    hat everybody’s been

    talking about for

months is finally here— Brother Bruno’s Pizza, Deli &

    Bagels is now open!

    Originally founded in 1976,

    Brother Bruno’s is Wayne’s oldest

    family-owned and operated pizze-

    ria. It has become known

throughout the area for its pizza,

    but also serves calzones, strombo-

    lis, cheese steaks, subs, pasta,

    wings and zeppoles. Now, com-

bined with the Deli & Bagel store,

they are also able to offer all of your favorite breakfast foods all

    day long.

    The deli sells fresh-baked

    bagels and homemade cream

    cheese spreads, including a spe-

    cialty flavored cream cheese of

the month. You can also order

great tasting and healthy breakfastdishes: hot sandwiches, egg plat-

    ters, omelets, pancakes and french

toast. And then there’s the fresh,

    homemade baked goods, includ-

    ing muffins, croissants and

    turnovers. For lunch, there are

    hot and cold sandwiches (featur-

ing Boar’s Head brand meats and

    cheeses), soup, burgers, hot dogs

    and salads.

    The real-life brothers and

owners, Neil and Vinny Mazzella, are excited about the new com-

    bined business venture.

    “Leaving the old building

    was bittersweet,” Neil said.

“There is so much of our personal

    family history in that building.

But we are excited to start our

new era as Brother Bruno’s Pizza,Deli & Bagels.”

    Brother Bruno’s Pizza, Deli &

Bagels has some new items on

    their menu. They added some

more salads, like a mixed baby

    green salad with glazed walnuts

and feta cheese and dried cranber-

ries. There are new specialty pizzasand a healthier menu that

    includes protein pancakes, egg

    white platters and low-fat tuna.

    Iwrite my column today

    from Sunny Singer Island,

    Riviera Beach, Florida.

I’m on vacation for a week

with my wife, Terry. It is one

of our only weeks away byourselves since our daughter’s

birth 25 years ago. Four years

    ago, Terry toured Ireland with

    my daughter while my three

boys and I went on a “man-

    cation” to the Dominican

Republic. In fact, for as far

back as I can remember, all of

    our vacation time included

our kids! Not that that’s a bad

    thing — quite the contrary.

But I still can’t believe that ithas been 25 years since we’ve

    had a honeymoon week away.

    It’s definitely long overdue.

So, here we are, swimming in

    75-degree weather, missing

    the kids and wishing they

    were here with us!

    Every time I visit Florida,

    the place my maternal grand-

    father migrated to upon retire-

    ment, I have contemplated

    the same thing: retirement in

Florida. Do I really want to

    escape the snowy winters full-

    time? Whenever Papa Jack

would come back to our area

for a visit, he would complain

about the cold, even when it

was a balmy 70 degrees. Hesaid he had acclimated to the

    climate in Florida, hated the

cold and couldn’t wait to get

    back down south.

Now, at 52, I can relate.

After skiing for 40 years, I

gave it up simply because it’s

too cold out there on the

    slopes! I gave away the

parkas, ski pants and hats. My

    son Zachary, whose feet are

exactly the same size as mine,

    inherited my equipment. I

    thought golf would become

    my new aspiration and recre-

    ational activity, but Terry

insists that today is not the

day! “We’re too young toretire with two high school-

age boys at home,” she says. I

reply that perhaps we are too

young to retire, but not too

    young to purchase a vacation

    Testosterone is the

    male hormone that

    is responsible for

    developing the testes during

    puberty. It contributes to

    male attributes such as facial

    hair and a deepened voice,while affecting a man’s libido

    and even his mood.

    Symptoms of Low-

    Testosterone (Low-T)

After the age of 30, a

    man’s testosterone levels nat-

    urally begin to decrease. This

    regression is usually gradual

and spread out over the rest

of his life. In some cases

though, the levels drop rap-idly, which leads to a host of

    symptoms.

    Some of these may include:

    -Diminished sexual desire

    -Clinical depression

    -Less energy

-Loss of bone density which will

appear as a loss of height

    -Decreased strength due to

    depleted muscle mass

-Weaker erections-Obesity, type 2 diabetes, or

     problems with your thyroi d

    -Less semen during ejaculation

    -Testicle shrinkage or numbness

    in the testicles

    -Erectile dysfunction

    Causes of Low Testosterone

    (Low-T)

    Among the known caus-

    es of low testosterone, med-

ical experts have definedthree main factors. They

    believe the condition origi-

    nates either in the testes,

    pituitary gland, or the hypo-

    thalamus of the brain.

