he new school term has got off to a rocky start for some of our Chetnole sixth formersattending The Gryphon School in Sherborne. Sadly, and not without some degree of frustrationNews from the Villages

There is a old country sayingthat "enough ice in November to bear aduck the rest of the winter will be mudand muck", we seem to be getting themud & muck now so it will beinteresting to see how Novembershapes up. As I write this there is stillsome silage to be made and maizelooks like being a month away fromharvesting , one of the worst summersin memory.

A very happy time for the Foxfamily  with the christening of LoganHunter Fox, little brother to big sisterTilly.

The Harvest Festival   Service at StMary’s was well attended. The servicewas taken by the vicar and wasfollowed by a bring and share lunchat  the cheese house, Church FarmHouse. Our thanks to Julie & JonnyGibbs and all those who decorated thechurch and helped with the food andthe flowers in the church and all this onone of the few fine days of the month.

The Batcombe monthly coffeemorning will be on first Wednesday ofNovember at Lilian Newmans,Stonecroft, at 11am

HOPE YOU CAN COME

Well yet anothermonth has whizzed by and I stillhaven't picked a single blackberry; allthe apples on my trees havemiraculously disappeared - they werethere the last time I looked in, er,August and now the lanes in our villageare filling up with mud and mushed-upleaves again.   Where is 2012 going? Take note, walkers, riders and cyclists,of Sue Morgan's plea, now the days aredarker, and keep safe.

Welcome to the Chapman family whohave moved into the Rectory inMelbury Bubb. We hope you will bevery happy in that beautiful hamlet. Weare also saddened to learn of thedeaths of Lyn Darley's mother of MillLane; Harold Jenkinson of Neals Lane;Ron Goslin  also of Neals Lane and MrsBashford of Hamlet and we send all oftheir families our condolences.

We at Tebbatt Towers have beenextremely road-safety conscious bypurchasing a gleaming white car sobright it is seen for miles and milesexcept that after a few days in Chetnoleit's now a lovely shade of coffee. Should have known better.  No pointwashing it now until Spring.   Welldone to the Chuckers for theircommunity award - read Gordon'sreport later on - and for putting littleChetnole on the map.   Have a greattime this month spoiling yourselves atthe various epicurial delights on offer inthe village, along with the retailtherapy of the Christmas Craft Fair andsee you next time.

The Chetnole & Leigh GardenClub would like to say "Thank you, Simon"to Simon James (says Linda Carroll) forprotecting their tree from cattle.   It isplanted in the Pike's field which is used forthe annual flower show but at other timeshas cows grazing.  It would not last long ifnot fenced from such hungry ladies, so weare very grateful for the kind act!  Look outfor Linda's latest works on show at the OldSchool Gallery in Yetminster from 1November.

Sue Morgan says, "A Great Big ThankYou!! Once again the kindness andgenerosity of the village was demonstratedat the SSAFA Charity Coffee Morning . Wetook a grand total of £265.40! The usualsincere thanks to those who donated thelovely sale items, helped on the day and toall the wonderful people who attended andopened their purses so widely.  The Rafflehamper Ticket no 14 (drawn by our PostOffice Manager Robert) was won by BeckyLeaning from Shaftesbury."

Chetnole Playing FieldThe sub committee who look after the

wonderful asset that Chetnole has in ourPlaying Field is looking for a few morepeople to join.  If you feel you could offer asmall amount of your time for occasionalmaintenance and bi-monthly meetingsthen please call Nigel Bray on 01935872233 for more information.

Chetnole Fuel GroupThere are currently eighty four

members signed up to the Chetnole FuelGroup and the next delivery for fuel in thevillage will be in the week commencing21st November.   It can provide you with aminimum order of five hundred litres of oil

each quarter at a more competitive price asa direct result of the sheer bulk amount offuel that is delivered in one go to our village.  John Sanford advises that we should topup our tanks imminently to avoid the bigrise in fuel before Christmas and the coldweather months.  If you would like to jointhis operation run by John  then please ringhim on 01935 872973.

Autumn Molly's Christening at StPeter's Church

A Big thank you to everyone who had ahand in the christening of our latest granddaughter, Autumn Molly at St Peter's onSunday 30 September.  It was wonderful tosee so many friends and relatives there tocelebrate her christening it made it a veryspecial and memorable occasion for thewhole family.  Phillippa, her mum, ourdaughter, is known to many in the village asa previous member of the production teamof the magazine; though currently workingin Singapore,  she relocates with herfamily  to Melbourne in the New Year.  Especial thanks go to Simon Brignall andStephanie Fripp for their work  and to allthose who "chipped in" on the day to makethe event go so smoothly.  Many Thanks.

Chetnole Church NewsFirst the good news. Our stalwart band

of cyclists on their annual day out on theDorset Historic Churches Trust Ride andStride event raised the magnificent sum of£483.50 from their sponsors. With theaddition of Gift Aid this should raise theamount to over the magic £500 mark. Welldone to all concerned. As is usual, half ofthe amount raised, less Gift Aid is donatedto St Peter's Church, Chetnole

Now for the not so good news Duringfurther in depth work on the church wall, ithas been found that due to tree rootgrowth in the two years since the originalquotation, considerable further repair workwill be required at a cost of nearly £8000making further fund raising an urgentnecessity. So if you haven't contributed todate, now is your chance !!. (See below)

David Gough

St Peter's Church, Churchyard Wall  During  the

Quinquennial inspection ofthe Church and Churchyardin 2010 it was noted thatthe churchyard wall, whereit abuts the public highwaywas in a poor state ofrepair.

Quotations wereinvited from severalcontractors, and the lowestwas from Messrs Ellis & Co.Stonemasons of SheptonMallett. Incidentally thecompany is highly regardedby our Church Architect.

Due to the initialslowness in raising fundsfor the task, there hasbeen a small annualpercentage increase in thecosts quoted and workeventually started at theend of September last.

Unfortunately, in theinterim, tree roots haveproliferated in the wallstructure causing extensivedamage, leading to theincrease in costs.  As thewall, like the church, is alisted structure (Grade 2*)we are constrained by thetype of stone required forthe wall repair itself, not tomention expensivehamstone for the capstoneson top and the associatedspecification for the limemortar mix.

