is
the worker paid by the hour
or by the job? Who provides
the tools and supplies for the
job? Is there a written contract
between the parties spelling out
rights and responsibilities of
each? Is the job for your compa-
ny ongoing or does the worker
perform services for other cus-
tomers? These and other factors
will help make the proper clas-
sification for your workers.
If your facts and circum-
stances do not leave you with a
clear indication as to whether
or not you have an independ-
ent contractor, give us a call
and well review your worker
classifications with you.

Independent contractor or
employee? The distinction matters
I
ts the time of year when
people make resolutions to
be a better and healthier
version of them. So why not
make resolutions that will
mutually benefit you and your
pet? Here are some ideas to
help you and yours have the
best year yet.
Eat more fresh food.
This may seem like an
easy resolution.
However, it takes time
and preparation. For
humans, this means
incorporating more
fruits and veggies into
your diet while for pets
this means ensuring
that their pet food uses
ingredients such as
fresh turkey, salmon
and duck, fresh omega
3 and 6 oils (from coconuts
and canola), wholesome
berries and fruits and vegeta-
bles like peas, spinach and
carrots. Now Fresh premium
pet food by Petcurean is a
great example. You can
learn more about choosing a
pet food with the freshest,
healthiest ingredients at
petcurean.com.
Get more exercise. Did you
know pets can decrease our
blood pressure and cholesterol
levels and increase our oppor-
tunities for exercise, outdoor
activities and socialization?
Exercising together will not
only help optimize your health
but also allow you to spend
more time together.
Use that agenda. This does-
nt seem like a resolution, but
sometimes making a plan is
the only way resolutions will
come to life. Most of us sched-
ule time for other appoint-
ments and meetings, so why
not set aside some priority
time for pets too.

Testosterone is
the male hor-
mone that is
responsible for develop-
ing the testes during
puberty. It contributes
to male attributes such
as facial hair and a
deepened voice, while
affecting a mans libido
and even his mood.
Symptoms of Low-
Testosterone (Low-T)
After the age of
30, a mans testosterone
levels naturally begin
to decrease. This
regression is usually
gradual and spread out
over the rest of his life.
In some cases though,
the levels drop rapidly, which
leads to a host of symptoms.
Some of these may include:
-Diminished sexual desire
-Clinical depression
-Less energy
-Loss of bone density which will
appear as a loss of height
-Decreased strength due to
depleted muscle mass
-Weaker erections
-Obesity, type 2 diabetes, or
problems with your thyroid
-Less semen during ejaculation
-Testicle shrinkage or numbness
in the testicles
-Erectile dysfunction
Causes of Low
Testosterone (Low-T)
Among the known
causes of low testos-
terone, medical experts
have defined three
main factors. They
believe the condition
originates either in the
testes, pituitary gland,
or the hypothalamus of
the brain.
Low testosterone in
relation to the testes
can occur due to a
number of reasons:
-Undescended testicles
-Injury to the testicles
-Cancer therapy in
response to testicular
cancer
-Aging
-Contracting the mumps in
puberty or adulthood because
which leads to an inflammation
of the testes
-Genetic conditions such as a
chromosome abnormality
When low testosterone is a
result of a condition in the
pituitary gland or hypothala-
mus, doctors may seek out
one of the following:
-Damage to the pituitary gland
caused by a tumor
-A malformed hypothalamus
-A decrease in blood flow to the
pituitary gland or hypothalamus
-The existence of the HIV or
AIDS virus because either one
may inflame the pituitary gland
or hypothalamus
We may also ask if youve
used anabolic steroids or have
been battling with obesity,
because both factors can
interfere with the bodys natu-
ral production of testosterone.
Low-T Testing and
Treatment
The first test your doc-
tor should perform when you
come into the office is a
blood screening to determine
where your testosterone lev-
els are at. In some cases they
may be already be dangerous-
ly low before any of the more
serious symptoms have
become apparent.
Whether your symptoms
have begun to impair your
quality of life or not, we
always recommend that you
pursue some type of treatment
plan. Ignoring low testos-
terone can lead to more seri-
ous conditions over time such
as a weakening of bone and
muscle mass.

KIDS
Areview published in a
2010 issue of the
medical journal Pedi-
atrics found that children ben-
efited from weight training. In
the review, researchers from
the Institute of Training
Science and Sports Informatics
in Cologne, Germany, ana-
lyzed studies that focused on
children and weightlifting.
The review looked at studies
going as far back as 60 years,
finding that children and ado-
lescents who lifted weights
grew stronger. Those who par-
ticipated in strength training
twice per week gained more
strength than those who par-
ticipated just once per week.
These findings contradict a
longstanding belief that chil-
dren do not actually get
stronger. But while children
and adolescents may be getting
stronger, researchers found that
they do not add as much bulk
or obvious muscle mass as
adults. Instead, researchers feel
the strength changes in chil-
dren and adolescents stem
more from neurological
changes that make their nerv-
ous systems and muscles inter-
act more efficiently. Though
parentshave long worried that
strength training will stunt
their children's growth,
researchers now feel that prop-
erly supervised strength train-
ing will not stunt growth or
lead to growth-plate injuries
and will perhaps even reduce
their risk of injury as opposed
to increasing that risk.