    Low testosterone in relation

to the testes can occur due

    to a number of reasons:

    -Undescended testicles

    -Injury to the testicles

-Cancer therapy in response totesticular cancer

    -Aging

    -Contracting the mumps in

     puberty or adulthood because

which leads to an inflammationof the testes

    -Genetic conditions such as a

    chromosome abnormality

    When low testosterone is a

result of a condition in the

    pituitary gland or hypothal-

    amus, doctors may seek out

    one of the following:

    -Damage to the pituitary gland

    caused by a tumor

-A malformed hypothalamus-A decrease in blood flow to the

     pituitary g land or hypothalamus

-The existence of the HIV or

     AIDS virus because either one

    may inflame the pituitary gland

    or hypothalamus

    We may also ask if

    you’ve used anabolic steroids

    or have been battling with

    obesity, because both factors

    can interfere with the body’s

    natural production of testos-terone.

    Low-T Testing and

    Treatment

    The first test your doc-

    tor should perform when you

come into the office is a

    blood screening to determine

    where your testosterone lev-

els are at. In some cases theymay be already be dangerous-

ly low before any of the more

    serious symptoms have be-

    come apparent.

    Whether your symptoms

    have begun to impair your

quality of life or not, we

    always recommend that you

    pursue some type of treat-

    ment plan. Ignoring low

    testosterone can lead to more

serious conditions over timesuch as a weakening of bone

    and muscle mass.

    There is a considerable

    financial incentive for

    businesses to want to

    classify workers as independent

contractors rather than asemployees. For employees, a

business is required to pay pay-

    roll taxes and other employee

benefits such as paid time off

    and pension contributions.

None of these is required with

    independent contractors.

    Depending on the type of

business you are in, some busi-

    ness functions lend themselves

    to being done by contractors

while other functions simplyare not. The facts and circum-

stances of each case will decide

    the proper treatment. It is

important to get it right toavoid the prospect of an IRS

audit tapping you for back pay-

    roll taxes, penalties and inter-

    est.

So how does one go about

    getting it right? The determina-

tion is made by reviewing the

evidence as to the degree of

control of the business over the

    worker and the job function.

    Does the company have the

right to control how and whenthe worker does his job? How is

the worker paid — by the hour

or by the job? Who provides

the tools and supplies for the

job? Is there a written contract

    between the parties spelling out

    rights and responsibilities of

each? Is the job for your compa-

ny ongoing or does the worker

    perform services for other cus-

    tomers? These and other factors

will help make the proper clas-sification for your workers.

    If your facts and circum-

stances do not leave you with a

clear indication as to whetheror not you have an independ-

ent contractor, give us a call

    and we’ll review your worker

    classifications with you.

    Scientists in England,

    led by professor Paul

    Sharpe, an expert in

    craniofacial (head and

    brain) development and cell

    biology at King’s College in

London, have developed anew method of replacing

    missing teeth with bioengi-

    neered material

    from a person’s

    own gum cells.

    In his

    work, professor

    Sharpe and his

    researchers isolat-

    ed adult human

    gum tissue, grew

    more of it in his

    lab, and then com-

bined it with theembryonic cells of

    mice that form

    teeth (mesenchy-

    mal cells). By

    transplanting this

    combination of cells into

mice, they were able to grow

    hybrid human/mouse teeth

    containing all the elements

    of natural tooth enamel,

    dentin and roots.

“These easily accessiblegum cells are thus a realistic

    source for consideration in

    human bio tooth formation,”

    said professor Sharpe.” The

    next major challenge is to

    identify a way to culture

    adult human mesenchymal

    cells to cause tooth forma-

    tion.”

Someday, our own gumcells could be used to replace

    missing, broken or infected

    teeth in humans.

    Parents, aunts, uncles,

    and even older brothers

    and sisters often look

    on with pride when their

    young relatives receive the

    sacrament of Holy

    Communion. One of three

    Sacraments of Initiation

    within the Catholic church,

    the sacrament of First Holy

    Communion, or the

    Eucharist, is a momentous

event in the life of a young

    Catholic. To Catholics, First

    Holy Communion is the first

    time they receive the body

and blood of their savior Jesus

    Christ.

    Despite receiving First

    Holy Communion at a rela-

    tively young age (most chil-

    dren receive the sacrament at

the age of seven or eight),

    young Catholics are schooled

on the significance of the day

    and many of them recognize

just how it important it is to

    their faith and their family

    members. That significance is

    only highlighted by the pres-

ence of family and friends on

    the day that young Catholics

    receive the Eucharist for the

    first time. Many families cele-

brate the day with a party that

    commences after children

    receive the sacrament, and

    it's customary for relatives to

give youngsters a gift to com-

    memorate their special day.