One of the anomaliesthat has arisen is that anywork on the churchstructure itself is VATrefundable. Churchyardwalls are specificallyexcluded which means thatwe have to find the sum of£6919 for VAT alone

To clarify a questionthat has arisen regardingdonations to the churchfunds, any  that specify

"Church Fabric Fund" or"Churchyard Wall Fund" areplaced in accounts of thatname and are "ring fenced"and  thus can only beutilised for specific taskscovered by the accountstitle, therefore nothing canbe taken for admin, insurance etc, etc..

If you have any furtherquestions regarding theabove or any other aspectof our parish church, please do not hesitate tocontact any member of thePCC. If they don't know, they will know of someonewho does !!

Dorset Community Action - Best Kept Village Competition 2012Janet and I attended the

2012 Dorset Best VillageAwards evening at Corfe Mullenon 21 September, by invitationfrom the organisers, DorsetCommunity Action and theirsponsors.  Chetnole Chuckerswon the Runners Up prize in

"The Peoples' Project" category, for establishing a successfulDorset village Boules Club. The first prize went ShiptonGorge, for setting up a village pub owned and run bythe community - definitely aworthy winner and a hard act to follow!

Chetnole did not win a prize for the Best [Kept] Village, but was informallycommended by the judges for its general tidiness and lovely playing field.  I wasimpressed by the fact that in reviewing all55 entries in  the competition, the panel ofjudges travelled a total of 700 miles aroundDorset! Well, somebody has to do it....

The  club has  donated the £50 prizemoney to St. Peter's Church Wall fund.

November should be aquiet month when the hectic activity ofthe summer is over (well we had thehectic activity even if we didn’t havethe summer!) and before the shoppingand singing of Christmas has begun. On the other hand, there still seems tobe plenty going on so do not curl up forwinter just yet!

As the evenings draw in you mighthave a bit of time to search for that lastbit of jumble for the jumble sale in theVillage Hall on Saturday 3 November. Iam hoping to recycle the curtains I gotat the jumble sale 2 years ago for somethat fit the windows in our new house. They still have plenty of life left in themand I am proud to have been theirguardian for a couple of years andknow they will find a really good home!Proceeds for the sale will go to theVillage Hall and anybody with anyjumble should contact Sandy Burton(01935 873522) or Morag Orchard(01963 210619).

New to Leigh, we welcome Laura,Des, Phoebe and Lottie the dog toChurch Farm Cottages. I know that youwill all make them welcome as youalways do and they will quickly feel partof the village.

A small word of caution; whilst onholiday we had our very useful trolleystolen from our garden. Our own faultfor not making sure it was nailed down!Talking to other people, we are notalone so do please keep an eye out foryourselves and each other. Almosteveryone is honest and genuine and afew people are not!

Join us for some festive singing forChristmas see p35 for more information.

Hugh MatthewsLower Totnell Farm in Leigh was

sold at auction on 25 May. Therewas some excitement around thevillage because the successfulbidder for the farmhouse andadjoining 50 acres was bidding bytelephone from Croatia. So thestory went around that the bidderwas Croatian, rather than simply onholiday in Croatia. The farm hadbelonged to Hugh Matthews andhad been in his family forsomething of the order of 120 years. At one time Lower Totnell was partof the much larger Totnell Farmwhere his great grandfather HughRussell Cannon lived. Hugh, betterknown to many as Hughie, lived atLower Totnell for his

entire lifeuntil hedied, peacefully,in his sleepaged 78 on27 Octoberlast year.

Hughtook overthe farmwhen hisownfather

died in 1957. He was then24 and was saddled with substantialdeath duties, so life was asignificant uphill struggle for someyears until they were paid off. Hehad left Fosters School at the age offourteen to work full time alongsidehis father. Over the years hebranched out into agriculturalhaulage in a small way buteventually was able to buy hisdream lorry, a 16 ton Mercedes

fl

atbed, and eventually disposedof his dairy herd but then, soonafter his mother died in 1983, hesuffered his first heart attack.Following a second attack in 1988,he was compelled to give up drivingthe lorry.

Hugh had been a member of theSherborne branch of the YoungFarmers’ Club and with DerekCooper was a founder member ofthe Hilfield and Hermitage branch inwhich he took a very active role, organising dances and other socialevents as well as participatingenthusiastically in tug of warcontests. As a boy he had learnedto ring bells, and continued to ringthroughout his life, first in Leigh andthen after he had recovered frombypass surgery in 1989, he taughtringers at Henstridge and then rangregularly at Mapperton where hehad friends and where he donatedthe cost of two bells (he waspresent at the bell foundry inWhitechapel when they were cast). So when it came to his funeral itseemed most natural that it shouldtake place there, where he was alsoburied.

St Andrew’s Church, LeighThank you to all those who helped

in any way to make the HarvestService and lunch held on 23September such a success.    As aresult we have been able to send FarmCrisis Network a cheque for £398.40which is a great result.

At our recent PCC meeting JohnParks, our churchwarden, said he hadbeen approached with regards to aclock being installed (financed by adonation) on the south and west sidesof the church tower.    The PCC hasdecided to ask the whole communityof Leigh what they think of this ideabefore we agree that it may goahead.   We are placing a petition inLeigh Village Stores and if you agreethat a clock should be installed, please would you sign by31 December 2012. It’s a sure sign thatsummer is over when the

“Posties” don their winterapparel! – I must admitthat I am always amazedthat despite the mostinclement of weathersthere is always a cheerfulsmile accompanying thedelivery of post – for me,as an ex townie, itcertainly adds to theattractiveness of villagelife.

I understand that therecent whiskey tastingorganised by Jim andCarole at the White Hartwas a great successalthough it is fair to saythat my neighbour, whowas in attendance, lookedslightly the worse forwear the next day.

Rumours abound withregard to the future useof the store, old postoffice and, soon to bevacated, hairdressers inSunnyside – a SpaGrocers has beenmentioned as has part ofit reopening as a TakeAway Food restaurant – ifyou know anythingpositive please let theWVN know and put us allout of our misery!

