KEEPING IN TOUCH DURING LOCKDOWN week 15
Dear Parents/Carers and children,
In this weeks newsletter, you will find some more examples of the fantastic 24 Word
stories that we asked pupils to write as part of National Writing Day. These stories have
been written by some of the pupils who have returned to Normandy. I’m sure you will
agree that they are very imaginative and fun to read. Here is one example:
‘One day a virus came. Then school closed, goodbye friends! We are in school again but
metres are hard to measure. Go away virus!’
I was impressed with all of the stories but this one particularly impressed me because it
reminded me why I do this job and how much I am looking forward to the children
returning in September.
We have a new challenge for pupils this week - Design a toilet for use on the moon! Use
your science, DT and English skills to design, draw, create and invent a ‘Lunar Loo’. Good
luck, I am looking forward to seeing your entries!
We also announce the winners of our Bird Box/ Photography competition. How did you
do? We received lots of brilliant entries - thank you!
SEPTEMBER RETURN
I am sure that you have heard on the news that the Government guidance for coming
back to school in September has been released. I would like to reassure you all as
parents and children that we are working through this to ensure a smooth return of ALL
our wonderful children in the Autumn.
KEEP SAFE EVERYBODY and have
a super weekend.

This week we have another competition for you all to get involved in.
NASA has launched a competition to design a toilet
for astronauts to use on the Moon.
Going to the loo in space is not particularly
comfortable for astronauts, and the last time
humans landed on the Moon in 1972 they had to
wear big adult nappies!
For the next mission to the Moon in 2024 Nasa
wants to do things a bit differently.
So they launched the ‘Lunar Loo Challenge’, which is asking for people to send
in their design ideas for a toilet which will work for male and female astronauts,
in space, and on the surface of the Moon.
‘Nasa is looking for a next-generation device that is smaller, more efficient, and
capable of working in both microgravity and lunar gravity’ said Nasa.
So, do you think you can rise to the challenge?
How to enter:
Design a toilet that astronauts can use in space. Remember to think about
important factors such as Gravity, Size of the toilet, Materials to use.
Write up your method and draw a diagram of your design.
You may even wish to build a model of your design.
Get creative! We can’t
wait to see your entries!

WELL DONE to everyone who took part.
We received some OUTSTANDING entries.

To celebrate the 72nd birthday of the NHS and to thank all of the nurses, doctors, porters, cleaners and
wonderful NHS staff, on Sunday 5th July at 5pm, people across the country will be taking part in another
huge round of applause.
Public buildings will be lit up in blue for the NHS, including landmarks like Blackpool Tower, the Royal
Albert Hall, the Shard in London and the Wembley Arch.
On July 4, people will be asked to put a light in their windows in remembrance of those lost to Covid-19.
History of the NHS
The National Health Service was created with the idea that good
healthcare should be available for everyone. It was founded on
July 5, 1948. The three core principles were:
1. That it meet the needs of everyone
2. That it be free at the point of delivery
3. That it be based on clinical need, not ability to pay
Normandy Primary School pupils have celebrated our wonderful NHS throughout the pandemic. Here is a
reminder of the fantastic video that we made to say Thank You!

Callum, 3J and Bella, RD have been to the farm to learn
about the different animals.
They saw all sorts of farm
animals and learnt about the
foods that these animals eat.
They were also brave enough
to feed some of the animals
that they saw. Well done!
Zara, 3K has been working really
hard at home doing home
learning activities and has been
taking long walks in the park
with her family for some
exercise and fresh air. Fantastic
work!
Niwayne, 2H has been writing some fantastic
stories whilst at home. He loves writing and
sharing his creative skills. Excellent work!
William, 4M has written a great poem
called ‘Animals I love’.
Not only is William’s poem factual, it’s
also very funny too. Well done William!
Kenzie, 3J has been doing a science experiment this
week. He cut off the spring onion ends and put them in
water. It is now day four and they have started to grow
already! Kenzie is keeping a diary of what is happening.
Fantastic work Kenzie, I can’t wait to see what hap-
pens!
Finley, 3L and his family took a trip to the beach to watch
the sunrise. They researched the weather conditions,
what time the sun would be rising and from what
direction and took some fantastic photos and made some
wonderful memories. Brilliant work!

The Department for Education has updated
guidance for parents and carers about keeping
children safe online.
It is important to have regular conversations about
staying safe online and to encourage children to
speak to you if they come across something worrying online.
These resources provide guidance for parents and carers to keep children safe
online. They will, amongst other things, support you to talk to your child about
a range of online safety issues, set up home filtering in a child-friendly way and
set up age-appropriate parental controls on digital devices.
You can find more information and guidance by clicking here.
Apps to help children stay safe online
The BBC have a website and app called Own It.
The website has a lot of content for children to
help them navigate their online lives, and the
free smartphone app comes with a special
keyboard which can intervene with help and
support in the moments that children need it the
most. It can be downloaded for free in the
Google Paly Store and Apple App Store.
SafeToNet is an app for parents to help them
safeguard their children from online risks like
cyberbullying and sexting, whilst respecting their
child’s rights to privacy. The SafeToNet Foundation is providing UK families with
free access to 1 million licences during coronavirus.