When gifting a girl who
just received the Eucharist
for the first time, religious
jewelry can make a great gift.
A cross or crucifix that
young ladies can wear as a
necklace appeals to many
young girls' love of jewelry
while allowing them to
showcase their faith at the
same time. If not a cross or
crucifix, a sacramental
charm bracelet can make an
ideal gift.
For boys who just
received their First Holy
Communion, a cross or cru-
cifix also makes an appropri-
ate gift. Another gift idea for
boys is a miraculous medal
that can be inscribed to com-
memorate the day. Many
grown men still have the
medals they received at their
First Holy Communion and
consider these medals among
their most cherished posses-
sions.
Of course, not all gifts
are gender-specific. Books,
including the Bible, that will
instill a greater understand-
ing of the faith and help
children grow as Catholics
make great gifts for boys and
girls. Rosary beads also make
great gifts for boys and girls.
Creative gift-givers
might also want to make a
DVD or photo album of a
youngster's First Holy
Communion, which is a gift
they can share with others,
including their own children
someday, for years and years
to come.

After a long season ofuse, fireplaces need
to be cleaned. Many
homeowners think this is a job
that can be put off until the
fall, but spring is an ideal sea-
son to have the chimney and
flue cleaned and inspected.
One reason to include scrub-
bing the chimney as part of
spring cleaning is to cut down
on odor. After using a fire-
place, a buildup of creosote
forms in the chimney. As theweather gets warmer, creosote
deposits can start to smell sourand that odor will seep into
the home. In addition, mois-
ture can mix with the creosote
and start to degrade the flue
liner, necessitating costly
repairs. The sooner a chimney
and flue are cleaned the bet-
ter. A chimney sweep can do a
thorough job of scrubbing
down the chimney and fire-
place and ensuring that every-
thing will be in working order
come next season.

Exercise. Lose the weight.
Answer every incomingemail.
Those are the hard
kinds of New Years resolu-
tions, because you have to
think about them every day
for the rest of the year. Many
are forgotten long before
Valentines Day.
But heres one important
resolution, one you can fulfill
today and easily keep all year:
protect your identity.Identity theft is a fast-
growing crime, but there are
ways to reduce your chances
of being a victim. The identi-
ty theft protection experts at
LifeLock recommend doing
these five quick things today
to help keep your identity
safer all year long:
Use safe passwords
Are you among the peo-
ple who use simple passwords
like 123456 or qwerty or
abc123 to protect your per-sonal information? Or even
the word password itself?
Many people do, so identity
thieves can often break in just
by trying the most popular
passwords.
To create a safer pass-
word, avoid using words that
are in the dictionary. And
stay away from your own per-
sonal information, like a
nickname, pets name orbirthdate. One option is to
come up with a memorable
phrase that includes numbers
and symbols, and use the first
letter of each word. My
Tigers are Number One in
Football! might become
MTaN1iF! - a good example
because it uses capital letters,
lower-case letters, a number
and a symbol.
Use multiple passwords
Stop using the same
password for every account.Several big companies and
websites have recently had
their users personal informa-
tion stolen by hackers. If your
password for one site is com-
promised, and you use thesame password for your bank
and credit accounts, its much
easier for a thief to get into all
of them.
At least have a different
password for each account
that has personal or financial
information. And consider
using a password-manage-
ment program, which lets you
set more cryptic passwords for
each site you visit and control
them with one master pass-
word.Stash that Social Security
card
Do you carry your Social
Security card in your purse or
wallet? Dont.
You may, on a rare occa-sion, need to show a Social
Security card to an employer
or a government agency.
Aside from those days, keep it
locked up in a safe place. Your
Social Security number is a
thiefs ticket to everything
from opening new accounts in
your name to stealing your tax
refund. Dont run the risk of
losing it.
Protect your mail
Do your bank state-
ments, credit card bills andutility invoices arrive by mail?
If your mailbox is outside your
house, thieves can take those
bills and collect personal
information that
helps them steal
your identity. And
once those docu-
ments are in your
house and no
longer needed,
they can be stolenfrom a trash can or
recycling bin.
First, if
your mail is deliv-
ered outside your
home, install a
locked mailbox.
And use a shredder,
or the shredding
services offered by
local shipping stores and some
credit unions, to destroy doc-uments once theyre no
longer needed.
But you can also take
steps to keep that paperwork
from ever arriving at your
home in the first place. Have
bills sent to you electronical-
ly; youll get them by email,
save paper, reduce clutter and
never have to worry about
stolen mail or shredding. Opt
out of credit card and insur-
ance offers by visiting
www.optoutprescreen.com.And dramatically reduce the
amount of unsolicited mail
you receive by opting out of
junk mail at www.dma-
choice.org.
Be prepared for a loss
If your wallet or purse is
stolen, youll want to cancel
all of your credit and debit
cards before they can be mis-
used. Keep a copy of each of
your cards, or use a digitalwallet program like LifeLock
Wallet, which is available for
your smartphone from the
iOS and Android app stores.
It gives you instant access to
copies of your cards and also
helps you track your balances,
monitor transactions and can-
cel cards that are lost or
stolen.