The Yeovil ChamberChoir are making a firstvisit to the village -details are elsewhere inthe magazine – I have

heard themand theymake a veryprofessionalsound so Iam sure

that if you are ableto go along you will enjoyyourselves.

All seems quiet on theTravellers Site issue butplease keep an eye on theDorset for You website asthings may start movingagain soon.

Having recentlyrekindled my interest incooking I was wonderingif it might be good toinclude the occasional

“local” recipe in the WVNcolumns. If you have aDorset favourite drop mea line or leave the recipein the WVN letterbox inthe Oak House Stores,Yetminster so that we canall try it out.

Garth Hentley, theYetminster FairAssociation Chairpersonhas indicated that therehave been a couple of

volunteers following hisappeal for help and forwhich he is grateful butthat further assistance isstill needed so pleasecontact him on 01935873239 or [email protected] ifyou are consideringgetting involved.

Finally a plea of myown – it would be good touse this column towelcome newcomers tothe village and topublicise what is going onetc. and I need your helpto do this – if you have(or know of someone whohas) a special birthday orevent or have hadsomething nice happenthen please let me knowso that we can all sharethe moment – obviously ifyou win the lottery, andas I will be your new bestfriend, we’ll just keep thatto ourselves!

Yetminster & Ryme IntrinsecaParish Council Meeting 19 Sept

The meeting was attended by 8councillors, the Clerk, CCllr Bevan, DCllrLawrence and four members of the public.

New Councillor. It was agreed to co optMr Richard Kellar onto the Council.

Neighbourhood Plan DCllr Lawrenceraised the subject of a Neighbourhood Planinvolving all the villages. It was agreed thatthis was worth pursuing and Cllr Willsagreed to follow it up.

Traveller’s Site. This appears to havebecome dormant. CCllr Bevan agreed toinvestigate the current situation.

Pot Holes. Some discussion was held onthe pot hole problem. CCllr Bevan said thatin view of the number of complaintsYetminster had a high priority for repair.

Planning. There were no contentiousPlanning applications.

Website. This is now up and running(www.yetminsterparishes.gov.uk) but ideasfor additional information andimprovements are always welcome. Someimprovements were agreed with the viewthat the website is mainly there to informoutsiders or newcomers what the villagehas to offer. If you have any thoughtsplease contact the Clerk. (Tel No/email onwebsite!)

St Andrew’s Hall The Parochial ChurchCouncil is struggling to keep St Andrew’sHall going and is looking into what thefuture holds. One proposal is that theParish Council takes it on as a communityhall. This was discussed and it becameapparent that the Council would need a lotmore information before coming to anydecision. A letter with these questions hasbeen sent to the PCC. This is a long termproject and no decisions are likely in theshort term or without further consultationwithin the village.

Post Office Subsequent to the MeetingI had a letter from Oliver Letwin our MPwho has been informed by The Post Officeauthorities that they are confident that weshould have a post office back in the not toodistant future. D G Gould

Yeovil Chamber Choir concertOn Saturday 24 November, Yeovil

Chamber Choir will be giving a concertat 7.30pm in St. Andrew's Church. Thechoir began in 1993, and has twomembers from the village, but has notvisited Yetminster before. This seriousomission is about to be rectified, and wehope this concert will be well supportedso that we can come again in the future.

The varied programme of mainly16th and 17th century music will includepieces by William Byrd, ClaudioMonteverdi, Henry Purcell, Thomas Luisde Victoria, and several othercomposers. The choir will beaccompanied by a string quartet whowill also play some instrumental piecesfrom the same period. The general

theme will be celebratory, and themusic should appeal to a wide audience.

Tickets are £10 to include intervalwine and refreshments, and areavailable from Oak House Stores or fromRay Drewett on 01935 873719. Ticketswill also be available at the door.

Preserving our Green LanesReaders may remember the public

meeting held in Leigh Village Hall on 23 Aug2011 at which Oliver Letwin and I briefedlocal residents about applications made byoff-road driving clubs for three local greenlanes to be opened to vehicular use. It hasbeen suggested that it is time to updatereaders on what has happened since.

Following application by Leigh ParishCouncil, Longbridge and Bolters Droves, onwhich vehicular use was already permitted, were downgraded to footpaths by DorsetCounty Council. The motor vehicle lobbyappealed against the decision and it waseventually overturned after a three daylong Planning Inquiry, despite a robustdefence by DCC and Leigh Parish Council.Sadly these Droves therefore remain opento vehicular use and the Parish Council isconsulting with DCC about ways ofprotecting them from damage so seriousthat walkers and riders cannot enjoy theiruse.

Bailey Drove’s case, along with that offive other byways in Dorset, was the subjectof Judicial Review by a High Court judge. Many local residents contributedgenerously to the Fighting Fund set up todefray the costs of defending our positionand I’m happy to report that judgement

was made in our favour in late September.Assuming that the judgement is notoverturned on appeal, Bailey Drove hasbeen saved from use by motor vehicles.

Seiver’s Lane is now classified as arestricted byway and cannot therefore beused by motor vehicles. Leigh ParishCouncil believes that it should actually beno more than a bridleway and isconsidering what action to take in light ofthe findings of the Planning Inquiry forLongbridge Drove (see above).

For obvious reasons use of these greenlanes for agricultural purposes is permitted, whatever their classification.

Alastair DennisChairman,

Local Green Lanes Protection Group.

Gentle Yoga… and itreally is!

Once a weekon a Wednesdaymorning in theLeigh Village Halla group of ladieswho are far fromfit and, in somecases, healthy, gather to carryout (very) GentleYoga under the watchful eye ofour excellent teacher, Angela.

We take things very easily -no legs over shoulders orimpossible poses for us! Welearn to treat our bodies withrespect, study different ways ofmoving and breathing and thentake time at the end of thesession to sink into blissfulrelaxation – sometimes evenfalling asleep.

