From the Principal

The mission of a school like Trinity On Sunday and Monday of this week I attended a NSW branch meeting of AHISA (the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia) of which, I am a member. The meeting was held at Barker College, a well-known and regarded independent school, established like Trinity, in the Anglican tradition. These meetings provide AHISA members with important political and educational updates from various sources but they also provide important opportunities to focus on core issues relevant to the heart and soul of independent education.

At Monday’s meeting the Headmaster of Barker College, Dr Rod Kefford welcomed members and of course, opened our meetings with a reflection and then prayer. Dr Kefford explained that he had first come across the reflection at a meeting with a group of Principals in Sydney and that he thought that it really resonated with those who had chosen to commit themselves to independent schools and a holistic, values-based education. The reflection is a poem-prayer that was written in honour of clergy who have passed away and some of the words of the poem have been attributed to Archbishop Oscar Romero, a Catholic priest who was assassinated as he celebrated mass in 1980.

The reflection goes…

A Future Not Our Own (also known as ‘The Long View’) It helps, now and then, to step back and take the long view. The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is beyond our vision.

We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work. Nothing we do is complete, which is another way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us.

No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness. No programme accomplishes the church’s mission. No set of goals and objectives includes everything.

This is what we are about: We plant seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects beyond our capabilities.

We cannot do everything and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for God’s grace to enter and do the rest.

We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders, ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own.

As Principal of a school like Trinity, I found this reflection very poignant as it captured simply, yet beautifully the essence of our work as a dynamic Christian learning community. As teachers, we do contribute significantly to the development of our young boys and girls into fine young men and women. We often start from scratch in this journey whilst at other times, we begin nurturing our students when they join the College at various other points. We do see enormous growth and development – and for teachers, this is often the greatest reward our profession offers – but our input, important as it is, is only one important ingredient in

the shaping of our society. The support of parents and the grace of God exists during their years at Trinity but carries on well beyond the College gates once our students graduate and leave us.

At a school like Trinity, we will remember with enormous pride the great people we have nurtured and contributed to, rather than simply their great academic or educational results. It is their strength of character and personality that will carry them through life much more so than anything else… We are prophets of a future not our own. And that is why what we do at Trinity is so important!

Staffing News Earlier this term, I received the resignation of Mr Christian Beattie from the academic staff, effective at the end of this term. Mr Beattie and his family have decided to relocate for family reasons to Queensland and I take this opportunity to thank Christian for his contribution to the College this year in the area of Hospitality and wish him and the family every best wish as they move north to Queensland.

In recent weeks I have turned my mind to 2014 planning and am pleased to announce the following staff movement relevant to this planning. From the beginning of the 2014 school year, Mr Chris O’Loan will take on the role of Head of the Wodonga Campus. Chris has accepted my invitation to transfer his leadership role to the Wodonga campus and I know that his skills and expertise will be maximised there. I thank Mr O’Loan for his work as Head of Junior School at the Albury campus over the last three years.

Mr Simon Fairall has coordinated the day-to-day programmes at the Wodonga campus very well for five years now and will next year join the staff at the Albury campus in a position of responsibility. I thank Simon for the hard work and commitment he has shown at the Wodonga campus and I am sure that he will enjoy the renewal of a new role at Albury next year.

Last weekend the College advertised locally and nationally for a new Head of Junior School at the Albury campus and I look forward to advising the College community of the details of this appointment later this term.

Great News – Trinity is successful in obtaining funding for Trade Training Centre! Earlier this year, Trinity and The Scots School Albury joined forces to put together a joint submission for the construction and development of a Trade Training Centre. It was agreed that this venture would be known as the Albury Independent Schools Trade Training Centre (AISTTC). Scots plan to upgrade their existing Hospitality facilities which will enable them to offer to local students a broader range of courses in this area and for Trinity, we planned to construct a facility which will enable us to offer Construction Carpentry and expand further our Engineering courses.

Late last week I received word that the joint or cluster application had been approved by DEEWR and that funding would be available for us to proceed with this project! This is a tremendous outcome and I will be meeting with the architect this week to progress our plans

for the facility. At this stage, the Trade Training Centre includes amongst other things two workshops, an e-learning room, a machine room, storage space and bathrooms for students.

I will keep everyone informed of this project but it is my understanding that one of the conditions of the funding is that the facility has to be constructed in the first half of 2014.

BIPSA Athletics On Tuesday, 20 August the BIPSA Athletics Championships were held at Alexandra Park in Albury. Although the day was bitterly cold, students representing the College did so with great energy and enthusiasm, recording many fantastic times, distances and heights across both track and field events. I am sure that there will be more detail in a report from the Head of Sport, Mr Clark later in this newsletter.