for YourDinnerParty
Over the last couple of years, dining out has become an even bigger luxury than itonce was. Thanks to the struggling economy, many people have decided to cutback on spending, and dining out has become casualty of such events.
While the economy is gradually rebounding, dining out is still largely reserved forspecial occasions among those whose memory of the recession is still fresh. However, dining out does remain a strong choice when hosting a special occasion such as a birthdayparty or anniversary celebration. When choosing a restaurant to have such a gathering, consider the following tips to ensure that rare restaurant night out goes off without a hitch.
NEWwhats
in dining?
Look for versatility in a menu. Whendining out, the emphasis is obviously on thefood. Couples might enjoy certainrestaurants they have previously patronized, but that does not necessarily make therestaurant ideal for a party. When shoppingfor a restaurant, look for one that boasts aversatile menu that can cater to a vast arrayof palates. Especially for larger parties, theversatility of the menu is very important.Restaurants that boast a large entreeselection that includes meat, poultry, seafood, and even vegetarian dishes ensureseach guest has options.
Examine the elbow room. Because diningout has become such a luxury, comfortshould be another key consideration. Look
for a restaurant that provides ample elbowroom so everyone can relax and wont feelcrowded.
Be sure there are places to park. Chancesare, most guests will be driving to the party. While it seems like an afterthought, therestaurant should provide ample, and ideallyfree, parking. Avoid restaurants that chargefor valet service or inquire if such servicecan be included on the tab ahead of time.
Reserve well in advance. If its a trulyspecial occasion, be sure to begin the process
of finding a restaurant as early as possibleand make a reservation the moment adecision is made. Reservations can alwaysbe cancelled should things not work out.

Experimenting is part of
the joy of cooking.Altering recipes for old
favorites can open your eyes
to new and delicious alterna-
tives. For those who want a
new take on burgers, consider
the following recipe for Lean
& Green Dill Salmon Burgers
With Creamy Cocktail Sauce
from Michelle Dudashs
Clean Eating for Busy
Families (Fair Winds Press).
Lean & Green DillSalmon Burgers with
Creamy Cocktail Sauce
Makes 4 servings
For the burgers:
1 1/4 pounds wild Alaskan
salmon, skinned, boned, cut
into 6 large chunks
1/4 cup stemmed fresh dill (or
4 teaspoons dried dill)
1 scallion, cut into 4 pieces
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
2 teaspoons sherry vinegar (orred wine vinegar or rice vine-
gar)
2 teaspoons reduced-sodium
soy sauce
1 small garlic clove
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground
black pepper
Expeller-pressed canola oilspray
4 whole-grain hamburger buns
1 avocado, thinly sliced
8 slices tomato
1 cup leafy salad greens
Lemon wedges
For the sauce:
3 tablespoons olive oil mayon-naise
4 1/2 teaspoons cocktail sauce
To make the burgers:
Preheat grill on medium
heat to 375 F. Add 3 pieces of
salmon, along with dill, scal-
lion, mustard, vinegar, soy
sauce, garlic, and pepper, to afood processor and run until
mixture becomes pasty. Scrape
down the sides of the bowl
and add remaining salmon.
Pulse a few times until chunks
become bite-size pieces.
Gently form salmon into
4 patties, not overworking, to
make a tender burger. Lightly
coat the cut sides of buns with
spray. Oil the grill and place
burgers on grate; cook for 4minutes on the first side and 2
minutes on the flip side. Place
cut side of buns on the grill to
toast, right after flipping the
burgers. Remove patties and
buns from grill.
Recipe notes:
If fresh dill isnt available
(dill season peaks in summer
and early fall), substitute flat-
leaf parsley.
You can make your owncocktail sauce with 1 table-
spoon of natural ketchup, 1
teaspoon of horseradish, and
1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice.
If you dont feel like grilling,
saute the patties in 2 tea-
spoons of olive oil in a large
frying pan over medium heat.