Our little group ranges in agefrom 27 to 87 and some folk are

fitter than others. We can carry outthe lesson whileseated andothers have to sitoccasionally.Angela is a caringand carefulteacher, aware ofrestrictions andindividualproblems, takingtime to guide usthrough theexercises. If you

think you couldn’t manage whatwe do, think again. Come alongand join us, if only for a “taster”session, and see how gentleyoga can be. We all creak andgroan at times, but feel muchbetter after Angela has put usour through very, very gentlepaces. If you are interested inGentle Yoga please call Angelaon 01963 210367

On the first day ofthe Battle of theSomme, 1 July

1916, the 2nd MiddlesexRegiment started with 24officers and 650 men. Bydusk only one officer and50 men remained.

One of the 600 soldierswho died was GeorgeEdward Picton Davis ofthe 2nd Middlesex – myuncle.George was born on 24March 1897, the eldest ofthree boys. The familylived in London andGeorge went to LatymerUpper School. From storiestold to me I know he wasvery tall (6’3” or 6’4”) andlooked older than hisyears. It was the habit atthe beginning of the war

that if anyone thoughtyou should have joined upthey would present youwith a white feather – thesymbol for a coward. That

is what happened toGeorge, and so, on 15January 1915 (my father’s5th birthday!) at the ageof 17 he signed up. He liedabout his age, wasassigned to the MiddlesexRegiment and went towar. We have some of theletters written to his fatherand mother asking howthe rest of the family were. After 1 July the folks backhome did not know howbad things were. Thenewspapers reported thatcasualties had not beenheavy. We know the storywas quite different. Therewas a great deal ofconfusion after the daymy uncle was reportedmissing. My grandparentscontinued to write to himuntil one of his buddy’swrote to them saying thathe noticed letters keptcoming and he should tellthem that George wasmissing. My grandfatherwould not give upbelieving his son wouldcome home and wrote tothe War office, the RedCross and anyone else hecould but sadly it was1923 when his personalpossessions were sent tomy grandfather alongwith his outstanding paythat he had to accept hecould not see Georgeagain.

To this day we do notknow where George isburied. His name is on theThiepval memorial amongthe 73,000 who have noknown grave. His name isrecorded on Pier 12 faceD or Pier 13 Face B.

2012 sees the 80thanniversary of the officialopening of the ThiepvalMemorial and the 20thanniversary of theopening of theHistorical Museum ofthe Great War inPeronne (located 17miles SE of Thiepval onthe Circuit ofRemembrance). Thiepvalmemorial was openedon 31 July 1932 by thePrince of Wales. It wasdesigned by Sir EdwinLutyens and contains thenames of more than73,000 British and SouthAfrican men who have noknown grave and fell on

the Somme between July1916 and March 1918.

This year there is aspecial display at theHistorical de la Guerre atPeronne and 182 menfrom the Battle of theSomme have beenchosen as part of thedisplay....George is one,and before the end of thedisplay I hope to visit theexhibition.

Although George diedat the age of 19 he is notforgotten. His story is toldas part of History lessons atthree schools atleast.........his old school inLondon where the pupilseven walk the route toschool that he might havetaken and his name is on

the Honours Board, aschool in

Blackburn wherehis nephew lives

and atWestfieldSchool, Yeovil,where I taught.

So despitedying at such a

young age,perhaps pupils’

learning about someone

not much older thanthemselves means hislife has not beenentirely wasted.

Dorset County Museum appeals for help to buy Iron Age mirrorDorset County Museum is asking for help to

buy a valuable artefact for its collection. Thebeautiful copper-alloy Chesil Mirror was found in2010 between Abbotsbury and Chickerell and isnow up for sale. This type of mirror, typical of thelate Iron Age, is extremely rare – fewer than 30have ever been discovered in the UK. It isstunningly decorated and was found in a gravedating back to the Roman Conquest. TheMuseum now needs to raise £23,000 urgently tosave the collection for Dorset and prevent its possible sale overseas. Jon Murden, director of Dorset County Museum said, “The acquisition of this mirror is veryimportant because these rare and fascinating objects tell us so much about Iron AgeDorset.”

At 7.00pm on Friday 30 November, Professor Andrew Fitzpatrick of WessexArchaeology is giving a lecture about the significance of the Chesil mirror.

Fresh Approach toPrivate Client Wealth Management

4 Shires Asset Management (www.4-shires.com) is a West Country investmentmanagement firm, based in Sherborne, thatwants to reduce investment costs to enhancereturns and reward long term clients with astake in the business. Jeremy Le Sueur, whofounded the company in 2012, is anexperienced City fund manager who wasnominated UK All Companies Fund Managerof the Year in 2005.

“Investors have historically paid fees andextra fees, often without realising they arepaying them” says Jeremy, “and these reducelong term returns. These high and oftenhidden costs can amount to tens of thousands

of pounds over 10 years for a £200,000portfolio (source: 4 Shires Asset Management). The practice of paying high brokingcommissions, trail commission to IFAs andhigh investment fund charges are often thecause for this reduction in long term returns. We want to change the reality of discretionarywealth management for the benefit of ourclients.”

4 Shires is also inviting clients toparticipate in 10% of the company’s shares forthe first £100m of client assets that comeunder its management. This is to reward longterm clients and is a great opportunity tobenefit from the growth in the company overtime.

One day a year … Frost and FireThis is the time of year when we

get our first frosts. We all want to sitround our fires at night and shutout the cold night air, but the

passage of tradition still carries on.The teachers and children of St

Andrews School in Yetminster are verygood at being creative and verygood at rising to a challenge.

They understand the meaning oftradition and they are particularlygood at what the great historian EricHobsbawm described as “theinvention of tradition”. Hobsbawm,

who has just died at the age of 95,wrote about tradition as being anorganic and changing thing, not

something that stays the same yearafter year.

The children at the school were recentlygiven the challenge of writing a new songabout one of the most popular of communitycelebrations – fireworks. This was written by 6-8year olds:

Blue and purple, pink and yellowViolet, gold and green and red,

Fireworks twirling, twisting, swirlingGlittering beautifully in the air

Rockets flying high Roman Candles painting the sky

Catherine Wheels go round and roundand round

And Sparklers glittering, glittering,glittering,

Sparklers glittering in the night air

Whistle and fizzle, pop, bang and fizz,Burning high up in the air

Rockets blasting bold and loudExploding all around the sky.

