In a normal case, the offense involves pay- ing a fine of R200. Since the offender was carrying only R100 in his pocket, he surren- dered the said amount. Since the ticket checkers couldn’t issue a receipt for an amount lower than R200, they thought of a novel idea to teach the boy a lesson without harassing him further. He was made to buy the R50 all route pass, valid for travelling in all the buses for the day. The remaining R50 were returned to him. According to me, two things can be learned from this episode. One, not all public servants are corrupt. Nothing stopped the officials to pocket the remaining R50 or the entire R100 with themselves and let off the boy. The second thing is that justice need not be done by the book. The boy was made to realise that since the maximum one needs to spend for a daily all route pass is R50, there’s no sense to travel without a ticket and pay a fine of R200. Of course, the probability of an offender being caught with less money than the amount of the fine is low, which induces some people to travel without tickets. But they should still try to at least carry R200 in their pockets. D.R.Gulati Chetna Dua [email protected] I f you want to get in touch with the diverse crafts of India, then a walk through the museums of Sanskriti Foundation in the city might prove to be the ideal fix for you. The foundation houses three museums — the museum of Indian Terracotta, Indian Textiles and Everyday Art. Most of the artworks are created by artisans invited by O.P. Jain, founder, Sanskriti Foundation, at the premises itself instead of transporting them from different Indian states. The museum is replenished on a regular basis with the creations of these artisans. “The craftsmen can also create a piece of art as per your specifications,” says Jolly Rohatagi, a crafts researcher, who will be conducting a walk through the museums on March 3. While the terracotta museum has pottery items from 14 states of the country, the everyday art museum has objects like lamps, pen holders, Gadolna (walker), lotas (water containers), rolling pins and chowkis (low stools) from across India. At the Indian textiles museum, you can go through different types of yarns, such as bagh, phulkari, kalamkari, khadi and tussar, as well as learn about embroidery techniques. “Earlier, it was only foreigners who would visit museums and cultural heritage sites, but we were surprised when we got many youngsters interested in the Sanskriti Museum,” says Namita Anand, founder of Get Alive, which has organised the walk. Khugsal, a Delhiite and a self-trained photographer, has themed his collection around the vignettes of life from the city. “I have grown up in the city and it has always influenced me, so I captured some of the moments from the life fleeting by,” says Khugsal. According to the artist, he has a passion for interpreting beauty in ordinary things. “My work is mostly targeted at the city’s youth who still aren’t aware about the existence of places like Agrasen ki Baoli, which is right at the centre of Connaught Place.
