Honesty

We behave in a sincere, trustworthy, and truthful manner.

The character Trait for the month of November is Honesty. Parents/Guardians whenever possible please talk to your children about honesty. What is honesty? Honesty is telling the truth. Honesty is straightforward conduct.

Quote of the Week: “People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built.” Eleanor Roosevelt.

Parents, this year we are looking for FANTASTIC FALCONS. Fantastic Falcons are students who have demonstrated the character trait of the month. Let us know how your child has demonstrated honesty at home by filling out the form below. Once the form has been completed, please send it with your child to school. Your child’s name will be place in a ballot, which will be drawn at the end of the month. A winner will be selected from each division (Primary, Junior, and Intermediate) to win a prize. Let’s be Honest! Honesty is the best Policy! ____________________________ in ____________________________

On October 16 2015, at Ashton Meadows Public School, the grade 5/6 students from Ms. Sidenberg’s class ran the Student Vote Program. This program gives students the opportunity to vote, just like adults vote when they are 18. The purpose of this program is so that the students can learn how to vote at an early age. During the Student Vote election, the students voted just like in the real election, following the proper voting process. The gym was set up to look like a real polling station, and the students in charge of the election had specific jobs like the Deputy Returning Officer, Poll Clerks, and Scrutineers.

The Student Vote winner from our school’s Student Vote election was Bob Saroya from the Conservative party. This was the same as the result from the real election, where Bob Saroya won for our Markham-Unionville riding. Thanks to everyone who participated in the Student Vote election!

You might have heard your children talking about a campaign called We Scare Hunger, and asking to donate some non-perishable food items. Well the results were……we were extremely successful!

Here is some information about the campaign. The Me to We club organized this campaign to address the problem of hunger. A few hunger facts for you and your family:

In 2012 14% of food banks ran out of food.

38% of people who use food banks are children.

In Canada there are more than 800 food banks and 3000 food programs.

From 2008 to 2012 there was a 31% increase in the use of food banks.

1/5 parents said they skipped meals to make sure there was enough food for their children.

Last year, 1 in 12 Canadians who visited a food bank were turned away because of the lack of food. We Scare Hunger is a campaign that collects food items to send to food banks. Our school is donat-ing those food items to the Markham Food Bank.

Our campaign ran from October 22nd to November 2nd. We are very glad to say that many of the students from our school went trick-or-treating for non-perishable food items. If your child did that, please give them some praise because knocking on doors and asking for food items is pretty coura-geous. A shout out to all the students who did.

Our school goal was to reach 600 food items, and guess what? We reached and passed our goal! In total our school raised 640 food items! Because we reached our goal, Ms. Sidenberg is going to spray paint her hair purple for a day. We also had a competition where the class that raised the most food items earned a pizza party. The winner was Ms. Sidenbergs’ class with 200 food items. Ms. Freeman’s class was in second place, with 113 items, and Mr. Thomas’ class was in third place with 78 food items.

A huge thanks to everyone who donated items to our food drive- your food will help people in our com-munity who use the Markham Food Bank. Thanks for showing that Ashton cares!

Safe ArrivalSafe Arrival

Punctuality and attendance are very important to ensure your child does not miss impor-tant material being taught. It is critical that you call the school when your child is going to be absent or late so that the school can ensure all students are safe. If you do not call the school, the school will call the home, business, and then emergency numbers pro-vided to ensure your child is safe.

In the event that we are unable to contact anyone, it is Board policy that we con-tact the police. After office hours, the answering machine will pick up your calls and you can leave a message.

Allergies and FoodAllergies and Food When packing student lunches please remember that many students and staff have life-threatening allergies to nuts. Please ensure that all food is nut-free. In addition, we recom-mend that parents refrain from using peanut-butter substitutes as well. For more information on this, please see the Board website at www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca

Adults in the Yard or BuildingAdults in the Yard or Building All visitors to the school — in the yard or in the building — must report to the office first. If you are in the building or in the yard during school hours, you must have identification from the office or you will be asked to report there. This rule is in place to ensure the safety of each child at Ashton Meadows PS. Thank you for your continued support.

Thank You!Thank You! Thank you to all of the students who enthusiastically participated in the Grade 7 and 8 Haunted House, and to all of the parents who donated money to this Grade 8 Graduation Fundraiser! This experience, not only raised money for graduation, but it taught the grade 7 and 8 students invaluable "real life" skills such as teamwork, planning and working towards a deadline, and persevering when faced with last-minute obsta-cles. It was a great way to kick off our Gr. 8 graduation fundraising efforts!

Sincerely, The Grade 8 Staff and Students