At the end of the day, the Trinity College team won convincingly the Schools’ aggregate trophy – well done to every member of the Trinity team! A fantastic effort in some trying circumstances!

Fathers’ Day Chapel Service Next Friday, 30 August the College will conduct a brief Chapel service for Fathers’ Day in the Multi-Purpose Hall at the Albury campus. All students from both campuses are welcome to attend with their fathers. The service will commence at 8am.

Trinity College Art Exhibition You will have read in the newsletter over the past few weeks that plans are well under way for our inaugural Trinity College Art Exhibition and Acquisitive Art Award to be held from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 September, 2013.

Now I can announce that we have secured established Albury artist Jo Davenport as our Feature Artist. Jo’s work is in demand through Melbourne and Sydney galleries and she is receiving recognition at a national and international level, so it’s quite a coup to have her give so generously of her time and expertise to promote our exhibition.

Our exhibition has an emphasis on selecting a variety of genres to reinforce the importance of the arts in our educational and collegial life and we believe this event will become a prestigious flagship for our College. I hope it will raise our profile in the arts and wider community and become a significant fundraiser for the school.

Our exhibition incorporates a $2000 Acquisitive Art Award and an $800 Emerging Artist Award, so if we have any budding or established artists in our school community, I encourage you to enter. The deadline has been extended to Friday, 30 August in response to artists’ requests.

The entries are now rolling in, but the success of this inaugural event will depend greatly on the support and assistance of the whole Trinity College Community! There are a variety of ways in which you can contribute that will help ensure the smooth running of all areas concerned with the staging of this event.

If you can help, please register your name and contact details on the back page of this Newsletter, place a tick where appropriate and return to the Front Office at either campus. I also ask that you diarise your commitment to help and we will contact you, to confirm times and duties closer to the event. Some volunteer positions will require brief training times.

Early on in the Bible there’s a story about a wrestling bout. A real smack down. And contender Number 2 was no less than the Creator of the Universe! You might have heard people say they’ve ‘struggled with God’, but Jacob did it for real and went toe-to-toe with the Almighty Himself. Up to this point he had lived a life of deception and lies. So, in God’s eyes, this midnight grapple was probably as much Jacob’s fight with his own identity as it was a physical brawl. Jacob came out of the struggle able to say, ‘I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been spared’.

Are you facing an identity crisis, struggling to come to terms with who you are? Well, this story gives us hope that, when we wrestle with such things, the struggle may take a lot out of us but in the end we’ll be stronger for going face-to-face with God, rather than turning our backs on Him. For those of us battling our past, God says ‘… if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here’. (2 Corinthians 5:17). If you are grappling with what others say about you, take heart, ‘For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.’ (2 Corinthians 10:18). For those who struggle to see any future, ‘…God’s powerful hand … will lift you up when the right time comes.’(1 Peter 5:6).

Campus Ski Trip

What a fantastic day we had last Friday! The sun was shining and the students had a great time learning and improving their skiing skills. It was great to see the children enjoying all levels of ski instruction, and importantly having a great time doing so.

I would like to thank the staff and parents that accompanied us on the trip, and hopefully, we are met with the same beautiful weather next year! Book Week Character Parade Last week the College sent home correspondence about the up and coming Character Parade on Friday 30 August at 10am. The event is aimed to help children celebrate the importance of books, and in particular, the character they fall in love with through stories.

After the Character Parade, the P&F will be running their annual Father’s Day Stall in the MPA.

I hope to see lots of parents in attendance to help us celebrate this event.

Sports News

Today is the conclusion of the PSSA interschool competition. Well done to all the Year 3 to 6 students who proudly represented themselves and the College. There were many stories of fine sportsmanship with students, often persevering in sports they have never played, in very strong competition. Thank you to all the families who were able to get along and show their support. Thanks also to the staff and Senior students who assisted with coaching and umpiring.

As we enter the last few rounds of basketball we wish all our teams all the best for their finals campaign. Students have been asked to give some thought to their intentions for next season and let their current coaches know. The new season begins Wednesday of Week 1, Term 4 and will finish at the end of Term 1, 2014. With the new season, a lot of students will play in an older age group. Your child will play in the older age group if they are turning the same age as their current age group in 2014. If your child is interested in playing, please let me know and I will endeavour to find a position in a suitable team. I also ask if any parents are interested in coaching to let me know also. On a day which was more suitable for the Winter Olympics, the Junior School athletics team represented the College at the BIPSA Athletics carnival with great pride. Their determination paid off and the College won a consecutive Champion School title. Thanks must go to the staff members who assisted on the day and the Year 10 students who helped with the running of events, which all helped make the day a success. Special mention must go to the students who graciously filled vacant positions in some of the events. We won the title, just, and this attitude was the difference…as was the fantastic support from our College families! Congratulations to all students, with special mention to:
