On the cusp of a new order
EvenaftertwoyearsofhighdramasincethecollapseofLehman,theworldisstillexperiencingveryuncertaintimesandyetdespitethetalkoffurthermarketcrashes,acurrencycrisis,financialmeltdownandthedemiseofhedgefunds,thereisa great deal of optimism for the future of investment funds. However,mostpeopleareagreedthatthefuturewilllookverydifferenttowhathasgonebefore.Forinstance,therearemajorregulatorychangescomingdownthetracknotonlyin the regulation of the investment funds industry itself but financialservicesgenerally,includingtheregulationofbanks.Thesechangeswillhavetheirownimpactonourindustry.
Whilemostofusareoptimisticaboutthefutureitisnotatallclearwheretheindustrygoalpostswillfinallybeplaced.Thereisstillmuchdebate,lobbyingandworktobedoneifwearetoinfluenceaneworderwhichwillbepracticalandworkable.ThisiswhytheGlobalisationofInvestmentFundsConferencewithitslongandillustrioustrackrecordismorerelevantthanever.Lastyear’sconferencewasanunqualifiedsuccessandIbelievethemainconcernfor2011iswhetherthevenuewillbeabletoaccommodatetheexpectedincreaseinnumbers.Iwouldtherefore,encourageallofyoutobookearly.Weexpectthedebatearoundthemajor regulatory initiatives and the emergence of certain dominant products to be lively to say the least.
