Term 2 is nearly at an end. It seems to have flown by. There have been so many fantastic events in our busy school community.
To round out the Semester we have Reports coming home this week.
Please read through the information about reports from Miss Stockton our K-12 Curriculum Coordinator.
I would encourage all students to take some time at the end of the term to reflect on what has gone before and plan for improvement, development and growth in Semester Two.
I trust everyone will have a safe a happy break.

Preparations are well under way for the Middle School STEAM Challenge Day this Friday 30 June. Did you know that Flint, Michigan, in the US recently suffered a catastrophic destruction of its water supply. How would we get fresh water? In Christchurch, NZ, earthquakes destroyed many homes. How would we house those people? In 2004 the Boxing Day Tsunami destroyed much infrastructure in Indonesia. How would we get help to those who need it? These are the kinds of real world issues that can be addressed through application of STEAM; Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. We will spend the day in teams working on solutions to challenges designed to encourage creative and collaborative skills. It will be up to the team to work together, develop ideas, create the ‘solution’, make it work and present it to the world! We will be looking for outstanding creativity, effort, design, teamwork, workmanship and presentation. Get ready for a challenge, Years 5-8, because here it comes! Don’t forget to get your Sausage Sizzle order in by Tuesday.

ACADEMIC REPORTS In the next few days your child will be bringing home their Half Yearly Report. With the change to our
school operating system we have also updated our report templates and we believe that these new
reports will provide you with more detail on your child’s progress.
In primary school every subject will now have course outcomes listed. These will highlight for you the
skills and knowledge required in that course and your child’s current achievement in those areas.
In secondary school we will be providing you with the results of each of your child’s assessment tasks and
their grade for this point in the course. It is important to note when looking at assessment marks that you
also look at the weighting of each task that was provided in the assessment booklet given out at the start
of the year. As the weighted results are what contribute to your child’s overall grade for this semester.
The table below highlights the Common Grade Scale as set by NESA (NSW Educational Standards
Authority, the new name for the Board of Studies). Generally speaking, students in secondary receive
numerical marks for tasks. This table also shows the numerical range that is attached to each grade
descriptor.
Report comments are the best indicator of your child’s progress. They will reveal the areas your child
have succeeded in as well as strategies for how they can improve on these current results. At OCS we take
the process of writing your child’s reports seriously and want them to provide a snapshot of your child’s
current progress in school. Please use them to prompt discussion with your child where you can
encourage your child on how they have grown since the last reports. And work through strategies to help
them to continue their educational journey successfully.
Parent Teacher Meetings round out the report process and these are held early next term to enable you
to meet with your child’s teachers to discuss their progress and strategies for further academic growth for
the remainder of the year. Parent Teacher meetings will be held on the 1st and 2nd August Term3. We look
forward to seeing you there.
Please enjoy reading the reports and if you have any questions please contact the school. Miss S Stockton

We have had three very blessed young people chosen to be part of Orange Aero Club’s Junior Training School. Caleb Cairns (Year 9), TJ Childs (Year 8) and Siri Flemming (Year 7) applied for entry to the course and were three of only 20 students chosen. They have enjoyed learning more about aircraft, the skills involved in flying and the potential careers paths in aviation. This course went for eight weeks, one night a week, and involved a combination of theory and practical work, and hands-on inspections of a variety of different aircraft. Some highlights for the three students were discovering how airplanes worked and the mechanics of their engines; learning about navigation and completing a flight plan; and practicing the use of the radio with the specific tech-niques and procedures involved. The unanimous highlight of the course was flying in a Jabiru aircraft and actually piloting the plane for a few minutes! Caleb, TJ and Siri will receive their course completion certificates at the end of this term. Thank you to Orange Aero Club for making this amazing experience possible and congratulations to all three students.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL Report by Geordie Errington
Orange Christian
School performed
‘High School
Musical’ at the
Orange Civic
Theatre on the 9th
and 10th of June.
It was an
unbelievable and
entertaining
experience for the
cast. There was
often a
complication
throughout our
practices but a
solution wasn’t far behind. The cast worked
hard together on scenes and songs, you could say ‘we’re all in this together’.
All that hard work payed off after two months of practice. We
managed to present an amazing, mouth dropping show called
'High School Musical'!
The cast rehearsed during holidays, weekends and afternoons at
school on Tuesdays and Fridays. The best thing about rehearsing
in the holidays is you can see your class mates. While we
rehearse lines or songs, you feel proud to remember the lines
once you know them off by heart.
The most difficult line for me was 'no problemo' but with some help (from Google translator) I managed to
pronounce the word fluently. The best thing about the production was to finally get on the stage. The
performance was a memorable time for every one!
A big thank you to my fellow
cast members, the backstage
crew and the staff especially Mr
Cooper, Mrs Giger and Mr
Moxey for your fantastic
support and encouragement.

LEADERSHIP OCS Students Collect for Red Shield Appeal Over the 29 – 30 May over 40 OCS students, parents and staff hit the streets of Orange to collect money for the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. Altogether the students collected approx. $2500 from the residents in our areas to support the Salvation Army. This was a wonderful contribution and we were pleased we could be part of this community effort.

money for the Orange Christian School showed their colours on Tuesday 23 May in support of the Cancer Council. Our primary students showed their artistic flair with crazy and unique hairstyles while our secondary stu-dents pulled on the Blue and Yellow. Meanwhile our secondary students donned their blue and yellow. Many of our senior students showed their creative dress sense by combining football socks with tutus and capes making for a very colourful playground. The Student Leadership team also hosted a Biggest Morning Tea for the staff which was enjoyed by all. Altogether we raised over $1200 for the Cancer Council with our efforts. Great work OCS!!