What stunning words, and they really sum upthe excitement, noise and colour of bonfirenight. If you log on to the school’s website youwill hear a snatch of the children singing theirsong.

Now when those children grow quite a lotolder they will be able to travel into Devon, toOttery St Mary for 5 November and another

traditional fire ceremony. The annual barrelrolling is not an event for the faint-hearted.Thousands of people throng the streets for oneof the most alarming experiences in Britain’scalendar of traditions.

It may sound innocent enough but just havea look on the internet at some of the videos onYou Tube – just search for ‘Ottery tar barrels’.People run through the streets carrying blazingtar barrels. The massive wooden barrels arelined with pitch which is set alight. The barrelsare then carried on people’s shoulders, passingfrom one carrier to another, until the woodburns through and the barrels disintegrate. Theonly protection for the carriers is Vaseline onthe backs of their necks and sacking boundround their hands. You would think they mightget burned – and they do!

Most of the carriers are men, and theirendeavours are often fuelled by a reasonableintake of alcohol, but there are also women’sbarrels and even a children’s barrel.

If you go there to watch, you need to be asalert and nimble-footed as the carriersthemselves. You will be in a crowd of cup finalproportions and you have little idea of wherethe carriers will run – they have a habit ofsuddenly changing direction – and nor do youhave any idea of how the rest of the crowd isgoing to react to the proximity of a blazinghogshead.

It is a night of glorious anarchy and nerveshattering excitement. The only sanctuary Icould find was in a bank’s cashmachine lobby!

And why onearth do thesepeople do it, whenthey know they aregoing to finish up withburnt hands and necks?Well, they do it becausethey always do it andbecause it’s been done forhundreds of years. It’s tradition!

Festivals of LightIt would be very easy

to think that becausewe all live and go toschool in this beautifulidyll that is the WriggleValley, thatmulticulturism has little todo with us.

However, now morethan ever, it is of greaterimportance that weexplore different faithsand cultures in school,so that when we arethrown into the big wideworld beyond we havea greater globalawareness and respect.

This term the topic inthe upper school is Indiawhich gives the childrenan insight into theseventh-largest countryby area andthe second-mostpopulated countrywith over 1.2 billionpeople. WOW that isan amazing statisticin itself. We havebeen exploringIndia’s geography, both physical andsocial as well aslooking at thedifferences betweenlife in our cities andtheirs. We are alsoinvestigating their art,

food, clothes,wildlife andreligion.

Many of our ‘neighbours’have become friends and theservice Helping hands hasoffered in a time of crisishas developed into anongoing relationships ofmutual help and befriending. This of course is an entirelyinformal arrangement and itlies outside the remit ofHelping Hands, but it’s allpart of being a goodneighbour. Neighbours can

become volunteers too, andwe now have a volunteerdriver who has offered hisservices after receiving helpduring a time of crisis.

Helping Hands wouldnow like to offer its servicesto the Medical Centre inYetminster which serves awider community. Theexcellent outpatient care itoffers cannot of courseextend to the many domesticneeds of its patients and thisis where Helping Hands canstep in with practical carewhen there is no one else toturn to. We have found thattrips to the hospital or tocollect a prescription caninvolve a costly Taxi fare.Helping Hands drivers areon hand if you ring thededicated telephonenumber: 01935 8722378.They will charge a standard‘Charity rate’ of 45p a mile.

If you would like to hearmore about the work ofHelping Hands then docome to the next quarterlymeeting in the Trim roomsat St. Andrew’s Hall at7.00 pm on Monday 5November, or ring theHelping Hands telephonenumber 01935 872378.Your help and friendshipwill be greatly appreciated.Regular training is providedby qualified healthprofessionals. A Criminal

Recordsbureaucheck isrequiredfor allvolunteers and you will beinvited to meet with ourteam to discuss youravailability and skills youwould like to offer.

Get the Message

He was a tinderbox. He made aliving with his hands and got introuble with his mouth. He had

a lot in common with other hard men.His bumper sticker would have read, "Idon't get mad; I get even."

His family called him Simon, but hismaster called him "Rocky.” You knowhim as Peter.

Anyway, this night, Peter is introuble.

The wind roars. The lightningflashes. The sodden air vibrates withthunder. Rain pings, then pops, thenslaps against the boat until huge wavespick them up and slam them downagain with bone-jarring force.

These drenched men don't look likea team of friends who are only a decadeaway from changing the world. No.They look more like a handful ofcowering sailors who are wondering ifthe next wave will be the end of them.

Peter knows what the fury of windand wave can do. That is why, when hesees Jesus coming toward the boat, heis the first to say, "Lord, if it's you... tellme to come to you…”

Get the message here. It's notevery day that you walk through waterwhose waves that are taller than youare. But when faced with thealternative of drowning, Peter knowswhich one he wants. And the first fewsteps go well. But a few strides out intohis troubled waters, he forgets to keeplooking to the one who got him there inthe first place. So down he plunges.

Here we see the difference betweenanother man and Peter - the differencebetween a man who hides his problemand one who admits it.

Another man would be moreconcerned about his image than his

News from the Methodist ChurchPilgrimage to the Holy LandMay 7-16 2013

A group of 22 people from the Melburyand Wimborne benefices will be making apilgrimage to the Holy Land next May, ledby Rev Graham Perryman of the Melburybenefice.

The pilgrimage is organised by McCabePilgrimages who are generally recognisedto be the leaders in this field. Those of uswho have travelled with them beforeregard their hotels, guides, transportationand organisation to be excellent. We shallspend 4 nights in Galilee at an hotel on theshores of the lake and will visit places weassociate with Jesus’ early life and hisministry. Then we shall move to Jerusalemvia the Jordan valley and Jericho and spend5 nights there staying in an hotel which isvery close to the old city. While inJerusalem we shall have a comprehensivetour of the city, taking in all the significantsites mentioned in the gospels and alsovisit other important places such asBethlehem. We shall also have the optionof taking a trip to the fortress of Masadaand to Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrollswere discovered. We finish by travelling toJoppa on the Mediterranean coast beforeflying home.

This is a very comprehensive and fullyinclusive programme which includes alltransportation, meals, guides andentrance fees to all the places we shall visit. The cost is £1595 per person sharing atwin-bedded room.