    When it comes to gifting

    youngsters on their First Holy

    Communion, there are

    certain guidelines many

    Catholics follow, and many of

    those guidelines have to do

    with the new communicant's

    gender.

    When gifting a girl who

    just received the Eucharist for

    the first time, religious jewel-

ry can make a great gift. A

    cross or crucifix that young

ladies can wear as a necklace

    appeals to many young girls'

    love of jewelry while allowing

    them to showcase their faith

at the same time. If not a cross

    or crucifix, a sacramental

    charm bracelet can make an

    ideal gift.

    For boys who just

    received their First Holy

    Communion, a cross or cruci-

    fix also makes an appropriate

gift. Another gift idea for boys

is a miraculous medal that can

    be inscribed to commemorate

the day. Many grown men still

    Are you looking for-

    Areview published in a

    2010 issue of the

    medical journal Pedi-

    atrics found that children ben-

    efited from weight training. In

    the review, researchers from

    the Institute of Training

    Science and Sports Informatics

    in Cologne, Germany, ana-

    lyzed studies that focused on

    children and weightlifting.

    The review looked at studies

going as far back as 60 years,

    finding that children and ado-

    lescents who lifted weights

    grew stronger. Those who par-

    ticipated in strength training

    twice per week gained more

    strength than those who par-

    ticipated just once per week.

    These findings contradict a

    longstanding belief that chil-

    dren do not actually get

    stronger. But while children

    and adolescents may be getting

    stronger, researchers found that

they do not add as much bulk

    or obvious muscle mass as

    adults. Instead, researchers feel

    the strength changes in chil-

    dren and adolescents stem

    more from neurological

    changes that make their nerv-

    ous systems and muscles inter-

    act more efficiently. Though

    parentshave long worried that

    strength training will stunt

    their children's growth,

    researchers now feel that prop-

    erly supervised strength train-

ing will not stunt growth or

    lead to growth-plate injuries

    and will perhaps even reduce

their risk of injury as opposed

    to increasing that risk.

    As a family caregiver,

    you may find your-

    self facing a host of

    new responsibilities, many of

    which are unfamiliar or

    intimidating. You may be

taking care of an aging par-

    ent or a handicapped spouse.

Or perhaps you’re caring for a

child with a physical or men-

tal illness. And at times, you

    may feel overwhelmed and

    alone. But regardless of your

    particular circumstances,

    you’re facing a challenging

    new role. The following tips

can help you get the support

    you need while caring for

    someone you love.

    1.Accept your feelings.

    Caregiving can trigger a host

    of difficult emotions, includ-

    ing anger, fear, resentment,

    guilt, helplessness and grief.

    It’s important to acknowl-

    edge and accept what you’re

    feeling, both good and bad.

    Don’t beat yourself up over

    your doubts and misgivings

    — these feelings simply

    mean you’re human.

2.Ask for help. Even if you’re

    the primary family caregiver,

    you can’t do everything on

    your own. You’ll need help

    from friends, siblings and

    other family members, as well

    as health professionals. If you

    don’t get the support you

    need, you’ll quickly burn out

    — compromising your ability

    to provide care.

    3.Make time for yourself.

    While you’re caring for your

    loved one, don’t forget about

your own needs. Take time to

relax daily and learn how to

    regulate your stress when you

    start to feel overwhelmed. It’s

    also important to stay social.

Make it a priority to visit reg-

    ularly with friends and fami-

    ly. Don’t let yourself become

    isolated.

    4.Care for your body.

    Exercise regularly. Try to get

in at least 30 minutes of exer-

    cise three times per week

since exercise is one of the

best ways to relieve stress and

    I

t’s the time of year when

    people make resolutions to

    be a better and healthier

version of them. So why not

    make resolutions that will

    mutually benefit you and your

pet? Here are some ideas to

help you and yours have the

    best year yet.

    •Eat more fresh food.

    This may seem like an

    easy resolution.

    However, it takes time

    and preparation. For

    humans, this means

    incorporating more

    fruits and veggies into

    your diet while for pets

    this means ensuring

    that their pet food uses

    ingredients such as

    fresh turkey, salmon

    and duck, fresh omega

3 and 6 oils (from coconuts

    and canola), wholesome

    berries and fruits and vegeta-

    bles like peas, spinach and

    carrots. Now Fresh premium

pet food by Petcurean is a

    great example. You can

    learn more about choosing a

    pet food with the freshest,

    healthiest ingredients at

    petcurean.com.

    •Get more exercise. Did you

    know pets can decrease our

    blood pressure and cholesterol

    levels and increase our oppor-

    tunities for exercise, outdoor

    activities and socialization?

