Vignette of a powerful leader in

education illustrating the obstaclesand barriers he/she had toovercome to be successful.

Scott overcame a childhood of adversity to graduate from college and has made a lifes work inhelping those behind him. Scott grew up the youngest of 17 children including four stepsiblings - in what he calls a drug-plagued neighborhood of Capital Heights, Maryland. His motherwas disabled by polio, and his father eventually went blind when he was twelve. From sixth toninth grade, Scotts GPA was lower than a D. He was no stranger to out-of-school suspension.

Teenagers in his neighborhood either sold drugs or stole cars, and he was no different.Tenth grade marked his turning point. He met the wrestling coach at the high school who was a

major in the Army reserves, a disciplinarian, and Scott needed structure. Chase now recalls Scottas a scholar-athlete and a soft-spoken team captain so powerful as a wrestler that he was knownas Kill Dozer. The next year he met a math teacher who helped him discover his passion formath. Scott said this teacher kept it entertaining and inspired him.In recent years Scott has focused on ESL students. He is convinced that math can offer them apath to college and a career, as it did for him.