There are still a number of placesavailable. So if you would like a copy of thebrochure or to have a chat about theprogramme etc. please contact DavidWright on 01935 891449 or [email protected]

neck.He would

prefer togo under

and strugglethan ask for

help. He would rather godown - his way - than get out -

God's way. But sensible Peterreaches out to Jesus and is rescued. The message is clear.

As long as Jesus is one of manyoptions, he is no option. If you can carryyour burdens alone, you don't need aburden-bearer. If your situation brings

you no grief, you will need no comfort. If you can take him or leave him, youmight as well leave him - he won't betaken half-heartedly.

But when you do mourn, when you doget to the point of sorrow for yourwrongs, when you manage to admit thatyou have no other option but to cast allyour cares on him, and when there is noother help that you can call, then cast allyourself on him. This story’s message is,

“He’s waiting in the middle of the storm”.

Amazing GraceWhat is distinctive

about the Christian faithcompared with all otherreligions and systems ofthought in the world? What is the essence ofChristianity? Some wouldsay it is the belief in grace,in the unmerited mercyand kindness of God theCreator. It is grace thatprompts the response ofreligious devotion. Welove Him who first lovedus.

But there is far moreto the concept of gracethan this. It is when webegin to understand howprecious every individualis to God that we learnhow to love our neighbour. There has been a dark side

to every world religion, notleast Christianity. Fanaticalfaith has led to bigotry andintolerance, to persecutionand bloodshed. But oncethe reality of grace hasbeen grasped, there can beno place for any judgmentalor exclusive attitudes.

And there is a furtherconsequence. We will beconcerned during the earlypart of November withthoughts of remembrance, with young and largelyunfulfilled lives cut short bydeath in armed conflict. The hosts of men andwomen killed or maimed inwar since 1914 hardly bearthinking about. Yet wemust remember them. Aretheir lives over, except inthe memories of those towhom they were dear?

If we believe in agracious God who caresprofoundly about everyone of His human children,we can only conclude thatbroken lives, and lives cutshort by an untimelydeath, will eventually bemade whole and enabledto reach their fullpotential.

Towards the end ofNovember we will beentering the season ofAdvent, which is notmerely a run intoChristmas but a time forself-examination andpenitence. How far arewe ourselves achievingour full potential andbecoming under God’sgrace all that we aremeant to be?

September 2012

“Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet” Roger Miller

RainfallIt was another good month for

hardy walkers. As so often this year, rainwas the dominantfactor in September’sweather. The wettestday (the 23rd) saw 43mm (nearly 2 inches),giving two thirds of theusual total for thewhole month. Therewere only 16 rain-freedays - a sharp contrastto our driest year, whenSeptember 2006 had24.

Total rainfall for the first eight monthsof 2012 is now 796 mm (31”). This beatsthe previous record of 766 mm (30”) set13 years ago in 1999.

TemperaturesAs optimists would put it, at least it

was fairly warm rain. The average temperature in

September was 13.8C (57F) only a littlebelow the usual 14.4C (58F). Thehottest day (the 7th) saw 27C (81F),well above the usual maximum of 25F(78F).

We have had frosts duringSeptember only twice since 1995 butwe came fairly close on the 18th,when the temperature plunged to1.7C (35F).

Sunshine September had only 76 hours of

sunshine, 37% less than theusual amount. 2012’syear-to-date total of only883 hours consolidates itsrecord as the dullest yearwe have recorded. (Theprevious record was 937hours in 2004).

There were four dayswithout measurablesunshine duringSeptember, but only twowhen the sun shone

almost continuously. Last year the sunshone for 37% of the daylight hours. Thisyear it managed to do so for only 28%of the time.

Pressure and wind speedsThe average barometric pressure in

September was a little higher thanusual, at 1020mb instead of 1019.Winds were generally moist andsoutherly. The maximum wind speedwas only 25 mph, much less than the 33mph gusts we usually experienceduring this month.

…gone gardening

Oh I hear you say, this is November, there is not a lot to do in the garden?November can be a very busy month. There is a lot to do. The garden is dampunder foot but it still might havewonderful autumn colour. There arecolder days and nights to look forwardto, heavy rain and gales and maybeas the month goes by frosty days andeven snow. After thefirst hard frost theleaves will fall almostovernight and willneed clearing up offthe lawn area, bedsand borders.

The lawn mowerwhich is probablyredundant by thistime can ideally besent off forservicing andsharpening up.

Most of the herbaceous can betrimmed up and tidied now. It’s aquestion of snipping off the old deadfoliage, this will encourage freshgrowth in the spring.

November is a great time to plantbareroot hedging, trees and roses.Make sure you put some goodcompost in the hole to get themstarted off well. I am always a bitcautious about planting herbaceousat this time of year especially as weare on clay. If the weather is very wetit might rot off in the ground. Far betterto leave it until the springtime.

It is also a good time to plant outshrubs. Hardwood cuttings of shrubsand soft fruit like blackcurrants and

gooseberries canbe taken now.

Tulips shouldbe planted bythe end of themonth. In thevegetablegarden you could plant some broadbeans but beware mice may take theseed. You can also sow garlic bulbs, I

love growinggarlic, we usesuch a lot of itin the kitchen. The bulbs areperhaps bettersown in potsandoverwintered ina coldframe orthe greenhouse.

Having tidiedup all the debris

from the garden youmight decide to have a bonfire, makesure you check that there are nocreatures hibernating underneathyour pile of debris before you get thefire going. Nothing is more satisfyingthan having a fire in your own gardenbut watch which way the wind isblowing, there is nothing worse thansmoking your neighbours out, youmight not be very popular.

Finally feet up with a hot cup of teaand biscuits or even better soup madefrom your own vegetables.Hmmm..Happy Gardening!

The Yetminster History SocietyA good face for radio

FromfarmingoriginsJohnBurgess,speakerat theOctobermeeting,

moved intothe BBC. He recorded features on farming, the environment and country life for Radio4, and latterly for Radio Devon, for 30years.

Describing himself as “a good face forradio,” John’s easy style and obviousinterest in people has enabled him tocollect and record a valuable store of oralhistory.