    Exercising together will not

    only help optimize your health

but also allow you to spend

    more time together.

    •Use that agenda. This does-

n’t seem like a resolution, but

    sometimes making a plan is

    the only way resolutions will

come to life. Most of us sched-

    ule time for other appoint-

    ments and meetings, so why

    not set aside some priority

    time for pets too.

    Being sedentary can

    even be more danger-

    ous than smoking. It

can lead to illness, obesity and

    certain cancers. Physical fit-

    ness is imperative to hinder

and decrease the risks of sev-

eral diseases, as well as to help

    improve overall physical and

    emotional health. It helps you

    feel better about yourself,

    reduces depression and anxi-

    ety, improves sleep, increases

    muscle and bone strength,

    promotes better balance and

    helps to reduce falls.

    The most important

    aspect of physical fitness is

    making sure you find some-

thing that you enjoy and have

fun partaking in so that you

    can stay focused and motivat-

    ed. Some people enjoy walk-

    ing or running, or swimming

    and water exercise classes.

    Those who enjoy dancing can

take classes such as Zumba or

    line dancing. Some like a

    more meditative and less aero-

    bic approach and would bene-

fit from getting involved in a

    Pilates or yoga program.

    Others prefer high-impact

    cardio classes, such as kick-

    boxing, step aerobics and

    spinning. When it comes to

    physical fitness, the possibili-

    ties are endless. Anything that

    gets your body moving and

    your blood pumping can make

a huge impact on your overall

    health and wellness.

    Why not create a new

you this new year? Start mov-

ing! Just 30 minutes three or

four times a week can make a

    huge difference in your overall

    health. Whether you start a

    walking program, join a gym

or even opt to work with a

    personal trainer to help gain

    some motivation and start

    working on your fitness goals,

you will be making a big step

on your path to better health

    and wellness.

    Exercise. Lose the weight.

    Answer every incoming

    email.

    Those are the hard kinds

    of New Year’s resolutions,

    because you have to think

about them every day for the

rest of the year. Many are for-

    gotten long before Valentine’s

    Day.

    But here’s one important

    resolution, one you can fulfill

today and easily keep all year:

    protect your identity.

    Identity theft is a fast-

    growing crime, but there are

    ways to reduce your chances

of being a victim. The identi-

    ty theft protection experts at

    LifeLock recommend doing

    these five quick things today

    to help keep your identity

    safer all year long:

    Use safe passwords

    Are you among the peo-

    ple who use simple passwords

    like “123456” or “qwerty” or

    “abc123” to protect your per-

    sonal information? Or even

    the word “password” itself?

    Many people do, so identity

thieves can often break in just

    by trying the most popular

    passwords.

    To create a safer pass-

    word, avoid using words that

    are in the dictionary. And

stay away from your own per-

    sonal information, like a

    nickname, pet’s name or

    birthdate. One option is to

    come up with a memorable

    phrase that includes numbers

and symbols, and use the first

    letter of each word. “My

    Tigers are Number One in

    Football!” might become

    “MTaN1iF!” - a good example

    because it uses capital letters,

    lower-case letters, a number

    and a symbol.

    Use multiple passwords

    Stop using the same

    password for every account.

    Several big companies and

    websites have recently had

    their users’ personal informa-

    tion stolen by hackers. If

your password for one site is

    compromised, and you use

    the same password for your

    bank and credit accounts, it’s

much easier for a thief to get

    into all of them.

    At least have a different

    password for each account

    that has personal or financial

    information. And consider

    using a password-manage-

    ment program, which lets

    you set more cryptic pass-

words for each site you visit

    and control them with one

    master password.

    Stash that Social Security

    card

    Do you carry your Social

Security card in your purse or

    wallet? Don’t.

You may, on a rare occa-

sion, need to show a Social

    Security card to an employer

    or a government agency.

Aside from those days, keep it

locked up in a safe place. Your

    Social Security number is a

    thief’s ticket to everything

    from opening new accounts in

your name to stealing your tax

refund. Don’t run the risk of

    losing it.Protect your mail

    Do your bank state-

    ments, credit card bills and

    utility invoices arrive by mail?

If your mailbox is outside your

    house, thieves can take those

    bills and collect personal

    information that helps them

    steal your identity. And once

    those documents are in your

    house and no longer needed,

they can be stolen from a

    trash can or recycling bin.

    First, if your mail is

    delivered outside your home,

    install a locked mailbox. And

use a shredder, or the shred-

    ding services offered by local

    shipping stores and some

    credit unions, to destroy doc-

    uments once they’re no

    longer needed.

