Dear Diary,
The other day, while waiting fora bus at the Vasant Vihar stand,I noticed that a boy was caughttravelling without a ticket by theflying squad of DTC. In a normalcase, the offense involves pay-ing a fine of R200. Since theoffender was carrying onlyR100 in his pocket, he surren-dered the said amount. Sincethe ticket checkers couldn’tissue a receipt for an amountlower than R200, they thoughtof a novel idea to teach the boya lesson without harassing himfurther. He was made to buy theR50 all route pass, valid fortravelling in all the buses for theday. The remaining R50 werereturned to him. According tome, two things can be learned
from this episode. One, not allpublic servants are corrupt.Nothing stopped the officials topocket the remaining R50 orthe entire R100 withthemselves and let off the boy.The second thing is that justiceneed not be done by the book. The boy was made to realisethat since the maximum oneneeds to spend for a daily allroute pass is R50, there’s nosense to travel without a ticketand pay a fine of R200. Ofcourse, the probability of anoffender being caught with lessmoney than the amount of thefine is low, which induces somepeople to travel without tickets. But they should still try to atleast carry R200 in theirpockets.

If you want to get in touchwith the diverse crafts ofIndia, then a walk through
the museums of SanskritiFoundation in the city mightprove to be the ideal fix foryou. The foundation housesthree museums — themuseum of Indian Terracotta,Indian Textiles and EverydayArt.
Most of the artworks arecreated by artisans invited byO.P. Jain, founder, SanskritiFoundation, at the premisesitself instead of transportingthem from different Indianstates. The museum isreplenished on a regular basiswith the creations of theseartisans. “The craftsmen canalso create a piece of artas per yourspecifications,” saysJolly Rohatagi, acrafts researcher, who will be
conducting a walk through themuseums on March 3.
While the terracottamuseum has pottery itemsfrom 14 states of the country, the everyday art museum hasobjects like lamps, pen holders,Gadolna (walker), lotas (watercontainers), rolling pins and
chowkis (low stools) fromacross India. At the Indiantextiles museum, you cango through different typesof yarns, such as bagh,
phulkari, kalamkari, khadi andtussar, as well as learn aboutembroidery techniques.
“Earlier, it was onlyforeigners who would visitmuseums and culturalheritage sites, but we weresurprised when we gotmany youngstersinterested in the SanskritiMuseum,” says NamitaAnand, founder of GetAlive, which hasorganised the walk.