His title “Working for the Wireless”reflects the days when radio was known as

“the wireless” – nothing to do withbroadband or hot-spots! He recalledchildhood memories of the family by thefire of a winter evening, hushed, waitingfor the wireless to warm up - to listen tothe Archers.

In the early sixties the BBC was stillvery much under the influence of founderJohn (later Lord) Reith, given tobroadcasting rather than communicating. This balance was radically reversed byFrank Gillard, originally a warcorrespondent and rising to Director ofRadio in 1964. Frank’s view was to makeradio more personal. He also broughtabout the introduction of local radio, starting with Radio Leicester in 1967.

Memories of old “wireless”programmes came flooding back withJohn’s medley of recordings from, amongothers, Listen with Mother, Mrs Dale’sDairy, and the Glums from Take It FromHere.

For Radio Devon John had producedfeatures on the now possibly lost rural lifeof the West Country. One fine playbackrecorded a spontaneous dialogue from anold farmer on the joys of cider, from afeature originally planned to be on barnowls! And there was the tale of two ladiesfrom the Quantocks, recorded forWoman’s Hour, who had made a veryprofitable business just after the war frombottling local whortleberries. Their superbmarketing involved just one trip to London.By ‘innocently’ setting off the buyers fromFortnum & Mason, Army & Navy andHarrods against each other they securedso much repeat business they never hadto travel to London again.

The meeting rounded off with a youngAlan Titchmarch, then working for the BBCat Plymouth, singing an alternative versionof All Things Bright and Beautiful: “Thegreenfly on the roses, the maggot in thepeas…..” You get the idea. Thank you, John.

John has also produced for the societyan oral history of Yetminster. Entitled

“Village Voices” it contains reminiscencesof the last 80+ years of life in and aroundYetminster. Copies of the CDs can beobtained at the society meetings orthrough David Fogden on 872090.

The next meeting is at YetminsterChurch Hall, 14 November. Rob Curtis willspeak on Smuggling Tales & Trails.

Leigh Discussion ClubOur Lady Chairman Val

Buckland welcomed twonew members to ourOctober meeting and it waspleasing to report a reallyexcellent turnout of thirtymembers for the first of theWinter meetings.

Our guest speaker forthe evening was DoctorJohn Tuke “ To be a CountryDoctor “ although nowretired it was really nice forhim to recognise many ofhis former patients amongstour members. John's talkwas about his life and howhe had decided to get intothe medical profession – Hisfather was an ex SeaCaptain who became aDoctor but John did not atfirst follow that course, instead he took off to

Australia and worked on asheep farm and learning toride horses which wereessential in covering thevast expanse of territory. He then went to college andwas successful in variousexams – It was then, adecision was made that hewanted to become a Doctor

– some while later hesurprised his father with aphone call announcing thisis Dr Tuke speaking ! Fromhere he went to St ThomasHospital in London wherehe learnt his trade byassisting some of the topconsultants at the time. One particular task whichnever ceased to bring himimmense joy throughout hiscareer was deliveringbabies – who knows, it mayhave all started with those

lambs in Australia ! LeavingLondon he moved to ageneral practice inSherborne where he hadmet and cared for many ofhis listeners on this evening

– he also spoke of the timein his life when he becameparalysed and the efforts ofhis wife and family, plus themention of a man withhealing hands – now he isfully recovered and fit andwell. An excellent speakerwith stories of life thateveryone could relate to.Our Lady Chairman thankedDr Tuke for a mostentertaining talk and ourappreciation was shown inthe usual manner.

Our next meeting 6November – Speaker: SueHennasey “Womens’ role inthe RNLI”

Christopher Jacobs

Leigh WII.Our September meeting

was turned into a fundraising event for Macmillan

Cancer Support and wascombined with the CommitteeSupper.

Instead of our usual lightrefreshments, we were treated to adelicious supper prepared by theCommittee. This, together with aglass of wine, set the mood for the restof the evening. After much chattingand catching up on news our greymatter was put to the test with an 'nottoo easy' quiz. We also had a lot of fun

trying to match up photographs of theCommittee Members as children to thepresent day.

The evening turned out to be ahuge success and and a total sum of£115 was raised for the MacmillanCancer Support Charity.

On 27 November our speaker willbe Mrs. Helen McNabb and she will betalking to us about "Floristry forChristmas". We are always verypleased to see a new face, so do comeand join us - you will be made mostwelcome.

76th Leigh Flower ShowOur Flower Show was held on Saturday 11

August, and this proved to be a lovely sunny day– so fortunate after the 'unusual' growingseason everyone had experienced - not quitefire, flood and tempest, though at times itseemed to come very close! But despite all theproblems, our exhibitors, as ever, did not fail us,and we had just under 500 entries over all theclasses.

We were delighted to welcome the LordLieutenant of Dorset, Mrs. Pitt-Rivers, to openthe Show and present the Cups. In her speech, she commented on the difficult growing seasonand how impressed she was that everyone hadrisen above it to provide such a colourful anddiverse Flower Show. The Vote Of Thanks wasgiven by Rev. Anthony Durkin, who remindedus that in the past the Lord Lieutenant wouldhave come to inspect Leigh's local militia, so itwas a pleasure to have welcomed her for amore light-hearted inspection!

Chloe Jepson presented the bouquet andbuttonholes charmingly, and Chairman, BrianRead, made a special point of thanking Lornaand Norman Garrett for replacing the GwenGosney Cookery Cup which had seen too manypolishings over the years. He also mentionedthat the Photography Judge had commentedon the excellent standard of entries.

As ever, the Committee are very grateful toour Judges, Stewards, W.I. Tea Ladies andeveryone who helped to put the Show together, for without them it could not take place. Finally, the Committee would like to thank all theexhibitors who support Leigh Flower Show soloyally year after year, as well as beingdelighted to welcome those newcomers whoexhibited for the first time in 2012, and lookforward to welcoming everyone – exhibitorsand visitors alike – again at the 77th LeighFlower Show on Saturday, 10 August, 2013.