    But you can also take

    steps to keep that paperwork

    from ever arriving at your

home in the first place. Havebills sent to you electronical-

ly; you’ll get them by email,

    save paper, reduce clutter and

    never have to worry about

    stolen mail or shredding. Opt

out of credit card and insur-

    ance offers by visiting

    www.optoutprescreen.com.

    And dramatically reduce the

    amount of unsolicited mail

you receive by opting out of

    junk mail at www.dma-

    choice.org.

    Be prepared for a loss

If your wallet or purse is

    stolen, you’ll want to cancel

all of your credit and debit

cards before they can be mis-

used. Keep a copy of each of

your cards, or use a digital

    wallet program like LifeLock

    Wallet, which is available for

    your smartphone from the

    iOS and Android app stores.

It gives you instant access to

copies of your cards and also

    helps you track your balances,

    monitor transactions and can-

cel cards that are lost or

    stolen.

    Do these things today

    and you can proudly declare

that you’ll keep at least one

New Year’s resolution all yearlong: Protecting your identity.

    You can learn more

    about identity theft, and ways

to keep you and your family

    safe, from the Federal Trade

    Commission at www.con-

    sumer.ftc.gov and from

    Spencer Savings Bank, a

    community bank head-

    quartered in Elmwood

    Park, held its seventh annual

    Thanksgiving food drive to

    ensure local families in need

were fed this holiday and had a

    traditional Thanksgiving

    meal. The bank collected food

in support of three local com-

    munity organizations: Loaves

    and Fishes Interfaith Food

    Pantry of Garfield, Comm-

    unity Food Bank in Hillside

and Center for Food Action in

    Saddle Brook.

    Spencer Savings Bank

    collected non-perishable food

items in all 18 branch loca-

    tions throughout Bergen,

    Essex, Passaic and Union

    counties, in addition to the

    bank’s headquarters, to con-

    tribute to the fight against

    hunger.

    Overwhelming support

    from both employees and cus-

tomers led to the bank’s suc-

cessful food drive. SpencerSavings Bank employees

    handed over six large baskets

filled with food items to the

    Loaves & Fishes Interfaith

    Food Pantry, more than 1,000

    tons of food to the

    Community Food Bank on

     November 22, and 10 large

bags filled with food to the

    Center for Food Action.

    “Thanks to the incredible

efforts of our generous staff and

    customers, we were able to

    provide several local families

    with nutritious food to enjoy

    on Thanksgiving,” said José

    Guerrero, chairman, president

    and chief executive officer of

    Spencer Savings Bank. “It was

    a bank-wide effort to ensure

that all members of our com-munity had a meal on

    Thanksgiving, and we are

    thankful to have the support

    and resources to brighten the

    holiday season for our neigh-

    bors who need it most.”

    Spencer Savings Bank

    has several events and charita-

home in Florida that one day

may morph into our retire-ment palace.

    If we owned two homes,

one in New Jersey and the

other in Florida, we could live

    in either whenever we wanted

to. Staff may be hired to do all

    the necessary chores and

    repairs on both properties,

leaving me in the most rudi-

    mentary of positions: check-

writer, paying others to do the

hard work! (I’m not climbingany ladders, painting walls or

    fixing toilet bowls. Those days

are over for me.) With two

    houses, the kids could finish

school in Wayne and we could

    practice retiring for a few

    years, until we decided

whether to make it a perma-

    nent decision.

    At this point, Terry tear-

    fully repeats herself about our

age, kids and retirement.I think my logic is sound, but

    wives have spousal logic that

    husbands just don’t under-

stand most of the time. The

    law we do understand com-

pletely is, “A happy wife is a

happy life!” As a result, my

    conclusion must be that we

are just too young to retire

    right now!

    A client of mine once

    described retirement as “snug

as a bug in a rug.” If you can

afford to maintain a lifestyle of

your choosing, regardless of stock, bond, currency, or real

    estate market conditions,

    while enjoying the amenities

    you have aspired to attain

    through your working years, as

    well as protecting your portfo-

lio from liability risks, healthcare costs, the ravaging

    expense of long-term care and

taxes at death, then you can

    earned income paycheck for-

    ever.

    Yes, financial independ-

    ence may be described as

“snug as a bug in a rug,” allow-ing for the contingencies

    described above. You would

then be free to live out your

life as you planned it to be.

Richly or frugally by choice, if

planned for well in advance of

    your actual retirement date,

    financial independence can

be yours and your spouse’s to

    enjoy.

    Insulated from any harm

by the rug of protection andsecurity, the bug can live out

    its life snugly, or snuggling

with another bug of its choice.

For most of our clientele, the

rug is made up of multiple life-

    time guaranteed streams of

    income woven together by the

    insurance industry.
