Birthdays and Anniversaries for August 2014 Birthdays Anniversaries

Copyright 2014 A&K Railroad Materials, Inc.

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we’re kids? If you’re less than 10 years old, you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions.

“How old are you?” “I’m four and a half!” You’re never thirty-six and a half. You’re four and a half, going on five!

That’s the key.

You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead.

“How old are you?” “I’m gonna be 16!” You could be 13, but hey, you’re gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life…you become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony…YOU BECOME 21 YESSSS !!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk…he TURNED; we had to throw him out. There’s no fun now, you’re just a sour-dumpling. What’s wrong? What’s changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you’re PUSHING 40.

Whoa! Put on the brakes, it’s all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50…and your dreams are gone.

But wait!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn’t think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.

You’ve built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it’s a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday! You get into your 80s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime.

And it doesn’t end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; “I was JUST 92.”

Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. “I’m 100 and a half!”

May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay them.

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop”. And the devil’s name is Alzheimer’s.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge. 8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help. 9. Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

Scholarship Award Congratulations to Cierra Hildebrand, this year’s A&K Scholarship Award Recipient. She is the daughter of Marshane Hildebrand, Salt Lake City Yard, and her husband Steve. College has been a constant dream she has always wanted to pursue. Cierra left her traditional boundary high school to attend an early college high school during her junior and senior years of high school. She graduated this year with 28 college credits, as well as her high school diploma from Itineris Early College.

We would like to share the following which she sent in as part of her scholarship application:

Cierra is an exceptional individual who will be successful in her education and career path. We wish her well in her endeavors and believe that with her positive attitude, strong work ethic and determination she will “lessen the suffering of others”.

Welcome – Ashli Vass, Salt Lake Real Estate Department I joined A&K in April, working at the Corporate Headquarters as the Administrative Assistant to the Real Estate Department. I bring over five years of experience as an assistant, as well as tenacity and a problem-solving mindset.

When I’m not working, I love to ride horses, read, and spend time with my boyfriend and my family. I am an admitted bookworm, and I love to learn. One of my favorite things to which to listen is the “Stuff You Missed in History Class” podcast from HowStuffWorks.com. I can’t wait to grow my knowledge here at A&K!

KC BBQ Employees in Kansas City are taking advantage of their new patio area. Recently the Fasteners division (Dan Britten, Jenni Davis, Shawna Hendrix, Roger Bowman, Bill Donnelly, Gabriel Maya-Villa, Luis Ramirez, James Schexnayder, Vincente Segura) hosted a BBQ for everyone. Ballpark Brats was the theme with grilled jalapenos, bell peppers, onions and sauerkraut. They also had grilled chicken breast, baked beans, cheesy corn, marinated cucumber and onions and finished off with fresh fruit for dessert.

Another BBQ was hosted by the KC sales department (Beth Wyatt, Jim Huenefeldt, Katie Copeland, Sue Thao) with Bill Donnelly from Fasteners taking care of the grilling. The menu was hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and fresh fruit. Several sales reps from our different locations, the president, and general counsel were all in town for meetings and were able to participate and enjoy the great food and nice weather.

SLC BBQ Delicious Summer BBQ’s continue at Corporate Headquarters. One was hosted by the Yard and Maintenance employees (Mitch Murray, Robert Neibaur, Bob Overbey, Kim Overbey, Marshane Hildebrand, Lynn Kinsey). The theme was taco/nacho salads with root beer floats for dessert.

Another was hosted by IT, Railroads, and Legal (Abraham Zwygart, Aaron Parsons, Bruce Skousen, Doug Davis). They planned beef brisket, barbequed chicken and pork with salads and brownies.

We invited the local police and firemen to join us this year to give thanks for their service in our community and have them be familiar with the employees and our building in case of an emergency. At our last BBQ we had 4 firemen and 12 policemen join us; what an honor. We hope they will be able to attend more of our BBQs!

>Feeling Stressed Out? Give these free and low–cost techniques a try!

Everyone feels stressed from time to time, and it’s rarely a pleasant experience. But before you grab that pint of ice cream, pop a pill or hit the mall, take a few deep breaths and try one of the options below.

1. Use the 4-7-8 breathing technique (or “paced breathing”). Here’s how it works: Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4. Hold the breath for a count of 7. Breathe out strongly through your mouth (like you’re blowing up a balloon) for a count of 8. Repeat that cycle 3 to 4 times. That’s it. It only takes a few minutes and will bring your stress level down, and your sense of wellbeing up, almost instantly.

2. Enjoy a small piece of dark chocolate.

3. Meditate, even if it’s as simple as closing your eyes and focus on relaxing one muscle group at a time.

4. Take a short break from technology, especially your smartphone. Take a walk and feel the sun on your face.

5. Write out your feelings. Burn them later if it’ll help you let go.

HEALTHY QUICK TIP: Drink more water, it’s HOT out there!

FAST FOOD MENU OPTIONS: Try a Subway veggie sandwich with your choice of favorites.

We are looking forward to receiving your feedback and ideas for upcoming issues. Please submit to Katrina Gougis.

Be happy and healthy, - A&K Wellness Committee

“For me, I am driven by two main philosophies: know more today about the world than I knew yesterday and lessen the suffering of others. You’d be surprised how far that gets you.” — Neil deGrasse Tyson

Neil deGrasse Tyson’s quote is one I try to live by. I firmly believe that in order to lessen the suffering of others, knowledge and education are the most useful tools in society. In order to be successful at helping individuals, I choose to further my education in the field of Psychology. This decision is not only challeng-ing but my way of giving back to humanity, as well as to those who have faith in my ability to succeed. The biggest impact on my career choice is very personal in nature. A few years ago before I started with Itineris Early College, my grandmother had a Grand-Mal seizure in front of me. My family ended up taking her to the emergency room, where after many test and exams, we found she had white matter accumulation on her brain. This accumulation can affect several regions of the brain, and alter her perception as well as her ability to think clearly and respond naturally to everyday situations. As I watch this illness tear her down mentally and physically, I knew that helping people that have experienced trauma in all forms is where I could make the biggest impact.

I have taken two psychology courses that piqued my interest and helped me understand my grandmother’s mental issues. I also have friends and other family members that suffer from depression, schizophrenia, night terrors and severe head traumas. The field of Psychology has such a wide variety of disciplines and studies to help individuals in need.

My goal is to finish college with my Masters or Ph.D. in Psychology, with a minor in Philosophy. My short term goal is to obtain my Associates of Science in Psychology at Salt Lake Community College. After I earn my AS, I hope to further my education with the University of Utah, and plan to obtain an internship counseling young adults or preteens with Utah Valley Mental Health.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH “Strength doesn’t come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.”

New International Sales Office We are proud to announce that we have moved the International Sales office to a new location. After more than 35 years in the same building, we took advantage that our lease was expiring, and moved to a larger and more convenient location. The new office is in Spring, Texas, only about two miles north, in a very nice area with great access to the city of Houston.

Packing and moving was no easy task in itself, but we dreaded relocating the communications system and any resulting downtime. Bruce Skousen was an immense help. Bruce’s direction ensured everything went as smoothly as possible.

We are now enjoying our new office and conducting business as usual. If you are in the neighborhood, please stop by.
