SECTOR COMMENTARY BANKING & FINANCE

Market changes in thelast 12 monthsThe last 12 months have seen someinteresting changes occur in the bankingmarket. In the lending sector there was ashift in demand from the residentiallending market to the corporate/businessbanking sector. Retail banking shifted frombeing seen as purely a service function tobeing a significant vehicle for thedistribution of bank products. Investmentbanking experienced increased movementand activity which impacted salary levelsin certain areas. The wealth managementindustry continued to flourish with both theWM divisions of the banks expanding andboutique practices and franchisesexpanding their market presence.

In the residential lending industry a lack ofconfidence and the concern over interestrate rises impacted the housing market inearly 2005 and subsequently dampenedthe demand for housing mortgage finance.As a result the previously extensivedemand for residential lendingprofessionals cooled slightly with fewerrequirements for processing anddocumentation staff. Many organisationsreduced their contingent workforce toreflect reduced work levels and slowed therecruiting of permanent staff. Despite this,the need for individuals with strong creditassessment skills continued and salaries inthis area remained strong as a result.There was also a tendency for mortgagebrokers to seek employed status with thelarger financial institutions as returns for anindependent broker decreased.

However Corporate and Businessbanking experienced the opposite trend.High levels of business confidenceresulted in increased demand for businessfinance and both the banks and thespecialist financiers focused on theirbusiness sourcing activities, recruitingBusiness Development professionals toaggressively chase new deals. No longeris the business banker seen as a “farmer”,they also need to be proactive salespeople contributing to business growth.Credit analysts with commercialexperience are in high demand andincreasingly Business Bankers areexpected to have credit analyst skills.

Investment banking saw a welcomedincrease in activity as the Australianmarket leapt to new highs. However thehuman resources impact was not sopositive with a significant lack of juniorlevel staff created by the low numbers oftrainees brought into the industry over thelast few years. Corporate actions,settlements and back office processing ingeneral have seen, and continue toexperience, a shortage of experiencedcandidates. At a more senior level,demand for analysts in all areas of theindustry have been strong, particularly inthe area of risk.

The last year saw growth in the WealthManagement industry with financialplanning utilised more widely. As a result,the demand for qualified planners hasleapt with both banks and boutiqueplanning firms looking to increase theirprofile. The demand for support staff isalso high, with experienced paraplannersin very high demand and their salariesincreasing significantly as a result.Compliance is high on the wealthmanagement agenda and with FSRAreforms requiring much closer supervisionof planners’ work, some industrycommentators feel that the pendulum ofcontrol has swung too far and thedemands for documentation have anegative impact on the planners ability toprovide fast effective advice.

The focus on retail banking networks asvaluable distribution chains has led to anincrease in the recruitment of customerservice and sales staff to work inbranches. The traditionally high turnoverof tellers continued, particularly in citycentre areas.

As a result of superannuation fund choice,many companies have been increasingtheir business development functions andthere is an anticipated increase inadministration functions as people changefunds and demand more information onthe performance of their currentsuperannuation provider.

Changes to employerrecruitment practicesOver the last 12 months there have beenseveral changes to employer recruitmentpractices, the beginnings of which we sawthe previous year. Candidate shortagesresulted in a need for employers toproactively differentiate and highlight thebenefits of working for their organisation.In the current recruitment market, it is nolonger effective to simply rely on employerbranding alone to attract candidates.

FSRA resulted in a continued requirementfor qualified candidates for front line rolesand this impacted both recruitment andinitial training requirements for rolespreviously regarded as junior roles.

Background checking became the normfor major financial institutions and todayincludes ASIC, police and employmentbackground checking.

Finally, increased centralisation ofresourcing functions led to both controlledcosts and improved processes.

Advice for candidatesIncreased regulation of the financialservices industry has led to relevantqualifications becoming an essentialprerequisite for many roles rather thanmerely being desirable, which waspreviously the case. Relevant practicalexperience is always invaluable andkeeping abreast of product developmentsand legislative changes is essential.Candidates wanting to work in businessdevelopment will need to demonstratetheir sales ability with proven results andideally established referral networks.