The day of ourOctober talk on ‘Pondsand Water Features’turned out to be one ofthose hideous days oftorrential rain -the irony ofthe title wasnot lost on anyof us. Whocould possiblyentertain theidea of turningout on a nightlike this to heara talk aboutwater? And at7pm when ourspeaker, JennyShort, was due to arrive,we received a call fromher saying she wasstranded by floods thewrong side ofBroadwindsor.

Had I been her, Iwould have turned round, gone home and had twostiff G&Ts. But Jenny ismade of sterner stuff, and so are our members.Within the hour everyonewas seated and Jennywas up and running withher presentation, seemingly unphased byher unpleasant journey. She cheerfully set to todemonstrate the pure joyof having water as afeature in the gardenand her talk was bothfascinating and inspiring.Ponds came first: herslides showed us howthey bring light andreflection. Sheeloquently explained how

to build them, how toattract wildlife and howto keep the water clearand what to grow in andaround the edges. She

talked in amost engaging wayabout all the importantthings one needs toknow, and she was full ofsound, practical advice. And as for WaterFeatures, we now knowthat building them is adoddle and no matterhow quirky we want tobe, it doesn’t matter, because the principlesare simple and they arealways the same: justtake a large black bucketwith holes in it, add apipe, a pump and someelectricity and maybesome of her lovelydecorative stones andthere you have it. Ofcourse she had somegood slides, as well assome helpful notes onmaintenance anddiagrams to take away tohelp us embark on whatwill clearly be our ‘nextproject’ in the garden.

She was great. Actually,Jenny is a gardendesigner (I’m guessing, but I think she is

probably rather agood one) and sheis running a seriesof courses at theBoyle Gallery overthe comingmonths on a widerange of topics todo with makingthe most of yourgarden. Shouldyou wish to findout more, pleasecontact Jenny

Short on 01297 442602.

Our speaker at ourOctober meeting was SarahBailey. Sarah is anecclesiastical textiles andembroidery expert. She isfrom a family of fine artdesigners and weavers andtrained at Glasgow ArtSchool where she wasgreatly inspired during hertime there. She broughtwith her some magnificent

Chasubles, Copes andMitres that she had made.Fashion in church garmentschange but the shapes donot and go back as far asthe 11th century. Coloursare important and have asymbolic meaning. Purplemeaning Royalty andMajesty and is alsosymbolic of Lent with redfor Christmas. As anecclesiastical embroidererSarah is commissioned todo restoration work of allsorts including elaborategold work. She usestraditional materials of goldthread, beautiful silks andfabrics with skills frommedieval times, althoughshe did admit to using amachine on occasion. Wemarvelled at the intricateand minute detail of herwork. How satisfying toknow that your talent willbe seen and admired forgenerations to come. We

The AGM of theClub took place at Chetnole VillageHall on Monday 1st October andwas attended by some 47members eager to hear the annualreports and what awaits them inthe coming year.

After Sandy Burton launched theclub into her second year asCaptain, accompanied by the usualshuffling of her minions on theCommittee, Lieutenant Blair Sibununwrapped the programme for thecoming year. It promises anexciting series of events such asNewd Gardening techniques (I amassured there is no misspelling inthe title), Preparing Produce for aShow, Gardens of Australasia,Buddleia and much more.

The changes in the Committeeteam are both strategic and tactical.Linda Carroll and Lyn Darley haveboth retired (uninjured). They havebeen replaced by Steve Porter andStephanie Fripp, drafted from thesquad bench to add steel andexperience to the midfield. Thetactical skills of Karen Moore, much

respected for her ability to readthe game, have been switched tothe influential position ofSecretary.

Immediately after the formalprocedures of the evening anauction of the plants brought bymembers was conducted by Lt.Sibun with his usual forceful goodhumour; this hilarious interluderaised over £60 for club funds.

Subsequently, those presentdescended upon the wine and

foodprovidedandconversedanimatedly aboutthe club’sprospectsfor theclub inthecomingyear. Theopinionwas very positive that anexciting period for our gardeningclub is imminent.

The first event of the newprogramme will be held on 5November at Chetnole Village Hallat 7.30. The speaker will be LynnBurningham from the Dorset officeof the RSPB. The subject is “Birdsin your Garden” and the evening’sassociated competition will be aphotograph of a bird in your garden.Visitors and guests welcome.

Wriggle Valley Mothers’ UnionAt our October meeting we invited

Bishop Richard Llewellin to come and speakto us on “Bethlehem – a city besieged”. Itwas an Open meeting and it was good to seeso many people there. Bishop Llewellin wasbrought up in India during the SecondWorld War and after leaving school qualifiedas a solicitor and practised for a short timebefore being ordained in 1964. One of hiscuracies was at Johannesburg Cathedralduring the height of apartheid and he waseventually kicked out of South Africa. Aftera couple of parish jobs he became Bishop ofSt German’s in the Truro Diocese, thenBishop of Dover and finally Bishop ofLambeth as the Archbishop of Canterbury’sHead of Staff. He retired in 2003 and visitedthe Holy Land on a number of occasionssince 1963 and after retirement hevolunteered to join The EcumenicalAccompaniment Programme in Palestineand Israel. He had recently spent threemonths living in Bethlehem and as he saidhe was telling us “his side of the story” andhow powerful that story was. He was outthere with three other volunteers and theylived alongside the Arab Christians, visitingthe checkpoints each day to make surethere was fair play for those trying to getinto Jerusalem to work. The EAPPI alsomonitor and report violations of humanrights and offer protection through non-violent presence. They support Israeli andPalestinian peace activists and undertakeadvocacy work including public speaking inUK and Ireland on their return home. TheEAPPI is an initiative of the World Council ofChurches which co-ordinates theprogramme internationally and it was setup as a response to a call by the Heads ofChurches in Jerusalem for a protectivepresence.

All thosewho heardBishopLlewellin wereleft in no doubtof thechallenges forthat area ofthe MiddleEast and weall left thatmeetingmoreinformed ofthe situation in Bethelehem.

Our next meeting is at MargaretShipman’s on Tuesday 6 November at2.30pm. For more information on theMothers Union, please contact eitherMargaret Shipman, 772440 orAnne Reason, 873726.
