~In Our Thoughts & Prayers~ Homebound Parishioner of the Week

“Dear Parishioners, I would like to thank you for your generous dona-tion of food items that help stock our pantry shelves. We are consistently serving over 800 families each month. As the need continues, it is churches like yours that help us serve our community well. Thank you again for your support and your contin-ual giving to the St. Alphonsus Food and Clothing Pantry. God bless you all Blessings, Michelle Hatfield Director of Social Concerns St. Alphonsus Parish” The above thank you note I share with you as it comes from St. Alphonsus, our mother parish. They have a very large and active food pantry partly due to their loca-tion on Leonard Street. Our food pantry has not been that active other than for some parishioner families with need as we are harder to find hidden behind the cemetery. So what we have been doing is being a resource for St. Al-phonsus’s food pantry. It makes no sense to me for us to compete with them or for us to try to recreate the wheel when we know that they have an active food pantry mean-ing they have people who staff it and work with those who come for assistance. With their clothing center and Cathe-rine’s Heath Center right there on their property they are in the perfect spot for this service to the needy. However, at the same time it is important for us to be able to continue to do the works of charity such as feeding the hungry. That is why we have the food collection box in the narthex of the Church. Wouldn’t it be great if every week that box was overflowing with food when the Masses were done because our concerns for the needy and our desire to be charitable were so great? Imagine what we could do if we got into the habit of each family simply bringing one canned good item to Mass with them each weekend. The box would never be empty after the Masses are done as it is sometimes now. As we give thanks to God each week for the many ways God has blessed us, let’s not forget about the works of charity which we can easily accomplish if we just remember to think of those with less, and to each bring our little tiny contribution remembering that many hands make light work—a little from many becomes a lot.
